Capture each locale-specific landing page from its explicit URL, using the same viewport, scale, and page state for a fair visual comparison. A screenshot records what a renderer displayed; it does not prove that hreflang annotations or the full set of alternate URLs are correct. Validate those separately.
Build a list of the locale URLs first
List every landing-page URL you intend to review, alongside its target language or language-region. Google recommends distinct URLs for language versions and hreflang annotations that associate them. Do not rely on a cookie, browser language, or automatic redirect to expose every variant: Googlebot generally crawls from the US and does not usually send an Accept-Language header, so signal-based adaptation can leave versions undiscovered. - Record the exact URL for each intended variant, such as the English, French, or French-for-Canada landing page.
- Open each URL directly and note any required authentication, consent choice, or other page state.
- Keep the URL and locale label together in a manifest or filename so the evidence can be traced back to the page.
One screenshot of a locale-adaptive URL is not evidence that all versions are accessible or rendered for their intended audiences.

Viewport capture
Use a viewport screenshot when the first screen is the comparison target—for example, when checking the visible headline, navigation, currency, or language selector. Set the same viewport dimensions for every locale.

Full-page capture
Use a full-page image when below-the-fold localized content matters. This can reveal missing translations, inconsistent regional details, or content that differs farther down the page. Be aware that a full-page capture may include content not visible in the initial viewport.
Element capture
Capture a selected element when the review concerns a particular area, such as the language switcher, localized price block, or primary navigation. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and locator-based screenshots, as well as CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling; see its screenshot documentation.
Capture reproducible browser screenshots with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then use a short script to visit each explicit URL and save a full-page screenshot. The sample fixes the viewport and device scale factor across variants and saves one file per locale. Replace the example URLs with your own.

If a site never reaches network idle because it maintains long-lived requests, replace waitUntil: 'networkidle' with waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' and wait for a meaningful page-specific selector before capture. For an element rather than the whole page, locate it and call locator.screenshot({ path: 'switcher.png' }). For the initial viewport, omit fullPage: true.
Keep locale comparisons fair
Hold constant the capture settings and record differences in state that could change what appears. Use a manifest with fields such as locale, URL, capture time, viewport, scale, capture scope, and notes on consent or selected language. These are practical recordkeeping recommendations, not an automatic SEO audit.
- Compare whether the visible language and regional content fit the URL’s intended audience.
- Check navigation, currency or other regional details, and the language switcher.
- Record whether a consent banner, popup, or chat widget was visible, dismissed, or otherwise changed.
- When comparing a user-browser image with Google’s rendering, label the renderer for each image rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Inspect Google’s rendered view when it matters
To see what Google’s URL Inspection tool rendered, open Search Console, go to URL Inspection, enter the page URL, run Test live URL, and view the rendered screenshot after a successful test. Google says that screenshot is not available for the indexed-URL view, and an unsuccessful fetch does not provide it. The image represents the inspection tool’s rendering, not a substitute for a normal browser capture. Differences can occur when resources are blocked to Google’s inspection tool. Check hreflang separately from the screenshots
Google supports hreflang annotations in HTML, HTTP headers, or sitemaps. Each version should identify itself and all the other versions, with reciprocal return links. Check that the alternate URL set is complete, language and region values are valid, and the fallback is the intended page. Use x-default for a fallback when no listed language or region matches; it is particularly suited to a language-selector page. Google determines page language from visible content; hreflang tells Search about locale variants, rather than acting as its language-detection mechanism. Google also notes that locale-adaptive behavior can make variants harder for crawlers to discover, which is another reason to inspect explicit URLs directly.

Troubleshoot missing or misleading captures
The URL redirects to another locale
Check the final URL and the site’s redirect rules. Capture each intended locale URL directly and record if it redirects; do not assume the redirect demonstrates that every alternate is discoverable.
The screenshot shows a consent banner or popup
Record the state you want to compare, then apply it consistently. If you need a post-consent view, use the same consent interaction for each locale. A banner’s presence or absence is page-state evidence, not hreflang validation.
A page appears incomplete or times out
Check that the URL is reachable in a normal browser and whether the page depends on delayed scripts or resources. In Playwright, try a less restrictive navigation wait condition and wait for a page-specific selector. Save the failing URL and error rather than silently treating a partial capture as complete.

Google’s screenshot differs from the browser image
Confirm that the live test succeeded, then compare the images while accounting for blocked resources or differences in rendering. Google’s capture describes its inspection rendering; the browser image documents the user-facing browser view.

Inspect the annotation implementation and alternate URL set independently. Verify self-references, reciprocal links, valid language-region values, and the intended fallback. A screenshot cannot establish these properties.
