To capture just part of a Windows screen, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, and select the area. Pressing Print Screen (PrtScn) by itself is documented as taking a snapshot of the entire screen and copying it to the clipboard—not as selecting a region. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-4 and drag over the portion you want.
Capture a selected area on Windows
Use the Snipping Tool shortcut rather than bare Print Screen when you want to snip a section of a page, image, or other visible content. Microsoft documents Windows logo key + Shift + S as the shortcut that opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. The screen dims while you choose a mode and select what to capture.
- Open the content you want to capture and make the relevant area visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S at the same time.
- Choose the capture shape in the overlay: Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
- Make the selection. For Rectangle or Freeform, drag across or outline the area; for Window, select the target window; for Full screen, capture the entire display.
- Use the captured image from the clipboard by pasting it into an app that accepts images, or open the capture in Snipping Tool to manage it there. The exact save destination depends on the tool and settings; do not assume every snip is automatically saved as a file.
If your goal is a rectangular crop from a web page, choose Rectangle and drag around the desired passage or image. Freeform is useful when the outline itself needs an irregular shape. Window is a better fit when you want a whole app window without drawing around it. Full screen is not a partial capture, but it is available in the same overlay.
Choose the capture mode

What Print Screen does—and why it may not select an area
Print Screen is the name of a key and, in ordinary Windows use, people often use it to mean “take a screenshot.” But the documented action for pressing PrtScn alone is a static image snapshot of the entire screen placed on the clipboard. It does not inherently mean “let me draw a rectangle.” For a selected portion, start with Windows + Shift + S.

Keyboard behavior can depend on the device and settings. Microsoft also documents Windows logo key + PrtScn as a shortcut on some hardware, and Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an option for devices without a PrtScn key. These are keyboard alternatives, not a guarantee that bare PrtScn will open the region selector. If your keyboard has no accessible PrtScn key, try the documented Fn combination or use the Snipping Tool shortcut directly.
Copy the capture or save it as a file
A screenshot’s destination is a separate question from what area it captures. Snipping Tool’s region workflow and Print Screen’s clipboard behavior should not be treated as identical file-saving workflows: Microsoft describes bare PrtScn as copying the full-screen snapshot to the clipboard, while the available destination for a Snipping Tool capture can depend on how you use the tool and your settings.
- To paste: after making a capture, switch to an app that accepts an image and use its Paste command or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V. This is the direct route when you want to insert the image into a document, message, or image editor.
- To keep a screenshot file: use Snipping Tool’s available save controls for the capture and choose a location and file name. Check the chosen location rather than assuming a universal folder or automatic save behavior.
- To share or annotate: open the capture in an app suited to that task. A clipboard image is convenient for immediate pasting; a saved image file is easier to attach, organize, or reuse later.
If nothing seems to happen after a capture, first try pasting into an image-capable app. A capture can be available on the clipboard even if no file or editor window has appeared. If you need a file, use the save controls rather than relying on the clipboard alone.

On a Mac: select a portion with Shift-Command-4
For a selected portion on Mac, press Shift-Command-4, then drag across the area you want. Apple documents this as the selected-portion screenshot shortcut in its Mac screenshot instructions. To use the broader screenshot controls instead, press Shift-Command-5. Those controls include a Clipboard option, so you can choose a clipboard-oriented workflow rather than assuming every capture has the same destination.

If a capture is unavailable in a particular app, that limitation may be imposed by the app rather than a problem with the shortcut. The Mac key combination is an alternative for Mac users; it does not change what Print Screen does on Windows.
Troubleshooting a region capture
The whole screen was captured instead of a section
You likely pressed PrtScn by itself or used a full-screen mode. Start again with Windows + Shift + S, then choose Rectangle or Freeform and select the desired area. PrtScn alone is documented as a full-screen clipboard snapshot.

The shortcut does not work on a keyboard without a PrtScn key
Use Windows + Shift + S for the region overlay. For devices without a PrtScn key, Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an option. Keyboard layouts and hardware differ, so use the combination supported by your device rather than assuming one Print Screen key arrangement.
I cannot find the screenshot after taking it
Check whether you expected a clipboard image or a saved file. Try pasting into an app first; for a file, use the screenshot tool’s save controls and note the location you select. The exact destination is not the same in every tool or configuration.

Apple says some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. Try the selected-portion shortcut if appropriate, but an app restriction may prevent capturing its window through the normal screenshot controls.

The shortcut captures a selection from the displayed screen. It does not by itself turn an off-screen portion of a page into a full-page webpage capture.
Does Shift-Command-4 work on Windows?
No. Shift-Command-4 is the Mac selected-portion shortcut; Windows uses Windows logo key + Shift + S for a region snip.
