Choose the Google surface you are researching
First decide whether you mean results inside Google News or news placements in Google Search. Search has Top stories and a News tab; Google News is a separate service. Label the surface in your notes and do not treat captures from them as interchangeable. Google News Initiative’s Search guidance explains the distinction and notes that Search placements can vary by query, device, location, and other context.

Run and record a repeatable search
- Choose a query. In Google News, search for a topic, place, or source. Use available controls to narrow results with an exact phrase, included or excluded terms, a date range, or a publisher when relevant. Record the exact query and every active filter. See Google News Help: Find what you want on Google News.
- Log the context. Record the capture date and time with timezone; Google surface; query and filters; language and region; device, browser, and viewport; and whether you were signed in. These details help interpret the image because Google describes results as varying with factors such as query, language, region, device, settings, and past activity. - Capture the relevant page state. Use your computer or phone’s built-in screenshot function. Include enough of the interface to identify the surface and relevant results; avoid editing headline text or changing result order.
- Preserve the original. Keep an unaltered copy. If you crop or annotate a version for a report, retain the original and label the edited version as a derivative.
- Repeat deliberately for comparisons. Keep the query and filters constant where possible. State which condition you changed—such as date, region, device, or sign-in status—and which you held fixed.
What to compare—and what a screenshot can establish
For a useful comparison, organize captures by the variables most likely to change what appears:
- Time: capture date and time, including timezone.
- Surface: Google News, Search Top stories, or Search’s News tab.
- Search setup: exact query and active filters.
- Locale and device: language, region, device, browser, and viewport.
- Personalization context: whether the account was signed in.
Describe only what the image shows in that recorded context and at that time. Because Google says news presentation can depend on these conditions and some areas are personalized, one screenshot cannot establish consistent visibility, a universal ranking, or what a different user saw. Google’s explanation of story selection and its Search guidance provide the relevant context.

Verify headline and date claims on the publisher’s page
A result screenshot preserves what the interface displayed; it does not by itself establish when an article was published or meaningfully updated. Open the publisher’s article and compare the visible headline and publication or update date with the page’s available structured data. Google recommends a clear visible date and time and accurate datePublished and dateModified values with the correct timezone. Its News publisher guidance also cautions against changing dates to make a story appear fresh without significant new information. If a result’s headline or date appears inconsistent with the article, note the discrepancy rather than assuming the result snippet is definitive. Google’s publisher guidance also discusses aligning the visible article heading with the page title, crawler access, and consistent mobile and desktop redirects; these checks can help investigate a presentation issue.

Use screenshots responsibly
Google’s Brand Resource Center says: “You don’t need to ask permission to use screenshots of the Google Search page and search results pages in print for educational or instructional purposes.” That statement is specifically about print educational or instructional use of Google Search screenshots. It is not blanket permission for every use of Google News imagery; Google also describes restrictions on certain promotional print formats and approval requirements for Google Search use in advertisements. It does not settle copyright or privacy questions in every jurisdiction. Check the Google Search Guidelines and consider the context in which you plan to publish a capture.

Should I include the browser chrome in a research screenshot?
Include it when it helps identify the capture context or reproduce the view; otherwise, keep the full unaltered original and make any cropped copy clearly identifiable as a derivative.
Can a Google News screenshot prove an article was updated?
No. Check the publisher page’s visible dates and available date metadata; a screenshot records what the results interface displayed at capture time.
