Choose the capture method your agent can use
A viewport screenshot shows only the currently visible area. Full-page mode captures the page’s full scrollable content. The three practical Playwright routes are a direct JavaScript API call, the MCP browser tool, and the command-line interface.

These are different integration surfaces, not benchmarked alternatives. Start with the one your agent already has configured.
Capture a full page with the Playwright Page API
After launching or connecting a Playwright browser and creating a page, navigate to the target URL and set fullPage: true:

Wait for the page state your task needs
Choose readiness based on the site and the task. A page may still be changing after navigation, for example because content is loaded dynamically. There is no universal delay established by the cited documentation, so do not treat an arbitrary fixed wait as a guarantee. If your task depends on a particular page state, wait for that state using your workflow’s available browser controls before capturing.
Capture through Playwright MCP
In a workflow running Playwright MCP, call browser_take_screenshot and set fullPage: true. The tool can optionally name an output file and documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output choices. Use the screenshot when the next step is visual inspection—such as checking layout, a chart, or a rendering bug. Playwright MCP’s documentation says screenshots are “for looking at, not for acting on” and recommends browser_snapshot when the agent needs references to interact with controls. If the agent needs page structure, text, or interaction targets, provide that accessible snapshot or other structural data alongside the image rather than asking the vision step to infer everything from pixels.
Capture from the Playwright CLI
Use the CLI screenshot command with --full-page for a command-line workflow. For example, once Playwright is installed and available in the environment, a capture can be run as:
npx playwright screenshot --full-page https://example.com page.pngThe CLI also documents --hires for device-pixel output. That changes the coordinate space: the documentation warns that image pixels then no longer match the CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. Account for that distinction if a later agent step uses coordinates against the page. See the Playwright CLI documentation.

Use the image for the right downstream task
- Visual review: give the full-page image to a vision-capable step to inspect appearance and layout.
- Chart or canvas inspection: use pixels when the content’s visual rendering is what matters.
- Bug documentation: attach the image to show the rendered page state.
- Reading or interaction: include an accessibility snapshot or structural references when the agent must extract text, find controls, or operate the page.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
Check that the capture call uses fullPage: true (or the CLI’s --full-page) and that the agent invoked the screenshot tool rather than saving an ordinary viewport image.
The image shows an incomplete page state
Navigation may have completed before the content your task requires appeared. Wait for the relevant site state using the browser controls available in your workflow, then capture again; a fixed delay is not a universal readiness condition.

The agent cannot click a control based on the screenshot
A screenshot provides pixels, not the documented interaction references. Request a Playwright MCP browser_snapshot or supply other structural references for the interaction step.
Mouse coordinates miss after a high-resolution CLI capture
With --hires, the screenshot uses device pixels while mouse commands use CSS-pixel coordinates. Do not treat image pixel positions as matching mouse coordinates; account for the differing scales in your workflow.
When to use the lower-level Chrome protocol
The Chrome DevTools Protocol includes Page.captureScreenshot, but a complete parameter recipe is not established here. Because protocol details can vary with the browser version, check the current protocol schema for the target browser before building a full-page capture around it: Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain.
Playwright and protocol documentation can change. Recheck the relevant official documentation for the version in your environment when maintaining an agent workflow.
