How to Capture Screenshots of Indian News Websites at Scale with Browserless

For repeatable, one-page-at-a-time captures, use Browserless’s authenticated POST /screenshot REST endpoint: send a URL and capture options, then save the returned PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. Set full-page capture for whole articles, scroll pages to trigger lazy-loaded content, and validate results before expanding a batch. Browserless does not document a universal safe request rate for Indian publishers, so scale only after checking each site’s terms and access controls.

Choose the Browserless route for the job

Browserless documents three useful patterns. The right choice depends on whether each URL is an independent capture, whether you also need extracted page data, or whether the browser must interact with the page before capture.

Need Browserless route What it does
One image from a URL or raw HTML POST /screenshot Returns a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image response and accepts screenshot options. Browserless Screenshot API
A screenshot alongside other page outputs Smart Scrape with formats: ["screenshot"] Returns the screenshot as a base64 PNG alongside other requested output fields. Requesting screenshot output forces a headless browser. Browserless Smart Scrape API
Multiple actions or conditional interaction Scripted browser workflow Use a managed browser session when the workflow must act on the page or branch on what it finds. Browserless: Scrape a website URL

For independent snapshots, start with REST: one authenticated POST per target. Browserless describes REST as suited to stateless, one-shot tasks; it does not publish a publisher-safe concurrency setting or a throughput target in the cited endpoint documentation. For endpoint selection and token authentication, see Browserless REST APIs.

Make a single screenshot request

Obtain a Browserless API token and use it to authenticate the request. The exact endpoint URL includes the Browserless service host and the /screenshot path; follow the current authentication instructions for your account in the REST API documentation. This shell example uses cURL, posts a target URL and requests a full-page PNG. Save the response as an image, then inspect it before treating the request as successful.

#1 Best Overall
curl -X POST "https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_TOKEN"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  --output capture.png
  --data '{
    "url": "https://example.com/article",
    "options": {
      "fullPage": true,
      "type": "png",
      "scrollPage": true
    }
  }'

Replace the host with the Browserless endpoint for your account and YOUR_TOKEN with your API token. Browserless’s screenshot endpoint also accepts raw HTML input. Check the endpoint’s current request schema for the precise input and option names available to your account.

Set capture options for news pages

Capture the whole article or a specific region

Use full-page mode for a complete article, including content below the initial viewport. If you need only a particular part of a page, use a selector to target an element or clipping options to define a fixed rectangle. A full-page image can become unwieldy on a very long page, so inspect representative outputs for clipping and usability before automating a large collection.

Choose format, viewport, and scale deliberately

Browserless supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, as well as viewport and device-scale settings. PNG is a reasonable choice when preserving visual detail matters; JPEG or WebP may suit workflows where file size is more important and the receiving system supports the format. Keep viewport and scale consistent if captures need to be compared. The documentation lists these controls but does not prescribe settings specifically for Indian news websites. See the Screenshot API options for current parameters, including quality and clipping.

Wait for content and trigger lazy loading

For dynamic pages, prefer a meaningful wait—such as waiting for a relevant selector or page event—over relying on an arbitrarily short delay. Long articles may load images or other content only as the page scrolls. Browserless documents scrollPage: true to trigger lazy loading; combine it with full-page capture when the goal is an entire article. The selector, wait condition, and viewport will vary by site and page template.

Turn captures into a controlled batch

  1. Prepare a manifest. Record each target URL with a stable identifier so every image can be traced back to its source page.
  2. Fix the capture profile. Choose the format, viewport, scale, full-page or target-region behavior, and wait conditions. Record the options with each result.
  3. Submit one request per independent page. Keep the response associated with its manifest entry rather than relying on filenames alone.
  4. Record outcomes. Store the URL, capture timestamp, response status, options, and a clear success or failure result. A returned image is not automatically a valid article capture.
  5. Retry selectively. Retry only failures that appear transient, with bounded attempts and recorded delays. Repeated CAPTCHA or access-denied responses should be flagged for review, not retried as if they were ordinary timeouts.
  6. Validate before increasing volume. Check a representative mix of home pages, article pages, long pages, and pages with dynamic content. Confirm that the expected material appears and the image is not clipped or a challenge/error screen.

These are operational safeguards, not Browserless rate guarantees. The documentation reviewed does not establish a sustainable request rate, a scale limit, or a universal concurrency setting for Indian news publishers.

Check access rights before capturing or sharing

There is no blanket permission established here for automating Indian news sites. Before a bulk run, check the current terms and automated-access requirements of each publisher, along with any access controls encountered. A successful screenshot response does not grant rights to retain, republish, or redistribute the page image. If screenshots will be shared or republished, assess those rights separately.

Identify and handle failed or misleading captures

  • Blank or white image: The page may not have rendered before capture, or the site may be blocking automation. Inspect the page state and logs and adjust waits only when there is a clear rendering reason.
  • CAPTCHA or access-denied/403 screen: Record this as a blocked visit, not a screenshot of the article. Do not treat challenge pages as successful captures.
  • Missing images or article sections: The page may load material lazily. Enable scrolling before full-page capture and verify the resulting image.
  • Wrong crop or incomplete page: Recheck the selector, clipping rectangle, viewport, and full-page setting against the intended output.
  • Need to click, branch, or react to page state: A single stateless REST request is not suited to conditional interaction. Use a scripted browser workflow when the capture depends on multiple actions.

Browserless’s troubleshooting guidance identifies blank images, CAPTCHA pages, and content unlike what a real browser would show as signs that a site may be blocking automation.

Separate visual capture from text extraction

If the required artifact is a visual record, use the screenshot output. If you also need searchable text or structured content, treat extraction as a separate task and record which endpoint produced each artifact. Browserless documents screenshot, rendered-content, and structured-scrape endpoints as distinct functions; Smart Scrape is an option when screenshot output is needed alongside other requested formats.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can remove cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

One GET request returns the screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For Indian news pages, replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Browserless screenshot request capture a full Indian news article?

Yes. The Screenshot API supports full-page capture; for lazy-loaded material, enable scrolling and inspect the resulting image for missing content.

Does Browserless specify how many Indian news pages I can capture per minute?

The cited documentation does not establish a safe or permitted rate for Indian publishers. Check each site’s requirements and do not infer a throughput guarantee from the API examples.

Does a screenshot response mean I can republish the article image?

No. A successful capture does not establish permission to reuse or distribute the publisher’s content.
