On a Mac, use Shift-Command-4 and drag over the visible search results to capture the part of the Safari page you need. For a whole screen, press Shift-Command-3; for controls to choose a screen, window, or portion, press Shift-Command-5. Record the query and search context alongside the image so another person can interpret what the screenshot shows.
Capture the visible search results on a Mac
- Open the search-results page in Safari and wait for it to finish rendering.
- To capture only the relevant results, press Shift-Command-4. Drag the crosshair around the area you want, then release.
- Alternatively, press Shift-Command-5 to open the macOS Screenshot controls. Choose a screen, window, or selected portion, then capture it. The controls also include options such as setting a timer and choosing where screenshots are saved.
- Use a descriptive filename with the query or audit identifier and capture date. For example:
seo-audit-query-2026-10-03.png. - Add the screenshot to your audit notes with the search context described below.
Press Shift-Command-3 if you need the entire display rather than a selected area. macOS screenshots normally save to the desktop and show a thumbnail you can use for editing. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s support instructions list SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF) capture formats. What to record with each SERP screenshot
A screenshot records one visible result page in one context; it is not a universal measure of ranking or visibility. Search results can vary by location, device, language, personalization, and date. Record the details that are known so later comparisons are meaningful.

- Query: preserve the literal search phrase.
- Capture time: include the date and use a consistent time convention for recurring checks.
- Search context: note the search engine, country or location, language, device class, and whether the session may be personalized.
- Scope: state whether the screenshot shows the viewport, a window, or multiple scrolled captures.
- Audit observation: describe a visible change separately from the image; a screenshot alone does not prove a ranking change.
Keep recurring captures together and compare screenshots made under similar conditions. This is practical audit documentation, not a formal search-engine measurement standard.

When the audit needs more than the visible viewport
The Mac shortcuts capture the display, a window, or a selected area. They are suitable for evidence about visible layout, such as result order, ads, snippets, other result-page modules, or what appeared above the fold. They do not, by themselves, turn a long page into one full-page Mac screenshot.
For results farther down the page, scroll and capture additional sections with enough overlap to make their sequence clear. Note that the audit uses multiple segments. Keep titles and relevant snippets legible, and avoid cropping away query or context when those details matter to interpretation.

Apple documents a separate full-page workflow for Safari on iPhone: take a screenshot, select Full Page, then save the capture as an image or PDF. This is an option for preserving a long page on iPhone, not a Mac full-page screenshot procedure. See Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions.

On Mac, Safari’s File > Save As menu offers Web Archive and Page Source. Some webpages may prevent items from being saved. These options preserve content differently from a screenshot and should not be used as substitutes when the audit needs a record of how the results looked at capture time. Web Inspector is for page inspection, not this capture workflow
Safari’s Web Inspector helps inspect webpage structure and debug HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. On Mac, Apple’s documented ways to open it include choosing Develop > Show Web Inspector (Option-Command-I) or right-clicking and choosing Inspect Element.
