Build the report from three distinct evidence sources: contextualized captures of sampled search results, captures and notes about competitor pages, and your own site’s Google Search Console performance data. Keep each source labeled. A screenshot shows what appeared for one query under one set of conditions; it is not a universal or stable ranking snapshot.

What belongs in the report—and what each source can tell you

A useful competitor SEO report connects what you observed in search with the pages competing for attention and the performance of the site you manage. These are related but different kinds of evidence:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • SERP captures document the visible results for a particular query and search context at a particular time.
  • Competitor-page captures preserve the page as observed, so you can assess its structure, content format, calls to action, and alignment with the search result.
  • Google Search Console (GSC) reports performance for your own verified site in Google Search. It is not a competitor traffic report. Its Performance report includes clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position, with data groupings such as queries, pages, countries, devices, search appearance, and dates. Google’s Performance report documentation explains the report and its metrics.

Treat the combined report as an evidence-based reporting method, not as a Google-prescribed template. Keep the original capture context and the dates for every data source visible so a colleague can understand what was observed and when.

Define a repeatable search sample

Start with a focused set of queries tied to the reporting site’s business goals. Existing GSC query data can help identify terms for the site you manage; it does not provide competitors’ search traffic. Keep branded and non-branded queries distinct, and decide in advance which markets and devices you intend to compare.

  • PLENTY OF ROOM: The ProNurse journal contains 100 Sheets, with enough space for 200 patient encounters per notebook. ProNurse has a durable, plastic cover and a sturdy back so you can write on the go.

For every sample, record the exact query, search engine, capture date and time with timezone, location, language, and device. If you compare markets or devices, label each combination separately rather than combining them into one apparent ranking. Google says search results can vary with time, location, language, device, context, and personalization; content changes and ranking-system updates can also affect what appears. See Google Search Help on why results differ and Google’s explanation of how Search organizes information.

Capture the SERP with its context

  1. Search the exact query using the engine, location, language, and device selected for the sample. Record the timestamp and timezone.
  2. Document the visible result page. Save a screenshot and, where useful, a structured row or CSV. Note visible organic results’ displayed titles, URLs, and positions in the capture. Identify ads and other search features separately from organic links.
  3. Record features and limitations. Note features such as local results or other visible modules, and whether the screenshot shows a partial or complete page. Preserve a filename or capture reference that links the image to its row of context.
  4. Repeat under matching conditions when tracking change. A comparison is more meaningful when query, market, language, device, and capture method are consistent. Describe placements as “observed in this capture,” not as an unqualified statement that a competitor ranks at a fixed position.

One practical context row can include: query; engine; date/time and timezone; location; language; device; visible SERP features; organic result title, URL, and sampled position; screenshot filename or URL; and notes about any collection differences. This gives readers a way to interpret the image without treating it as a permanent ranking record.

Capture competitor pages and note what is on them

For each competitor URL worth analyzing, save a full-page screenshot or PDF and record the canonical URL and capture time. A screenshot preserves visual evidence; extracted readable content can make later searching and comparison easier. Capture.page’s documentation describes screenshot, PDF, content, and metadata APIs, including full-page screenshots and device emulation.

For a repeatable review, note the visible title and H1, page type, major headings, content format, prominent calls to action, and whether the page fulfills the intent suggested by its sampled search result. Keep observations tied to the saved capture rather than assuming the page has remained unchanged.

A crawler can reduce manual work when you have many URLs or need recurring captures. Screaming Frog SEO Spider’s user guide documents screenshot exports, and its Search Console integration guide describes GSC integration. Confirm crawl settings and rendering mode for JavaScript-dependent pages, and ensure the viewport represents the comparison you intend to make; see the vendor’s configuration documentation.

Add your own Search Console performance data

In Google Search Console, open Performance and choose the relevant Search results report. The default date range is the past three months, but you can adjust the date range and metrics, then export report data. Include clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for the reporting period; use query and page dimensions when they answer the question at hand. Google documents the report’s controls and exports in its Performance report help.

Keep this export separate from sampled SERP observations. GSC’s average position is an aggregate measure: Google defines it as “the average position of the topmost result from your site.” A single observed search can show a different position. Google’s explanation of impressions, position, and clicks describes the metric.

GSC values may not match analytics products or other SEO tools. Google notes differences can arise from covered URLs, additional processing, crawl timing, and privacy protections, including omitted query data in some cases. Explain those limits rather than treating unlike datasets as interchangeable. See Performance report guidance.

Assemble and interpret the report

A concise combined report can be organized in this order:

  1. Executive finding and date range: state the main observation and the period covered by each source.
  2. Sample context: show the query, engine, time and timezone, location, language, device, and capture reference for each SERP sample.
  3. Observed results: include the SERP screenshot and a result URL list that distinguishes organic listings from ads and other features.
  4. Competitor pages: link or refer to each page capture and summarize its page type, structure, content coverage, format, calls to action, and match to the sampled query intent.
  5. Your site’s Search Console performance: include the relevant GSC export or a clearly labeled summary of clicks, impressions, CTR, average position, and chosen query/page dimensions.
  6. Comparison and next actions: connect intent and page type, observed SERP placement and features, competitor content structure and coverage, and changes since the previous comparable sample. Tie recommendations to the evidence and label uncertainty or capture limitations.

Do not turn an observation into a claim about cause without supporting evidence. For example, a competitor appearing above your result in one capture does not by itself explain why, and a difference in GSC position does not establish what every searcher saw.

Use URL Inspection for your site, not as a competitor archive

For a page on your own Search Console property, URL Inspection provides indexed information and a live test. The live test is useful for debugging how Google retrieves and renders the page, and it can show a screenshot. It is not a general tool for inspecting or archiving competitor URLs. For competitors, use a browser, crawler, or page-capture service instead. Google documents the tool in its URL Inspection help.

Optional link context and screenshot rights

If backlinks are relevant to the analysis, GSC’s Links report can export link data to CSV or Google Sheets. Treat it as a source of link context, not a complete census of all links on the web. See Google’s Links report documentation.

Google’s screenshot guidance says permission is not needed for screenshots of Google Search pages or results in print for educational or instructional purposes. That limited guidance should not be extended to every commercial reuse or to screenshots of third-party pages; check the applicable rights and terms for those uses. See Google’s permissions guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

For an automated page capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its options include full-page capture, device and viewport settings, and waiting for a selector or network idle. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, with each cleanup step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.

Troubleshooting common reporting problems

  • The screenshot and the reported ranking seem inconsistent: check the query, timestamp and timezone, location, language, device, personalization, and whether the position counts ads or other features. Label the screenshot as a sample and capture again under matching conditions if comparing time periods.
  • A competitor page does not resemble its SERP snippet: retain both captures and note the capture times. Search appearance and page contents can differ; do not assume the snippet is a complete or current rendering of the page.
  • A JavaScript page looks blank or incomplete: verify the crawler’s rendering configuration and viewport, then recapture after the page has had time to render. Use a page capture service or browser if the crawler setup cannot reproduce the intended view.
  • Search Console and another tool show different totals: check date range, dimensions, covered URLs, processing, crawl timing, and privacy-related omissions before comparing. Keep source labels and definitions alongside figures.
  • A report implies competitor traffic from GSC: remove that inference. GSC reports performance for the property you manage; sampled search captures show visible results, not competitor clicks or impressions.
