What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Direct answer: scroll the page through every viewport before taking the full-page capture. A full-page flag controls how much document is stitched into the image; it does not guarantee that viewport-triggered lazy-loading code has run. After scrolling, wait for requests and layout shifts to settle, then capture with Playwright, Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), or a browser’s full-page command.
Why “full page” can still contain blank images
Lazy loading commonly defers an image request until the image is near the visible viewport. A screenshot API can request a very tall layout without making each section visible first. Playwright documents fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page, while CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot offers captureBeyondViewport; neither description promises that every site’s intersection observers, custom scroll handlers, or deferred requests will fire automatically (Playwright Page API, CDP Page reference).
Google Search Central’s lazy-loading guidance ties loading to content becoming visible and notes that infinite scroll can append additional pages as the user scrolls (Google Search Central guidance). Treat scrolling and capture as separate operations.
The reliable scroll-then-capture workflow
- Open the target at the intended viewport. Set the same width, height, device scale, locale, and authentication state you need in the final image.
- Wait for initial content. Wait for a key selector or network idle, but do not assume network idle means all lazy images are loaded.
- Scroll in viewport-sized steps. Move by roughly one viewport height, pause briefly, and allow image requests, decoding, and scripts to complete.
- Handle dynamic growth. Re-measure document height after each step. Infinite-scroll pages may add content, so stop only at the required boundary or when a clear end condition is reached.
- Return to the top. This avoids a screenshot that starts partway down and lets top-of-page sticky elements settle before capture.
- Capture the full scrollable page. Use Playwright’s
fullPage: true, a CDP capture, or the browser’s full-page command. - Inspect the output. Look for blank image boxes, missing lower sections, layout shifts, repeated sticky headers, and content hidden inside nested scroll containers.
The pause duration is site-specific. A single fixed delay or one scroll pass is not a universal guarantee: custom intersection observers, background images, nested scrolling areas, and slow responses require adaptation.

Playwright implementation
Install Playwright and its browser, then run this Node.js script. Replace the URL and, if necessary, the readiness selector.
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/long-page', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 90000
});
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle').catch(() => {});
// Scroll until the page stops growing, with a safety limit.
let previousHeight = 0;
let stableRounds = 0;
for (let round = 0; round < 80 && stableRounds < 3; round++) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollBy(0, window.innerHeight));
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
const newHeight = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (newHeight === previousHeight && newHeight === height) stableRounds++;
else stableRounds = 0;
previousHeight = newHeight;
}
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, 0));
await page.waitForTimeout(300);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
For a known finite page, a loop based on the expected content boundary is safer than waiting for a generic “stable” height. For infinite scroll, record the stopping rule (for example, a “no more results” marker or a maximum item count) so a capture cannot run indefinitely.
Waiting for images explicitly
If image elements expose a stable selector, wait for them after scrolling. The browser’s complete flag indicates that an image finished loading or failed; inspect naturalWidth to distinguish a usable bitmap.

This check does not cover CSS background images, canvas drawing, images inside a nested scroller, or a site that intentionally leaves some images broken.
Chrome DevTools Protocol option
CDP is useful when you already control a Chromium instance directly. First perform the same scroll-and-wait routine through Runtime.evaluate or your automation library. Then call Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport where supported by your protocol version. That option concerns capture extent; it does not replace scrolling that triggers lazy loading. Consult the rolling Page protocol reference for the exact fields supported by your browser.
Manual browser capture
- Open the page in a desktop browser at the desired width.
- Scroll steadily from top to bottom, pausing where images appear or new content loads.
- For infinite scroll, stop at the required item or at the site’s end marker.
- Return to the top and invoke the browser’s full-page screenshot command from its developer tools or capture UI.
- Open the saved image and check the bottom, image-heavy sections, and any sticky navigation.
Manual capture is often the fastest diagnostic: if an image never appears while visible, the issue is page loading or access—not the stitching command.

Common failure modes and fixes
Blank lower-page images
Cause: the capture started before those images entered a viewport. Fix: scroll in smaller steps, increase the per-step wait, and verify image completion after the final pass.
Images appear briefly, then vanish
Cause: virtualization or a framework replaces off-screen nodes. Fix: capture at the required boundary, disable virtualization in a test build if possible, or capture sections separately and stitch only stable content.

Nested feed remains blank
Cause: the lazy loader listens to an inner element, not window. Fix: identify the scrollable container and scroll it directly, for example locator('.feed').evaluate(el => el.scrollTop = el.scrollHeight), then wait for its requests.
Sticky headers repeat across the result
Cause: the header is fixed while the tool stitches the page. Fix: hide the selector temporarily with a capture stylesheet, or use the tool’s element-hiding option; confirm that removing it does not change layout.
Requests fail only in automation
Cause: authentication, cookies, geolocation, user-agent checks, or bot protection. Fix: reproduce the required browser context (storage state, headers, cookies, timezone, and location) and log response status. A CAPTCHA or blocked request cannot be solved by increasing screenshot height.

Performance, reliability, and validation
- Use a bounded loop. Set maximum rounds and a timeout so an infinite feed cannot consume a worker forever.
- Prefer a meaningful readiness condition. A selector for the final card or an end marker is more reliable than an arbitrary global delay.
- Allow for layout shifts. Web fonts, responsive images, and advertisements can change document height after an apparently complete pass. Re-check height before capture.
- Keep capture settings deterministic. Fix viewport, device scale, timezone, locale, color scheme, and authentication state when comparing runs.
- Save diagnostics. Record the final document height, item count, failed image URLs, and the stopping reason alongside the screenshot.
- Inspect rather than assume. Full-page output is evidence of what the browser rendered, not proof that every source asset was requested or that hidden content exists.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, selector-based element shots, custom waits, device and viewport settings, and PDF output.
One request is enough for a full-page image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Choosing the right approach
| Situation | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Your tests already run in Playwright | Playwright scroll loop plus fullPage: true |
You still must trigger viewport loading yourself. |
| You drive Chromium through a protocol client | CDP scrolling plus Page.captureScreenshot |
captureBeyondViewport controls capture behavior, not every lazy-loader. |
| You need a quick one-off | Manual scroll, then browser full-page capture | Visually verify lower sections and nested feeds. |
| You need repeatable API or agent captures | ScreenshotNeo | Use its waits and full-page options, and read verdict/billing headers. |
FAQ
Does fullPage: true scroll the page?
It captures the full scrollable page, but the API description does not guarantee that site-specific lazy-loading handlers ran. Scroll explicitly when missing images matter.
How long should I pause between scroll steps?
There is no universal interval. Start with a short pause, measure whether images and document height change, and increase it for slow or script-heavy pages.
Can a screenshot prove that all lazy assets loaded?
No. It proves only what was rendered in that capture. Check image dimensions, failed requests, and the final output.
