For console footage, the dependable setup is a compatible external capture card between the console and a recording computer: console HDMI out to the card, card HDMI passthrough to the display, and the card’s USB connection to the computer. Configure your recording application, make a short test, confirm picture, game audio and synchronization, then record only the takes you need. PC gameplay may be recorded without a separate capture card, but the correct software and settings depend on your computer and are not established here.
Resolve publication rights before you record. Capcom’s official FAQ says gameplay videos and streams may be posted when creators comply with the current Capcom Video Guidelines. That conditional permission does not establish that a particular fan film, soundtrack use or commercial release is approved.

Start with the rights and release plan
A technically perfect recording can still be unusable if your planned publication falls outside the applicable policy. Read the current Capcom Video Guidelines linked from Capcom Town’s FAQ before production. Check the policy version, your territory, the platform where you will publish, monetization rules and whether an edited fan-film format is covered. The FAQ’s wording is conditional: gameplay may be posted or streamed only while complying with those guidelines.
The exact boundary for a specific fan film is not established by the FAQ excerpt alone. In particular, do not treat the ability to capture gameplay as permission to use the game’s soundtrack, other third-party material, or a commercial distribution. Clear music and other rights separately. Capcom’s event notice also says Capcom is not responsible for third-party content, which is a reminder that rights in music, performers, fonts, stock footage and other additions can sit outside Capcom’s intellectual property.

Keep event rules separate from ordinary production
Capcom published a notice on December 26, 2025, for a Resident Evil Showcase watch party scheduled for January 16, 2026. That named activation required YouTube-only participation, an 18-plus age gate, specified framing and overlays, retention of an archive, no edited repost of the mirror stream and restrictions on monetizing access. Those conditions belonged to that event. They are not universal requirements for every gameplay recording or fan film. If you participate in a future activation, follow that activation’s notice in addition to the general Video Guidelines.
Choose the source platform
Console capture
For PlayStation or Xbox footage recorded on a computer, an external game capture card is the clearest physical workflow. The console sends video to the capture device; the device sends a preview or recording feed to the computer and can pass a display signal onward. Confirm that the console’s HDMI output, the capture card, the computer connection and the monitor or television form a compatible chain.
PC capture
A separate card is optional when the game runs on the same computer that records it. A software-based workflow may be sufficient, but the appropriate application, operating-system support, performance overhead and settings depend on your machine. No particular PC recording application or configuration has been established here, so test your intended software rather than assuming that a console workflow translates directly.

Do not choose a capture device from a category label alone. Read capture and passthrough specifications as separate capabilities and compare them with the exact console and display you will use.

| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters for a fan film |
|---|---|---|
| Capture format | Resolution and frame rate the computer can actually record | Defines the master footage available for editing and delivery |
| Passthrough format | Resolution and refresh rate sent to your display while you play | Determines whether monitoring remains smooth at your preferred display settings |
| HDR workflow | Whether HDR is captured at the chosen resolution and frame rate, and whether HDR-to-SDR conversion is available | Prevents a mismatch between a high-dynamic-range game image and an SDR edit |
| Console and display compatibility | The actual console generation, HDMI path, display resolution and refresh-rate requirements | A signal can fail even when the capture device appears suitable in general |
| Computer connection | Interface bandwidth, operating-system compatibility and current recording-app support | Controls whether the computer receives a stable video feed |
| Availability | Whether the model is still sold and supported | Discontinued hardware may be harder to replace or troubleshoot |
What the HD60 X listing tells you
Elgato’s current product page describes the HD60 X for capturing PlayStation 5 or Xbox gameplay, lists capture and passthrough formats, and marks the HD60 X as discontinued. The same page points readers toward 4K S as an alternative and lists it for current console examples. Availability and specifications can change, so check the current device page before buying. Do not make the discontinued HD60 X your default purchase recommendation simply because it is familiar.
The important lesson is the distinction between what a device records and what it passes through. A card may pass a format to your display that it cannot capture at the same format. Read both columns of the specification sheet and select settings that your entire chain supports.
Storage is an accessory, not a fixed requirement
Long, high-quality recordings consume substantial disk space. An external SSD can make it easier to retain camera-ready source files and move them into an editing system, but no minimum capacity or particular model is established here. Treat storage as a workflow choice based on the length, resolution and number of takes you plan to keep.

- Connect the console’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card’s HDMI output to the display you will play on, if you want passthrough.
- Connect the capture card to the recording computer using its supported computer interface.
- Turn on the console, capture device, display and computer, then open your recording application.
- Select the capture device as the video source and select the appropriate audio source offered by that device.
These are connection steps, not a claim that one unlisted application or operating-system combination has been tested. Use the device’s current documentation for port names, drivers and application support. If you are recording PC gameplay, begin with the game and recording software on the same computer and decide whether an additional device is actually needed.
Configure and test before a long session
A short rehearsal catches most failures before you spend hours replaying a scene. Make the test under the same display mode, audio routing and microphone arrangement you will use for the final takes.
- Set the video source. Add the capture device in your recording application and select a format supported by both the device and the console signal.
- Check the preview. Confirm that the game image appears without a black screen, unexpected scaling or intermittent signal loss.
- Check game audio. Listen through the recording application or a monitoring path and verify that the game soundtrack and effects are present at a sensible level.
- Add narration only if needed. If you use a microphone, record a short spoken sample and check that it is assigned to the intended track.
- Check synchronization. Clap, press a menu button or perform another visible-and-audible action, then review the test file to ensure the sound matches the image.
- Check storage. Confirm that the destination drive has room for the session and that the application can create a file there.
- Review the file. Play the saved test from beginning to end. A live preview can look correct while the recorded file has missing audio, dropped frames or an incorrect source.
Keep the original test and final files until the edit is locked. Re-recording a one-time gameplay moment may not be practical, and an untouched source gives you options when you correct a cut or audio decision.

Plan the scenes, not an entire playthrough
Break the script into short, repeatable gameplay moments: establishing movement, an interaction, a combat beat, a reaction shot and any clean background plate you need. Record handles before and after the action so an editor can make a cut without starting on the exact frame of an input. If a moment is difficult to reproduce, make several takes while the scene state is available.

Keep takes identifiable
Use a simple naming pattern that records the scene, take and whether the file is a clean plate or a version with narration. Preserve the camera-ready originals separately from edited exports. This avoids confusing a compressed review copy with the source you need for a final grade or a replacement shot.
Separate game sound from added sound where possible
Capture the game audio consistently, then add original narration, foley or music in the edit only when your rights plan permits it. Do not assume that recording an in-game track grants permission to redistribute it. If your production requires a recognizable song or other third-party element, obtain the relevant permission or replace it with material you can legally use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Edit for a fan-film presentation
Import the original captures into your editing project and organize them by scene and take. Use the cleanest take for continuity, then trim loading screens, accidental menu navigation and unwanted pauses. Keep the game’s aspect ratio and frame rate consistent through the timeline unless a deliberate creative conversion is part of the plan.

Keep a high-quality master and make a separate upload encode if the platform requires one.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Black screen or no signal
- Verify that the console output is connected to the capture input and that the display is connected to the passthrough output, if used.
- Confirm that the console’s active resolution and refresh rate are supported by the capture device and the display chain.
- Power-cycle the console, capture device and display, then reopen the recording application.
- Test a simpler video mode to isolate whether a resolution, refresh-rate or HDR combination is responsible.
Picture appears on the display but not in the recording
- Check that the recording application has the capture device selected as its source rather than a different camera or screen source.
- Compare the device’s capture specification with the passthrough specification; successful passthrough does not prove that the same format can be recorded.
- Make a new short file after changing one setting at a time so you can identify the incompatible combination.
Audio is missing or delayed
- Confirm that the capture device’s audio source is enabled in the recording application.
- Check whether microphone and game audio are assigned to separate tracks or mixed unintentionally.
- Use a visible-and-audible action in another short test to measure synchronization before recording more scenes.
Recording stops or files are incomplete
- Check free space on the destination drive and whether the application has permission to write there.
- Reduce the capture format temporarily to determine whether the computer or connection is being overloaded.
- Review the saved file, not just the live preview, after each troubleshooting change.
Upload only after a final policy check
Revisit the current Capcom Video Guidelines when the film is ready to publish. Confirm that the actual edit, platform, territory and monetization plan match the permission conditions you relied on. Platform rules can also change independently of Capcom’s policy, so check the upload service’s current requirements at the time of release.
The January 16, 2026 watch-party notice illustrates why event rules must not be generalized: its YouTube-only distribution, age gate, overlay and framing requirements, archive-retention rule, mirror-stream repost restriction and access-monetization limits applied to that named activation. They do not automatically govern your ordinary fan-film upload.
Resident Evil context for your production notes
Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal states that the series launched in 1996 and reports more than 100 million copies sold across the franchise. The sales figure is Capcom’s own cumulative claim, and the page does not state a publication year for that number. These facts explain the series’ broad audience, but they do not change the permission conditions for your footage.
