Capture a full-page screenshot in Chrome
Chrome distinguishes a screenshot of the visible viewport from a full-size screenshot of the page. The full-size command includes content outside the current viewport; the neighboring screenshot command captures only what is visible. Google Chrome for Developers documents these controls in its device-mode guide (accessed October 3, 2026; no specific Chrome version is stated there).

Open the mockup or rendered page in Chrome at the URL you want reviewed. Wait until the page is in the intended review state.

Open DevTools. If the review requires a particular viewport or device, open the device toolbar and set the dimensions and, if needed, device-pixel ratio.

In the device toolbar, open More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Do not choose Capture screenshot if the review needs content below the fold; that command captures only the current viewport.

Inspect the resulting image before sharing it. Check that it reaches the intended end of the page, uses the intended width, and is readable at the size reviewers will view it.

Attach context such as the page or variant name, viewport dimensions, and capture date so reviewers can identify what they are seeing.

In a review script, make that setup repeatable and wait for the content your team needs to inspect rather than relying on a capture taken too early.
Use visual baselines for before-and-after reviews
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can create a reference image and compare later captures against it. Rendering may vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment when consistency matters. The Playwright visual-comparison guide also describes filtering volatile content with a stylesheet to make captures more deterministic.
Changing content, animation, late-loading assets, or different rendering conditions can create image differences that are not design changes. For a meaningful comparison, record the browser and device settings and control content that changes between runs.
Use the CLI when a command-line capture fits your workflow
Playwright’s CLI documents full-page capture with screenshot --full-page. Its --hires option produces a high-resolution image using device pixels. The documentation warns that those pixel coordinates no longer align with CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands; retain the scale information if reviewers need to refer to image coordinates. A full-page capture is a tall raster image. Check its readability in the review tool; pair it with viewport crops when reviewers need to inspect fine detail.

A single full-page image does not demonstrate responsive behavior. If the review covers more than one layout, capture the relevant viewport widths separately. Chrome device mode lets you set dimensions, and Playwright supports configurable screenshots.

Keep comparison conditions steady. Use the same environment as the baseline and filter volatile content where appropriate rather than treating every pixel difference as a design regression.

Pair the image with text or accessibility inspection when reviewers need to assess wording, page structure, or accessible names. A screenshot alone cannot establish those things.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image shows only what was on screen
In Chrome, the likely issue is choosing Capture screenshot instead of Capture a full size screenshot. Use the full-size option in the device toolbar’s More options menu. In Playwright, set fullPage: true in JavaScript or full_page=True in Python.

The page is cut off or an image is missing
Check that the page reached the intended state before capture and inspect the saved image for the intended end and loaded assets. For automation, wait for the content needed for review before taking the screenshot; the API example alone does not decide when a dynamic mockup is ready.
Two captures differ even though the design did not
Check for changing or animated content, late-loading assets, and differences in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode. Use the same baseline and comparison environment, and consider filtering volatile page regions as described in Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance.
Coordinates do not match the screenshot
If you used Playwright CLI high-resolution mode, the image uses device pixels while mouse commands use CSS-pixel coordinates. Do not treat the two coordinate systems as interchangeable; keep the scale information with the capture.
