Sign in normally, confirm the exact page has finished rendering, then capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full page. A screenshot records what your account can see; it does not grant permission to access, share, or republish the material.
Before you capture: confirm access and scope
Check that your account is entitled to view the page and that your planned capture and use comply with the site’s terms and your organization’s rules. Competitor dashboards can expose customer-specific details, personal information, internal notes, or other material unrelated to your comparison. Limit the capture to what you need.

- Use an account and credentials issued to you or otherwise authorized for your use.
- Do not bypass a login, multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, device check, CAPTCHA, or other access control. If access is denied, stop and request the appropriate access.
- Decide whether the record is for internal reference, a repeated visual check, or possible publication. A screenshot does not itself give you permission to publish the page.
Choose the right capture method and scope

Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshots in its screenshot guide. Puppeteer is another browser-automation option documented by Chrome for Developers. A screenshot is useful for visual layout; Playwright’s accessibility snapshot guidance explains when a structural snapshot can help inspect page content and structure. Neither capture method is established as universally more accurate: choose according to the page, authentication flow, repeatability needs, privacy constraints, and where credentials may be handled.
Capture a page you can access
Manual one-off capture
- Open the site and sign in through its normal interface.
- Navigate to the precise page you are authorized to view. Confirm that it is the intended page, not a login screen, error, skeleton, or access-denied message.
- Wait until the content relevant to your comparison is visible and dynamic elements have settled.
- Use the browser’s screenshot capability. Capture the visible viewport for a screen-specific view, or use a full-page option if content below the fold is important.
- Save the original with the capture date and time, page URL, viewport dimensions, and relevant page or account context.
- Review the image before sharing. Redact or crop personal data, account identifiers, internal notes, or secrets when appropriate.
Repeatable capture with Playwright
Playwright’s page screenshot methods can capture a viewport, an element, or the full scrollable page. The example below assumes you already have an authorized session state file. Keep that file private: it may contain cookies or other session credentials that act like a password. Do not commit it to source control or include it in shared logs.

await browser.close();The example uses a placeholder domain, selector, and session-state filename; replace them with the authorized page and a real, stable readiness selector. Create session state only through an approved sign-in flow. Do not hard-code a password or session token into the script. If the site requires interactive MFA or SSO, use its approved route rather than trying to defeat that control.
Authentication and credential handling
Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation says, “Some webpages require authentication before you can view their content.” Its screenshot examples describe valid session cookies, HTTP Basic Authentication, and a bearer authorization header for its own service. Those examples explain API capabilities; they do not authorize access to someone else’s account or page.

A normal username-and-password login form is not necessarily HTTP Basic Authentication. If the site uses MFA, SSO, device checks, or bot protections, follow the site’s approved sign-in process or a supported authorization integration. Never paste passwords, API tokens, cookies, or authorization headers into public examples, issue trackers, or shared scripts. Prefer secret storage appropriate to your environment and restrict access to session-state files.
Make the screenshot interpretable
For a useful visual record, save the original and note the capture date and time, exact page URL, viewport dimensions, browser or automation version, and relevant page state or account context. For a full-page image, note whether content appeared only after scrolling or lazy loading. If text and structure matter as much as appearance, pair the image with an accessibility or text snapshot where your tool supports one; do not treat the image alone as proof of page structure.

Before sharing, inspect for personal details, account identifiers, confidential information, and credentials accidentally visible on screen. Limit access to people who need the record, and distinguish what the image directly shows from your interpretation of it.

Common problems and fixes
- The capture shows a login page. The session may be missing, expired, or not applied to the browser context. Sign in through the authorized route and verify the target page in the same session before automating.
- The capture shows an error or access-denied page. Confirm the page URL and account entitlement. If access is denied, stop; do not attempt to bypass the restriction.
- The page is blank or still loading. A navigation event alone may not mean the content is ready. Wait for a stable, visible element that represents the content you need, then confirm it is present before capture.
- Content below the fold is missing. Use full-page capture where supported and check whether the page loads content only after scrolling.
- The image contains personal or confidential data. Do not share it as-is. Restrict access and redact or crop unnecessary sensitive material, retaining an unaltered original only where appropriate.
- Automation fails at MFA, SSO, or a bot check. Use the site’s approved sign-in route or a vendor-supported integration. Do not try to evade those protections.
Legal and reuse boundaries
The legal sources here are U.S.-specific and do not decide every situation. In Van Buren v. United States (2021), the Supreme Court interpreted “exceeds authorized access” in relation to obtaining information from computer areas off-limits to the user. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Justice Manual says a CFAA prosecution may not be brought solely on the theory that someone exceeded authorized access by violating a contractual agreement or website terms-of-service restriction. Neither point is a blanket permission to capture competitor content: authorization facts, contract, privacy, copyright, trade-secret, and other rules may still matter.
For publication or other reuse in the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office’s fair-use guidance describes a case-specific assessment involving purpose and character, nature of the work, amount used, and market effect; it is not legal advice. Internal capture does not automatically authorize publishing the screenshot. Consider permission, reproduce only what is needed, and seek legal advice when commercial publication or sensitive material is involved.

Yes, if you are authorized to access the page and the tool supports full-page capture. Check that content loaded below the fold is included, especially on pages that load content as you scroll.
Is a screenshot of a competitor’s page automatically safe to publish?
No. Access permission and permission to reproduce or publish are separate questions; the relevant rules depend on the facts, intended use, and jurisdiction.
