Choose a capture method

Use Firefox when you want the visible page area. Use a rectangular selection when you want to exclude browser controls or nearby content. These steps capture what is already displayed; they do not provide access to content your account cannot view.

Capture the visible page in Firefox
- Open the article and scroll until the passage you want is visible.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save visible to capture the current page viewport, rather than the full page.
- Choose the save or copy option shown after capture.
Mozilla describes this option as capturing the currently visible area of the web page. Its support instructions were updated June 15, 2026: Firefox Screenshots.

- Arrange the browser so the article passage is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular snip and drag around the passage.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification to edit or save the image.
The selected image is copied to the clipboard. Windows also offers window and full-screen captures; choose the rectangle when you want to leave out unrelated screen content. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Capture a selected area on Mac
- Position the passage on screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4, drag the crosshair around the area, and release.
- Use the thumbnail to edit, or wait for the screenshot to save to the desktop.
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls instead. Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not let users capture their windows. Its Mac support page was published March 27, 2026: Take a screenshot on your Mac.
Take a screenshot on iPhone
- Face ID model: Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Touch ID model: Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
Use the screenshot preview to edit, save, or share. Apple documents the steps at Take a screenshot on your iPhone.

Frame the image carefully
Before capturing, put the relevant text in view and select only the area you need. A tight crop avoids including unrelated personal information, browser tabs, or account details. Firefox’s visible-page mode captures the viewport; the Windows and Mac methods above let you define a rectangle yourself.
Keep capture separate from permission to share
A technical screenshot is not, by itself, permission to republish subscription content. Check the publisher’s terms and applicable rights before distributing the image. The rules can depend on the publisher and jurisdiction; the sources cited here do not establish one universal legal answer.

For example, W3C says no permission is required to use a screenshot of its site so long as the use does not imply W3C sponsorship or endorsement. That statement concerns W3C screenshots only; it is not a rule for other publishers’ subscription articles. See W3C copyright and document use.
If an app or service blocks ordinary capture, use publisher-provided save, print, or reading options where available rather than attempting to defeat the restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture the whole article instead of just what is visible?
Firefox offers full-page capture as well as its Save visible option. Choose Save visible when you specifically need the viewport.
What if the screenshot shortcut does not work?
Try the platform’s screenshot controls instead of the shortcut: Firefox’s page context menu, macOS Shift-Command-5, or Windows Snipping Tool. Some apps may restrict capture; use publisher-provided options rather than bypassing a restriction.
