For a useful SEO comparison, record the country, results language, city or postcode if relevant, device, and capture time: a screenshot is a dated observation, not a universal ranking.
What a country-specific SERP screenshot can—and cannot—show
Google Search lets desktop users choose results for another country through Search settings. The selection provides a country-level view; it does not, by itself, reproduce every condition affecting an individual searcher. Google notes that result presentation can vary with device, country, query language, and other factors, and that location can make results locally relevant. Use the capture to document what appeared under stated conditions. Avoid treating it as the one definitive ranking for everyone in that country. For a local-intent query, specify a city or postcode as well as the country; a country setting alone is not a precise city-level simulation.
Capture a SERP manually in Google Search
- Define the comparison. Choose the exact query and decide whether you need a country-level view or a particular city/postcode. Keep the query and result type consistent across captures.
- Set the country. In desktop Google Search, open Search settings, scroll to Region Settings, choose the target region, and save. Google’s instructions are at See results for a different country.
- Check language separately. Google distinguishes display language from results language and region. The query’s language and any results-language filter can also affect what appears. Record the selections rather than assuming that changing the interface language changes the result language. See Google Search Settings.
- Run the query and capture the page. Keep the query visible in the screenshot and include enough of the results page to show the layout and relevant features. Record whether you used desktop or mobile and note the date and time.
- Repeat under matching conditions. For each target country, retain the same query, result type, language choices, device class, and capture approach. For local queries, record the city or postcode and use a workflow that actually supports that location.
- Label and compare the images. Use filenames or a log that identify the query, region/location, language, device, and timestamp. Compare like with like, and describe differences as observations from those captures.
The recording checklist is a practical way to make comparisons interpretable; it is not a Google-prescribed standard. Search results change over time and depend on context.

Capture log to keep with each screenshot

Choose a workflow for one-off checks, recurring tracking, or site reporting
Manual Google settings: occasional visual checks
Use the manual method when you need a small number of snapshots and can set the country and language choices yourself. It gives you a visual record of the page you observed, but repeating the capture requires you to control and log the conditions each time.

For scheduled or repeatable observations across keywords and locations, BrightLocal documents country selection and a search location such as a postcode or town in its Local Rank Tracker report setup. Its help article says SERP screenshots are available for the ranking report and retained for 45 days; that retention period is the vendor’s stated capability, and the article does not state a publication year. Google Search Console: country-segmented performance, not a SERP image
Search Console’s Performance report can group a site’s search data by country and report clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. It is useful for evaluating aggregate site performance, but it does not preserve a screenshot of the exact results page seen by one person at one moment. Compare captures without overclaiming
- Align the query, country or local target, results language, device, and capture time as closely as possible.
- Keep display language distinct from results language in your notes.
- When comparing a tracker screenshot with a manual search, expect that differences may remain because results vary by context and over time.
- Report what the saved screenshots show, with their conditions; do not generalize one capture into a definitive ranking for all searchers in a country.

Does changing Google’s region setting simulate a searcher in a specific city?
No. The documented setting selects a country/region; it does not establish an exact city-level simulation. For local-intent comparisons, specify and use a city or postcode through a workflow that supports it.

Can Google Search Console show me a screenshot of a country’s SERP?
No. Its Performance report provides country-segmented site metrics, not a saved image of a particular search-results page.
