How to Capture Screenshots of Indian Government Websites with Loki

Loki is for screenshotting and visually comparing Storybook stories, not for navigating to any arbitrary live URL. Use it when you have a Storybook implementation of a government page you own or are authorized to test. If you need to capture a live Indian government website, the documented Loki workflow does not establish how to do that; use an authorized browser-capture method instead.

What Loki can capture—and what it cannot establish

Loki integrates with Storybook: it captures tested stories, compares the resulting images with reference screenshots, and helps you review visual differences. Its official materials describe this Storybook workflow, not a command that accepts an arbitrary public URL. See the Loki getting-started guide and Loki command-line options.

That distinction matters for Indian government websites. If your team has recreated or implemented a page in Storybook, Loki can help check that implementation across runs. It does not follow from the documented workflow that Loki can open and screenshot a live government portal directly.

Set up Loki for a Storybook project

  1. Check the project’s installed Node.js and Storybook versions against the Loki instructions you intend to follow. The Loki getting-started guide lists Node 16+ and describes installing Loki as a development dependency; because the available instructions are dated, confirm compatibility with your actual project versions.

    • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  2. Add Loki as a development dependency and initialize its configuration using the official getting-started guide. Integrate it with the Storybook project containing the stories you want to test.

  3. Start Storybook in the configured environment, then run Loki’s test command. Loki captures the tested stories, compares them with reference images, and writes the current screenshots and differences to its configured output locations.

  4. Review the captured images and diffs. If a visual change is intentional, use the update or approval workflow described in Loki’s documentation to refresh the references. Approval changes the baseline; it is not evidence by itself that the page is correct.

Understand Loki’s test, update, and approval outputs

Loki keeps generated output distinct from approved references. Its documented default paths are .loki/current for current captures, .loki/difference for image differences, and .loki/reference for reference images. These locations can be configured. Consult the command-line options for the behavior of the commands in your installed version.

  • Test: captures the configured stories and compares them against references.
  • Update: establishes or refreshes reference screenshots as documented for the project.
  • Approve: the documented approval command updates reference files from images generated in the last run. Review those images before approving them.

Keep generated captures and differences separate from reviewed reference images. This makes it easier to see whether a change is new, expected, or accidentally accepted into the baseline.

Make Storybook captures repeatable

Visual comparisons are useful only when the conditions are consistent enough to interpret. Keep the Storybook state, browser target, viewport or capture configuration, and page content stable between runs. If those inputs change, the diff may reflect the test setup rather than a meaningful design change.

Load timing

Loki provides a configurable Chrome load timeout. Set it with the needs of the Storybook page in mind: content that has not loaded by capture time may be absent, while waiting longer can increase run time. If a capture is incomplete, first check the page’s loading behavior and the configured timeout.

Selector-based capture

Loki’s chromeSelector setting crops the capture to the selected dimensions. It does not isolate the selected element from absolutely positioned content that overlaps that region. If an overlay or other positioned content appears in the result, inspect the surrounding layout and the crop dimensions rather than assuming the selector excludes overlapping elements. See the Loki configuration documentation.

Handle government-page context and accessibility responsibly

The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) apply to government websites and applications at central, state, district, and local levels. Their stated aims include usability, user-centricity, and universal accessibility. A visual screenshot can document appearance, but it cannot establish that the page is accessible.

GIGW accessibility guidance addresses text alternatives for non-text content, including CAPTCHA content, and says alternative CAPTCHA forms should accommodate different sensory perceptions. Do not try to defeat a CAPTCHA or other access control to obtain a capture. For documentation, retain an accessible text or document version where appropriate and explain what the image does—and does not—show.

When publishing a screenshot, include enough context for a reader to identify it: the page or service name, the public page URL when appropriate to share, the capture date, the language, and relevant viewport or Storybook configuration. Do not publish personal information, authentication material, or citizen records in an image.

Capture a live government URL with a separate authorized method

If your goal is an image of a live government website rather than a Storybook implementation, use a browser or capture service that supports navigating to the URL and that you are authorized to use. The Loki documentation cited above does not describe a live-URL capture workflow, so do not present such a capture as a Loki feature.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. Replace the example URL with the public page you are authorized to capture and supply your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. For details, visit ScreenshotNeo. Troubleshoot common Loki capture problems

  • You need a live page, but Loki is only capturing stories: Loki’s documented workflow targets Storybook stories. Use an authorized method that supports direct URL navigation for the live page.
  • A story times out or appears incomplete: Check that Storybook is available to Loki, inspect the page’s loading behavior, and review the configurable Chrome load timeout.
  • The diff changes between runs: Verify that the story state, page content, browser target, and viewport or capture configuration are stable before comparing images.
  • A selector crop contains unexpected content: Remember that chromeSelector crops to dimensions and does not remove absolutely positioned content overlapping the crop.
  • An approval replaces references unexpectedly: Loki’s documented approve behavior updates reference files from the last run’s generated images. Inspect current captures and differences before approving.
  • Setup instructions do not match the project: The getting-started guide lists Node 16+ and the available documentation is dated. Check instructions against the Node.js, Storybook, and Loki versions actually installed rather than assuming compatibility.

Document the capture so others can interpret it

For a Storybook visual-regression record, note which story and configuration were captured, including the relevant browser or viewport settings and date. For a live-page image, identify the public page and URL when appropriate, language, capture date, and method. Keep the screenshot distinct from an accessibility assessment, and avoid exposing private or citizen data.
