Use a real browser to render the local HTML, then call its screenshot API. Playwright can load a local page with page.goto() or render an HTML string with page.setContent(). Capture the viewport with page.screenshot(), the entire scrollable document with fullPage: true, or one visible element with locator.screenshot(). The browser must finish layout, fonts, images and application code before the pixels are reliable.
Choose the right way to load local HTML
There are two practical inputs:
- A local file: navigate to a
file:///URL. The absolute path and browser configuration determine whether sibling assets, modules and fetch requests work. The official Playwright documentation does not promise identicalfile://behavior across browser engines, so verify this in the browser you use. - An HTML string: call
page.setContent(html). This is convenient for generated markup, but linked local resources and origin-dependent features may need additional handling.
If your page uses CSS, images, JavaScript modules or data fetched from another origin, test those dependencies separately. A screenshot can be technically successful while showing missing assets or an application that has not finished rendering.
Install Playwright
In a new Node.js project, install the library and its browsers:
npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install
The examples below use the Playwright Library API. They are patterns to adapt to your environment, not a guarantee that every browser accepts every local-file URL.

Capture a local page with Playwright
Create capture-local.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('file:///absolute/path/to/page.html');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace the path with an absolute path in the format appropriate for your operating system. The default screenshot is the current viewport, so content below the fold is not included.
Render markup held in a string
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const html = `<!doctype html>
<html><body><h1>Generated page</h1></body></html>`;
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.setContent(html);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'generated.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
setContent renders the supplied document. Relative links, local files and APIs that depend on an origin may not resolve as they do from your normal development server.
Capture the viewport or the full document
Current viewport
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
This captures exactly what fits in the configured viewport.
Entire scrollable page
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true });
Playwright documents fullPage as a capture of the full scrollable page. Very long pages can produce large images; consider an image format and scale that suit your downstream use.

Capture one HTML element
Use a locator for the element you want:
const card = page.locator('.target');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
The locator API performs actionability checks and scrolls the target into view. A target covered by another element is not actually visible in the resulting image. For a scrollable container, the screenshot contains the portion currently visible inside that container, not all of its hidden scroll content.
Use a stable selector such as an ID or a dedicated data attribute:
await page.locator('[data-screenshot="invoice"]').screenshot({
path: 'invoice.png'
});
If the element is rendered conditionally, wait for it before capture:
const panel = page.locator('#results');
await panel.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await panel.screenshot({ path: 'results.png' });
Puppeteer offers the analogous Page.screenshot() and ElementHandle.screenshot() methods. Its guide says the element-handle method attempts to scroll a hidden element into view. Choose the framework already used by your project; neither is universally better for local files or asset loading.

Make output deterministic
| Setting | Why it matters | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | Responsive breakpoints change layout. | page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 }) |
| Full page | Includes content below the fold. | fullPage: true |
| Format | PNG is lossless; JPEG and WebP can be smaller. | type: 'webp' |
| Quality | Applies to lossy formats. | quality: 85 |
| Scale | Controls CSS pixels versus device pixels. | scale: 'css' |
| Transparency | Useful for screenshots without a page background. | omitBackground: true |
Playwright’s documented screenshot options also include masking and style overrides. With scale: 'css', one output pixel corresponds to one CSS pixel. The default scale: 'device' uses device pixels and can create larger high-density images.
Wait for the visual state, not merely navigation
page.goto() returning means navigation reached its selected load condition; it does not prove that application code, fonts, images or canvases are ready. Wait for a meaningful assertion or selector:
await page.goto('file:///absolute/path/to/page.html');
await page.locator('#dashboard').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', scale: 'css' });
For images, you can wait in page context:
await page.waitForFunction(() =>
Array.from(document.images).every(img => img.complete)
);
Fonts, timers, canvas drawing and lazy-loaded content may require application-specific waits. Current Playwright API guidance labels networkidle discouraged for testing; do not treat it as a universal readiness signal. Disable animations when a stable visual diff is important, or use a style override that sets animation and transition durations to zero.
Return image bytes for further processing
Omit path and Playwright returns a buffer:
const bytes = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
require('fs').writeFileSync('processed.png', bytes);
This is useful for hashing, visual comparisons, uploading to object storage or passing the image to another service without creating an intermediate file.

Common failures and fixes
- Blank or incomplete image: wait for the selector that proves the app is ready; check image and font completion; ensure scripts did not throw in the page.
- “Target closed” or browser launch failure: install the Playwright browser binaries with
npx playwright install, and check that the runtime can start a headless browser. - Local CSS or images missing: use an absolute
file:///path, confirm relative paths, or serve the directory over a local HTTP server. Origin restrictions can affect modules and fetch calls. - Element screenshot times out: verify the selector, wait for visibility, and inspect whether a modal, cookie notice or other element covers the target.
- Only part of a scrollable widget appears: this is expected for an element screenshot; capture the widget’s needed state by scrolling it first, or capture the full page if appropriate.
- Unexpected mobile or desktop layout: set the viewport before navigation and choose the intended device scale.
- Animations differ between runs: disable animations or wait for a stable application state before taking the shot.
- Huge output files: choose WebP or JPEG with an appropriate quality, use CSS scale, or capture only the required element.
Playwright or Puppeteer?
| Decision point | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Language and runtime | Use the framework that matches your existing Node.js code and test tooling. |
| Browser engines | Confirm the engines you need and how they handle local files and assets in your environment. |
| Capture scope | Both document page and element screenshot APIs; verify full-page and element controls in your chosen version. |
| Dependencies | Reusing an installed framework avoids another browser download and configuration path. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It renders a URL in a browser and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.
For a public or locally hosted page, make the URL reachable to the API, then call the endpoint. Full API documentation is at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot an HTML file without opening a visible browser window?
Yes. Playwright and Puppeteer launch headless browsers by default in the examples, render the document, and save the resulting image.
Why does an element screenshot not include all content in a scrollable box?
Element capture represents the element’s visible state. Scroll the container to the desired position first, or use a page capture when the entire document is the required scope.
