To take a screenshot in Greenshot, press Print and drag over the area you want. Use Alt+Print for the active window, Ctrl+Print for the entire screen, or right-click Greenshot’s notification-area icon to choose a capture mode. After capture, send the image to the editor for annotation or export it directly to a file, clipboard, printer or email.
This guide follows the default shortcuts documented in Greenshot’s Version 1.2.10 help. Greenshot’s hotkeys can be changed in settings, and the project’s releases page shows later 1.3.x activity, so your installed build may use different assignments.
Before you capture: install and check Greenshot
- Install Greenshot for Windows and launch it.
- Look for the green Greenshot icon in the Windows notification area (the tray near the clock). Greenshot runs as a background process.
- If you do not see the icon, expand the hidden-icons area or start Greenshot again. Right-clicking the icon opens its commands and settings.
The documented defaults below assume Greenshot is running and that the Print key is available. On compact keyboards, that key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or require an Fn modifier.
Greenshot shortcuts at a glance
| Shortcut | Capture | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Selected region | Greenshot changes the pointer so you can draw a rectangle. | |
| Alt+Print | Active window | Captures the window currently in focus. |
| Ctrl+Print | Full screen | Captures the entire desktop display. |
| Ctrl+Shift+Print | Active Internet Explorer tab | Uses Greenshot’s documented Internet Explorer page-capture shortcut. |
These are the official help defaults, not immutable rules. If a shortcut does nothing, open Greenshot settings from the tray icon and inspect or reassign the hotkeys. Other Windows software can also claim the same key combination.

Capture a selected area precisely
- Arrange the application or webpage so the needed content is visible.
- Press Print. A crosshair and green selection guide appear.
- Hold the left mouse button and drag from one corner of the required area to the opposite corner.
- Release the button to complete the capture.
Refine the selection with the keyboard
While drawing or adjusting the green rectangle, use the arrow keys to move the cursor one pixel at a time. Hold Ctrl while pressing an arrow key to move in 10-pixel steps. This is useful for aligning a screenshot to a border, table column or exact UI control instead of relying on an imprecise mouse release.
Keep a context menu open
Context menus normally disappear when focus changes. Greenshot provides a reliable sequence:
- Open the context menu you need to show.
- Start region capture with Print.
- Press Space before selecting the region. The menu remains available for selection.
- Drag around the menu and release.
If the menu still closes, repeat the sequence without clicking elsewhere between opening the menu and pressing Space.
Capture a window, full screen or web page
Active window
Click the target window so it is the foreground window, then press Alt+Print. Greenshot captures that window rather than requiring a manual rectangle. Verify the correct application has focus first; a dialog or another window can become active unexpectedly.

Entire screen
Press Ctrl+Print to capture the full screen. On a multi-monitor setup, confirm how your Greenshot version handles displays and check the resulting image dimensions. If you need only one monitor or one application, region or active-window capture avoids extra desktop content.
Internet Explorer tab
The official help documents Ctrl+Shift+Print for the active Internet Explorer tab. This is a browser-specific command; for other browsers, use region capture, active-window capture or a web screenshot service.
Choose what happens after capture
Greenshot can open a capture in its image editor or send it directly to a configured destination. The right choice depends on whether the image needs changes.
Use the image editor for markup
Open the editor when you need to crop, draw attention to an area, add reusable objects or otherwise annotate the screenshot. Reusable editor objects are useful for repeated arrows, labels or callouts across a series of images.

Export without editing
For a finished capture, choose a configured direct destination such as a file or clipboard. Direct export avoids an extra editing step when you are collecting many unchanged screenshots.
Editor export shortcuts
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Save | Ctrl+S |
| Save As | Ctrl+Shift+S |
| Copy to clipboard | Ctrl+Shift+C |
| Ctrl+P | |
| Attach to a new email | Ctrl+E |
Greenshot’s editor also exposes these export choices through its menus. Use Save As when you need a different filename, folder or format than the current default.
A repeatable Greenshot workflow
- Prepare the view: close unrelated windows, expand the relevant panel and scroll to the exact content.
- Select the scope: region for a precise part, active window for one application, or full screen for everything visible.
- Capture: use the matching shortcut or the tray icon.
- Correct the boundary: use arrow-key pixel movement or Ctrl+arrow 10-pixel movement during region selection.
- Edit only when needed: add annotations or reusable objects in the image editor.
- Export deliberately: save a file for an archive, copy for a quick paste, print for paper, or email for sharing.
- Check the result: open the saved image and confirm that text, menus and the intended window are present before closing the source application.
Troubleshooting Greenshot captures
The Print key does nothing
- Confirm Greenshot is running and its green tray icon is visible.
- Check Greenshot’s hotkey settings; another utility may have claimed Print.
- Try the tray icon’s capture command to separate a hotkey conflict from a capture failure.
- On a laptop, try the keyboard’s Fn modifier or remap the Greenshot shortcut.
The wrong window was captured
Click the intended window immediately before pressing Alt+Print. Menus, dialogs and remote-desktop surfaces can change focus, so active-window capture is not the same as “the window I meant.” Use region capture when focus is unreliable.
The context menu vanished
Open the menu, press Print, then press Space before dragging. Do not click another application between those actions.

- Computer mouse for easily navigating a computer interface; click, scroll, and more
- USB-A wired connection; if existing device only supports USB-C, an additional adapter will be required
- High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
- 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control
- Plug-and-go ready for instant use
The screenshot has unwanted content
Use region capture and trim the rectangle with arrow-key adjustment. For a full-screen capture, crop in the editor before saving. Re-capturing is preferable when sensitive information was visible outside the intended area.
Annotations or edits were lost
Do not close the editor before exporting. Use Ctrl+S for the current file or Ctrl+Shift+S to create a separately named copy.
The image is too large to share
Capture only the required region, or crop it in the editor. A smaller pixel area is usually clearer than shrinking a full desktop image until text becomes unreadable.

Greenshot is a Windows desktop utility. It is a strong fit for a person who can display the page locally and wants immediate selection, annotation and export. It is less suitable when a server, build pipeline or AI agent must capture a URL without opening a desktop browser. Those cases need an HTTP screenshot API.
