Firefox can save or copy a selected area, a visible view, or an entire webpage from its built-in screenshot tool. Safari uses the Mac’s screenshot controls, while Safari on iPhone can capture a webpage beyond the screen with the Full Page option. Choose the steps below for your device and the kind of image you need.
Choose the right screenshot method
| Device and browser | Best built-in method | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox on Windows or Linux | Take Screenshot from the page context menu or Ctrl+Shift+S | A selection, detected page part, visible view, or full webpage |
| Firefox on Mac | Take Screenshot from the page context menu or Command+Shift+S | A selection, detected page part, visible view, or full webpage |
| Safari on Mac | macOS Screenshot shortcuts or the Screenshot app | The screen, a selected area, a window, or a menu; not a scrolling webpage as one full-page image |
| Safari on iPhone | Take a screenshot, open its thumbnail, then choose Full Page | A scrollable Safari webpage, including content beyond the display |
For Firefox, the browser’s screenshot tool is the most direct choice when the capture should include page content rather than the browser window or desktop. On Mac, Safari screenshots are handled by macOS. On iPhone, use the screenshot editor’s Full Page view when you need content farther down the webpage.
Capture a webpage in Firefox
Use the built-in Take Screenshot tool
- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. On a Mac, Control-click if needed. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose what to capture: drag a custom region, select an automatically highlighted page part, choose Save full page, or choose Save visible.
- Select Download to save the image to Firefox’s normal download folder, or Copy to put it on the clipboard. Press Escape to cancel.
Firefox’s full-page option captures the webpage beyond the portion currently visible in the window. It is useful for a long article, receipt, or page layout that would otherwise require several separate images. Use Save visible when you need only what is currently on screen.
Add the command to the toolbar
If you use the screenshot tool regularly, open Menu > More Tools > Customize Toolbar and add Screenshot. The toolbar shortcut avoids reopening the page context menu each time.

Capture a specific element with Firefox DevTools
DevTools can capture one DOM element—such as a chart, card, or image—rather than a region defined by screen coordinates.
- Open Firefox DevTools and its Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page if you need the DevTools full-page control, then click that button to capture the page.
- To capture one element, open the Inspector, right-click the element in the HTML pane, and choose Screenshot Node.
Firefox saves these DevTools captures to Downloads. Use the regular screenshot tool for a quick page or region capture; use Screenshot Node when the target needs to match a particular element in the page structure.

Take a screenshot in Safari on Mac
Safari on Mac uses the macOS screenshot controls. Bring the Safari window to the front and use the shortcut that matches the capture you need:
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag to select a rectangular area.
- Shift-Command-4, then press Space: capture a window or menu. Move the camera pointer over the Safari window or menu and click.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app, which provides capture options including a timer and save-location controls.
Screenshots normally appear on the desktop with a name such as “Screen Shot [date] at [time]”. In the Screenshot app, change the save location if you want captures stored elsewhere. To copy a capture rather than save it as a file, Control-click its thumbnail.

Why Save As is not the same as a screenshot
Safari’s File > Save As menu offers Web Archive and Page Source. A Web Archive preserves webpage content such as graphics and links; Page Source saves HTML. Neither is a screenshot image. Choose one of them when you want an archive or source file, and use macOS Screenshot when the result needs to be an image.
Capture a full Safari webpage on iPhone
- Press and quickly release Side button + Volume Up. On an iPhone with a Home button, press Side button + Home.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail that appears.
- Choose Full Page to view the capture extending beyond the display. Adjust the crop handles if needed, then save or share it.
The Full Page choice is in the screenshot preview flow; it is not a separate Safari menu command. Apple’s iPhone User Guide gives Safari webpages as an example of content that can be captured this way. If you only need what is currently visible, keep the regular screenshot instead of switching to Full Page.

Compare the built-in options
| Method | Scope | Output and precision |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox Take Screenshot | Page area, detected page part, visible view, or full webpage | Download an image or copy it to the clipboard |
| Firefox DevTools | Entire page or a selected DOM element | Saved to Downloads; element targeting follows the page structure |
| macOS Screenshot with Safari | Entire screen, dragged area, window, or menu | Saved to a chosen location, or copied from the thumbnail; selection is based on screen geometry |
| iPhone screenshot with Full Page | Scrollable Safari webpage | Review and crop in the screenshot preview, then save or share |
For capturing a web page, Firefox and iPhone Full Page offer browser-content-oriented options. macOS controls are useful for documenting Safari as it appears on screen, including the surrounding interface, but they capture screen geometry rather than a page’s full scrollable contents.

Firefox does not open Take Screenshot
- Make sure the page itself has focus, then try the context menu on an empty page area or the platform-specific shortcut.
- If the normal page command is unavailable, use the DevTools route: enable the full-page screenshot toolbox button in Settings, or use Screenshot Node from the Inspector for a specific element.
- Press Escape to exit a selection that was started accidentally, then reopen the tool and choose the desired capture mode.
The Firefox image is missing part of the page
Check whether you chose Save visible rather than Save full page. For one component within the page, use the Inspector’s Screenshot Node rather than trying to frame it precisely by dragging.

Safari on Mac saves a screen image instead of the whole webpage
macOS shortcuts capture the entire screen, a selection, or a window; they do not provide the iPhone-style Full Page webpage flow. If the task requires an image of the complete webpage, use Firefox’s full-page option or capture Safari on an iPhone with Full Page. If you need page content rather than an image, Safari’s Web Archive is a separate save format.
Full Page is not available in the iPhone preview
Confirm that you opened the screenshot thumbnail and that the capture is of a Safari webpage. The Full Page control appears in the screenshot preview flow for supported scrollable content; a regular screenshot by itself shows only the screen capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable screenshots in a script or an AI-agent workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
