For reliable visual comparisons, capture the same page state in the same browser and operating-system environment, with a fixed viewport, scale, and capture scope. In Playwright, use toHaveScreenshot() for a screenshot assertion that waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparing with the baseline. A screenshot records how a page looks; use browser rendering diagnostics and performance traces to investigate when and why it repaints, shifts, or drops frames.
What makes website screenshots consistent?
A screenshot is the output of a rendering environment, not just a URL. Playwright identifies host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as sources of variation. Fonts and browser-platform rendering can also make snapshots differ. Its guidance is to run tests in the same environment where the baseline was generated: Playwright visual comparisons.
Define and record the comparison target: URL, application state, viewport width and height, browser project, operating system or container image, and whether the capture is a viewport, full page, or element. If cross-browser or cross-platform coverage is required, treat each browser/platform combination as its own project with its own baseline rather than treating its rendering differences as noise.
Set up a repeatable Playwright screenshot
In a Playwright Test project, set the viewport, navigate to the page, wait for the application state you need, and assert against a named screenshot. Replace the example readiness condition with a reliable signal for your application; there is no universal fixed delay that guarantees a page is ready.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures a stable page state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('example.png', {
animations: 'disabled',
caret: 'hide',
scale: 'css',
});
});
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested recipe for every site. The readiness condition should represent the content or component whose appearance matters. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() retries until two consecutive page screenshots match, then compares the last capture with the expected image: screenshot assertion options.
Keep baseline and follow-up environments aligned
Run baseline creation and later comparisons in the same CI image, browser version, and headless configuration where practical. Avoid comparing a local baseline from a different OS or browser setup unless cross-environment variation is what you intend to test. For deliberate platform coverage, keep separate baselines per configured project.

Wait for application state, not an arbitrary pause
Wait for a meaningful condition, such as the relevant component becoming visible and populated or a loading indicator disappearing. An arbitrary timeout can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. The right readiness signal is application-specific; select one that means the screenshot target is actually ready.
Control motion and volatile page content
Animations, blinking carets, clocks, rotating promotions, and other changing content can make otherwise identical captures differ. Decide explicitly whether each changing region is part of what the test should verify.

- Disable animation when motion is not under test. Playwright’s screenshot APIs support
animations: 'disabled'. Finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for capture, then restored. Screenshot assertions default to disabled animations. - Hide a blinking caret. The page screenshot option defaults to hiding the caret; set
caret: 'hide'explicitly in an assertion to make the policy visible in the test. - Mask or alter only genuinely volatile regions. A screenshot stylesheet can hide or modify dynamic elements; use it for content such as a changing clock only when that content is outside the test’s purpose. Masking means that region is no longer being checked, so document the choice in the test and avoid masking layout, text, or rendering behavior you want to catch.
See Playwright’s page screenshot options and visual comparison guidance for the current options and behavior.
Choose capture scope and pixel scale
Keep the capture type consistent between the baseline and each comparison. Choose the smallest scope that answers the debugging question, unless off-screen content is part of the issue.

Playwright’s screenshot scale option controls output pixel dimensions. 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; 'device' produces one image pixel per device pixel and is the page.screenshot() default. On a high-DPI device, device scale can produce a larger image. Select deliberately and keep it fixed for comparable output. Details are in the page screenshot API.
Compare screenshots and review baseline changes
Playwright’s visual comparison workflow creates reference screenshots on an initial run and compares later runs against them. When a legitimate design change requires new references, update them deliberately with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Do not update snapshots automatically just to clear a failure. First review whether the visual difference is intended; otherwise a real regression can become the new accepted baseline. Playwright also supports configurable pixel-difference thresholds and screenshot styles. A looser threshold can reduce sensitivity to small noise, but may also let small genuine regressions pass, so use it only with an explicit tolerance in mind. See Playwright’s visual comparison guide.
Use rendering diagnostics to investigate performance
A still screenshot can show what looks wrong, but cannot establish when a visual change occurred or what caused it. Capture a performance trace or use Chrome DevTools Rendering tools alongside screenshots to investigate repainting, layout instability, and frame delivery. These tools support diagnosis; by themselves they do not prove a root cause, and comparisons still depend on capture conditions, emulation, and workload.
Inspect repainting, layout shifts, and frames
- Paint flashing: highlights repainted regions in green. Repeated flashing can help identify areas being repainted during an interaction or animation.
- Layout-shift regions: briefly highlights shifted regions in purple after a refresh.
- Frame rendering stats: show an FPS estimate and distinguish successfully rendered, partially presented, and dropped frames.
- Other rendering diagnostics: DevTools also exposes painting events, layer borders, and scrolling-performance information.
Chrome’s Rendering performance reference describes these options. The page lists Core Web Vitals guidance of LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS of 0.1 or less; that documentation was last updated April 13, 2022, so consult current Web Vitals guidance before relying on those thresholds.
Common causes of screenshot differences
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Text, spacing, or antialiasing differs across machines | Different OS, fonts, browser version, settings, hardware, or headless mode | Use the baseline environment for comparison, or maintain separate platform-specific baselines. |
| Only animated or promotional regions differ | Capture occurred at different animation frames or content states | Disable nonessential animation or locally mask/alter volatile content; do not hide regions the test is meant to verify. |
| Screenshot is intermittently incomplete | Capture ran before the relevant application state was ready | Wait for a specific content or component readiness condition rather than choosing a generic delay. |
| Image dimensions or pixel diffs change after moving to a high-DPI setup | Device-pixel scale differs from CSS-pixel scale | Set scale explicitly and use the same value for baseline and comparison. |
| Full-page result differs from a viewport capture | Capture scope changed, or below-the-fold content is relevant | Keep viewport, full-page, or element scope consistent; choose full-page when off-screen layout is under investigation. |
| A visual assertion fails after a design update | Either an intended change or a genuine regression | Review the diff before updating the reference with npx playwright test --update-snapshots. |
