When a website shows a 403, Cloudflare 1020, CAPTCHA, login prompt, or blank denial page, capture that visible response exactly as it appears. A screenshot preserves evidence for the site owner or support team; it does not unlock the protected page. Keep the browser message, URL, time, error code, request identifier, and any Cloudflare Ray ID in the frame and save the original file before annotating or cropping it.
Capture the denial in your regular browser first
The browser session is the best record of what you actually saw. Use the operating-system or browser screenshot command rather than trying to force the page to load through another tool.
Windows
- Press Win + Shift + S, choose Rectangle or Full screen, and include the complete browser window.
- Save the image from the Snipping Tool. Do not overwrite the original with an annotated copy.
macOS
- Press Shift + Command + 4 and drag around the browser window, or press Shift + Command + 5 for window and full-screen options.
- Keep the address bar and denial text visible, then save the captured file.
ChromeOS
- Press Ctrl + Show windows for a full-screen capture, or Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to select an area.
- Choose the browser-window or full-screen option when available so explanatory text is not lost.
iPhone and iPad
- On a device with Face ID, press the side button and volume-up button together. On models with a Home button, press the side or top button and Home together.
- Tap the thumbnail to mark up a copy, but retain the unedited image in Photos.
Android
- Press Power and Volume Down together. Some manufacturers provide a Screenshot command in Quick Settings.
- Save the original capture and avoid cropping out the status bar if it contains useful time or network information.
If the denial is long, take additional captures or use the browser’s print-to-PDF function as a supplementary record. A PDF is not a substitute for the original image when the support team needs to inspect the exact rendered message.
What to preserve with the image
- Complete message: Include wording such as “Access to www.netflix.com was denied,” “HTTP ERROR 403,” or “Error 1020: Access denied,” rather than only the headline.
- Address: Copy the full page URL, including the path and query string if it identifies the request.
- Date and time: Record your local time and time zone in a note. If the device clock may be wrong, note that too.
- Identifiers: Preserve a Cloudflare Ray ID, request ID, incident code, or support reference shown on the page.
- Context: Note the browser version, device, network (home, office, VPN, or mobile), and whether the same address works in another ordinary browser.
Keep the untouched image in a read-only folder or back it up. Add arrows or redaction only to a separate copy, and do not redact a request identifier that the site owner needs to search its logs.

What common blocks mean
HTTP 403 or an access-denied page
HTTP 403 means the server is refusing the request. The code alone does not identify whether the cause is an account rule, network policy, geographic restriction, web-application firewall, or an automation decision. Send the image and context to the website operator instead of treating the screenshot as a diagnosis.
Cloudflare Error 1020
Cloudflare defines Error 1020 as access denied by a Cloudflare firewall rule. Its visitor guidance is explicit: “If you are not the website owner, provide the website owner with a screenshot of the 1020 error message you received.” Include the Ray ID or client IP when shown; Cloudflare says the owner can search Security Events with those details. CAPTCHA or bot challenge
A CAPTCHA is an anti-bot check, not proof that the destination content is unavailable. If it appears in a normal browser, complete it only through the site’s ordinary flow and follow the site’s terms. If the widget itself is broken, Google’s reCAPTCHA help recommends updating the browser, enabling JavaScript, and disabling conflicting plugins; contact the webmaster when the integration remains broken.
Login prompt
A login screen usually means the page requires an account or a fresh session. Capture the prompt without exposing passwords, recovery codes, or private account data. Ask the owner for the correct account or an approved public URL.

Blank or partially rendered page
A blank image can result from a script failure, a timeout, a blocked resource, or automation detection. A screenshot documents the symptom but cannot distinguish those causes by itself. Browserless lists blank or white screenshots, CAPTCHA screens, 403 pages, and missing elements as signs that a site may be blocking automation; its documentation is a troubleshooting reference, not a universal diagnosis.
Send useful evidence to the site owner
- Open the site’s published support, abuse, or webmaster contact route. Use the normal account-support process for a login-related issue.
- Attach the original screenshot and a short timeline: URL, timestamp with time zone, device, browser, network, and whether retries produced the same result.
- Quote the exact error and provide the Ray ID, request ID, or other identifier as text as well as in the image.
- Ask the operator to investigate the firewall or account event and, if appropriate, provide an approved access route or allow-list process.
Do not publish session cookies, authorization headers, passwords, or personal data in a public issue. If support requests logs, send only the minimum relevant material through its secure channel.
When the page works normally but automation is blocked
A hosted screenshot service can render only what its browser session is permitted to reach. It may receive the challenge, login page, blank response, or 403 instead of the target content. That result is valuable evidence of the automated session’s response, not a way around the restriction.
For an authorized, authenticated workflow, use a valid session cookie or the service’s supported login mechanism. Cloudflare Browser Run’s screenshot endpoint documentation describes processing HTML and JavaScript before capture and lists valid session cookies for pages that require login. A cookie proves that session to the service; it does not grant permission, bypass a firewall, or defeat a CAPTCHA.

Responsible automated workflow
- Confirm that the site owner has authorized automated access and define the permitted URLs and rate.
- Capture a control page in a normal browser and save its URL and expected visual state.
- Run the authorized capture with rendering waits and, where supported, valid session cookies.
- Classify the response as target content, login prompt, challenge, blank page, timeout, or denial. Store the screenshot and response metadata.
- If a challenge persists, stop increasing delays. Use a human handoff or the owner’s approved allow-list route.
A CAPTCHA that appears in automation is not fixed by simply waiting longer. AWS recommends a live view that lets an end user take control and solve a CAPTCHA when needed; use that approach only where the workflow and site owner permit it.

The screenshot is cropped
Recapture the entire browser window and include the address bar, explanatory text, code, timestamp, and identifiers. Send the uncropped original, then mark up a duplicate.
The page changes between captures
Record each timestamp and network. A rotating challenge, expiring session, or changing firewall rule can produce different results; do not merge captures into one timeline.

Treat the difference as an automation block signal. Verify authorization, reduce unnecessary automation, and request an owner-approved human handoff or allow-list. Do not describe defeating the CAPTCHA as routine troubleshooting.
Automation shows a login screen
Use the authorized account flow or provide a valid session cookie where the service supports it. Never copy credentials into a screenshot URL or expose them in logs.

CAPTCHA fails in an ordinary browser
Update the browser, enable JavaScript, disable conflicting plugins, and retry through the site’s normal page. If it still fails, send the screenshot and browser details to the webmaster.
A service-specific 403 persists
Follow that service’s support instructions. For example, Netflix says its BLOCKED or HTTP 403 message can be a temporary device or network connection issue; it suggests closing Netflix browser tabs and windows, trying again, and contacting support if it persists. That advice is specific to Netflix and is not a general fix for every 403.

Does a screenshot prove why access was blocked?
No. It proves what the browser or automated session displayed. The site operator must inspect firewall, account, and request logs to determine the cause.
Should I keep the browser address bar in the image?
Yes. The URL and surrounding message help support staff reproduce and identify the affected route.
Can I use a screenshot API to bypass a CAPTCHA?
No. Use the normal user flow, a permitted human handoff, or an owner-approved allow-list route.
