Capture an x402 exchange as separate, labeled states: the unpaid request and 402 Payment Required challenge, the retry carrying payment authorization, and the resulting response or error. Preserve the relevant protocol headers and implementation context alongside each image. For the screenshot-x402 API specifically, set fullPage to true; its reference says the option defaults to false.
What to capture in an x402 flow
x402 is an HTTP payment protocol. A typical flow starts with a request that receives a 402 Payment Required challenge. The client interprets the accepted payment requirements, creates a payment payload, retries with payment authorization, and the server verifies it. The exact scheme, network, transport, and settlement behavior can vary, so identify the implementation and protocol version when documenting a flow. The x402 repository and its specifications describe the protocol and its variants.

Challenge: unpaid request
Capture the request without payment and the resulting 402 state. In the x402 v2 HTTP transport, the PAYMENT-REQUIRED header carries the payment challenge. Preserve the header or a safely decoded representation so readers can see the accepted requirements, rather than relying on the status code alone. See the x402 HTTP transport specification.
Authorization and retry
Record the retry as a distinct state. In v2 HTTP, PAYMENT-SIGNATURE carries the client’s payment authorization. Treat signed authorization data as sensitive operational information: redact wallet secrets, credentials, or other sensitive values before sharing an image or accompanying trace. The x402 specification distinguishes transport details from scheme and settlement logic.

Outcome or failure
Capture the response after the server’s verification and settlement path. If the implementation returns PAYMENT-RESPONSE, retain it as evidence of that response; do not assume every implementation returns the header or settles at the same point. For failures, record the exact status, response detail, relevant headers, implementation, and whether the failure occurred before or after settlement.
Prepare a useful screenshot sequence
- Identify the context. Note the x402 version, implementation, transport, payment scheme, network, and the particular behavior being demonstrated. These distinctions matter because x402 supports multiple schemes, networks, and transports.
- Capture the challenge. Show the unpaid request and its 402 response. Preserve
PAYMENT-REQUIREDin a safe, readable form. - Capture the retry. Show the request carrying
PAYMENT-SIGNATURE, with sensitive values redacted from any published capture. - Capture the outcome. Include the response and
PAYMENT-RESPONSEif that implementation provides it. Caption the state as success, failure, or another observed outcome rather than implying a universal settlement sequence. - Add relevant error states. Capture the specific error being explained and include enough implementation and response context to interpret it.
Use a short caption for every image, such as “Unpaid request: 402 challenge” or “Retry: authorization supplied.” Keep the three principal states separate; a single image of a final page does not show which request or protocol response produced it.

Enable full-page capture where the API supports it
The screenshot-x402 API reference documents viewport width and height and a fullPage option for capturing the full scrollable page. It lists false as the default, so set it explicitly to true when you need a full-page image. This is a setting documented for that API, not a guarantee that all screenshot tools handle long pages the same way.
The available reference does not establish behavior for sticky elements, lazy-loaded content, asynchronous UI, animation, or extremely long pages. Do not claim a capture proves those states were fully rendered merely because full-page mode was enabled. Verify the relevant content in the resulting image and preserve the protocol exchange separately when the screenshot alone cannot show it.
Interpret errors without overgeneralizing
One implementation’s documentation lists errors that include missing or invalid authorization, authorization already being settled, rate limiting, facilitator unavailability, and uncertain settlement. These are useful cases to consider, not a universal x402 error catalog. The fetchx402 error documentation is implementation-specific.

- Record the exact status and response body or detail shown by the implementation.
- Preserve relevant protocol headers, with sensitive authorization material redacted.
- Label whether the error happened before verification, during processing, or after a possible settlement, if the implementation makes that clear.
- Do not infer that a missing settlement receipt means no payment occurred unless the implementation documents that conclusion.
