Say whether you want the 2D/3D editor viewport, a scene-camera render, an isolated node, or a frame from the running game. These are different operations, and the tool names, prerequisites, output limits, and whether the game must be running depend on the MCP project you installed.
What “Godot MCP” means
There is no single official MCP screenshot command shared by every Godot project. “Godot MCP” describes several addons and bridges. Before configuring an AI client, identify the implementation and follow its own supported Godot versions, editor edition, runtime dependencies, and capture tools.
| Integration | Godot and runtime requirements | Capture capabilities described by its documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Godot-MCP editor addon | Godot 4.3 or newer, the C#/.NET editor, .NET 8 SDK, plus com.IvanMurzak.ReflectorNet 5.4.1 and com.IvanMurzak.McpPlugin 8.6.0 in the project .csproj. The standard GDScript-only editor cannot compile it. |
Its Asset Library listing describes 42 built-in tools across 12 families, including editor operations and screenshots. |
| Godot MCP Toolkit | Godot 4.2–4.7 on desktop Windows, macOS, or Linux; Node.js 22 or newer for its bridge. | Install and enable the addon, run its setup wizard, and connect an MCP client from the project folder. The wizard writes .mcp.json; npx retrieves the companion bridge at first connection. |
| Godot-Open-MCP | A live editor bridge and a GPU are required for its documented capture paths. | Provides viewport, camera, and isolated-node rendering tools with documented image response limits. |
| satelliteoflove/godot-mcp | Use the requirements published by that project. | Its editor-observation tool can describe an editor viewport or running-game image; its screenshot_game action requires a running game. |
The table is a practical orientation, not a compatibility guarantee. Addons and listings change, so check the selected project’s current documentation before upgrading Godot or your MCP client.
Choose the image you actually want
Editor viewport
This is the active 2D or 3D workspace shown inside the Godot editor. In Godot-Open-MCP, the tool is named godot_open_mcp_screenshot_viewport. It captures what the active editor viewport displays, rather than launching the game.

Scene-camera render
A camera tool renders from a Camera2D or Camera3D in the edited scene. Use this when you need a composed game view instead of the editor chrome or the current pan and zoom.
Isolated node render
An isolated tool renders a Node3D alone. This is useful for checking a model, prop, or material without the rest of the scene, but it is not a gameplay screenshot.
Running-game frame
A runtime capture shows the game as the player sees it. Some integrations can observe a running game only after it has been launched; satelliteoflove/godot-mcp documents that its screenshot_game operation needs the game running. Other editor-observation tools may work without launching it.
Set up an MCP integration
Path A: Godot-MCP for the .NET editor
- Install Godot 4.3 or newer in the C#/.NET editor edition.
- Install the .NET 8 SDK.
- Add
com.IvanMurzak.ReflectorNetversion 5.4.1 andcom.IvanMurzak.McpPluginversion 8.6.0 to the project’s.csproj, as required by the Asset Library listing. - Install and enable the Godot-MCP addon, then complete the integration’s own MCP-client configuration.
- Open the project in the editor and keep the editor bridge available while your MCP client connects.
If your project uses only GDScript and the standard (non-.NET) editor, this particular addon cannot compile; choose a compatible integration instead of trying to force the dependencies into the wrong editor build.

Path B: Godot MCP Toolkit
- Use a desktop Godot release in the Toolkit’s stated 4.2 through 4.7 range on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Install and enable the Toolkit addon in the project.
- Run its setup wizard. It writes the project’s
.mcp.jsonconfiguration. - Install Node.js 22 or newer, because the bridge uses
npx. - Connect your MCP client from the project folder. On first connection,
npxfetches the companion bridge.
Do not copy the .NET, NuGet, or Godot 4.3 requirements from Godot-MCP onto Toolkit projects; those are separate setup paths.
Path C: another server or hosted bridge
For Godot-Open-MCP, satelliteoflove/godot-mcp, or another implementation, install the exact addon and bridge it documents, then verify which process owns the MCP connection. A hosted backend, local bridge, and editor plugin have different network and lifetime behavior. The important check is that the MCP client sees the server’s tools while the Godot project is open.
Request a screenshot reliably
Give the agent enough information to select the right tool and reproduce the state. Include:
- Target: editor viewport, scene camera, isolated node, or running game.
- Scene or project to open, and the node or camera name when applicable.
- Game state: level, menu, player position, or other condition that must be visible.
- Input and duration, if the state depends on interaction.
- Desired dimensions or framing, when the integration exposes those options.
- Whether the response should be returned as an image block or saved by a separate client step.
For example: “Open the Main scene, run the game, hold Right for two seconds, then capture the running-game frame after the player stops. Return the image.” The Toolkit listing publishes the shorter example, “Run the game, hold right for two seconds, and screenshot the result.” Treat it as a prompt pattern, not a universal command: your server may expose different tool names.

Inspect the MCP response
An MCP call may return an image/png content block plus a text metadata block rather than creating a PNG in your project directory. Godot-Open-MCP explicitly documents this response style and says its documented capture paths write no project files. Save the image from the client only if you need an artifact in version control or a report.
Godot-Open-MCP limits and failure signals
The following constraints apply to the Godot-Open-MCP implementation, not to MCP generally:
- Requested dimensions above 16,384 pixels are rejected.
- The longest encoded edge is clamped to 3,840 pixels while preserving aspect ratio.
- Encoded PNG output is limited to 8 MB.
- A live editor bridge and GPU are required for the documented capture tools.
- Headless or no-GPU capture can produce
render_unavailableorempty_image.
Requesting a huge viewport will therefore not produce a huge file, and a successful tool call should still be checked for an image block before you treat it as a usable screenshot.
Editor shortcut fallback
Godot’s built-in editor screenshot is independent of MCP. The Godot 4.2 shortcut documentation lists Ctrl+F12 on Windows/Linux and Cmd+F12 on macOS for Take Screenshot. That page warns it may be outdated, and shortcuts can be changed at Editor → Editor Settings → Shortcuts. This captures the editor feature; it does not call an MCP server or guarantee a running-game frame.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The MCP client shows no Godot screenshot tools
- Confirm the addon is enabled in the same project opened by the client.
- Check that the editor bridge or local companion process is running and that the client connected from the required project folder.
- For Toolkit, inspect the generated
.mcp.jsonand ensure Node.js 22+ is available tonpx. - For Godot-MCP, verify you opened the C#/.NET editor and installed the .NET 8 SDK and both required NuGet packages.
The request captures the wrong thing
State the target explicitly. “Screenshot the game” is ambiguous between the editor viewport and runtime. Ask for the named camera for a camera render, a node path for an isolated render, or a running-game action after launch.
The runtime screenshot fails because the game is not running
Launch the project first, wait until the requested scene and state are visible, then call the runtime tool. If your integration only offers editor observation, use its documented viewport action or select a different server that supports runtime capture.
The result is blank or unavailable
For Godot-Open-MCP, check that the editor bridge is live and a GPU-backed session is available. render_unavailable and empty_image indicate the documented rendering path could not produce an image; retrying the prompt alone will not add a GPU.
The image is smaller than requested or rejected
Stay at or below 16,384 requested pixels in each dimension. If the encoded result’s longest edge is 3,840 pixels, that is the documented clamp. Reduce the requested size or accept the aspect-ratio-preserving output; also keep the encoded PNG under 8 MB.

Nothing was written to disk
That can be normal. MCP responses are content blocks, and Godot-Open-MCP says its capture paths do not write project files. Export or save the returned image in your MCP client when a file is required.

- Keep the editor open and the bridge connected for a batch of captures instead of reconnecting for every frame.
- Use a named scene, camera, and deterministic game state. Include input duration and a wait condition in each request.
- Capture the smallest useful viewport. It reduces transfer time and avoids the implementation’s pixel and PNG ceilings.
- Separate editor screenshots from runtime evidence in filenames or metadata; they answer different review questions.
- Do not assume one integration’s limits, tool names, or output persistence apply to another. Record the server name and version alongside automated captures.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a web page containing your Godot build, documentation, or a results dashboard—not a frame rendered by the Godot editor—you can use ScreenshotNeo. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be disabled individually. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the full option list. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also exposes an MCP server for AI agents such as Claude and Cursor, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Its 63 options include full-page lazy-image capture, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can MCP capture a Godot screenshot without starting the game?
Sometimes. Editor-viewport and some observation tools can work with the game stopped, while a runtime action such as satelliteoflove/godot-mcp’s screenshot_game requires a running game.
Does an MCP screenshot automatically become a PNG in my Godot project?
Not necessarily. Godot-Open-MCP documents an MCP image content block and metadata response, with no project file written by its capture paths.
Why does the Godot editor hotkey not appear to use MCP?
The Ctrl+F12/Cmd+F12 Take Screenshot shortcut is a separate built-in editor feature, configurable under Editor → Editor Settings → Shortcuts.
