As of October 13, 2026, you cannot yet take screenshots of your own GTA 6 gameplay: PlayStation lists the game for PS5 and PS5 Pro with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. Until launch, you can browse Rockstar’s official promotional screenshots. After release, the documented PS5 system capture and sharing tools provide a way to save and send gameplay screenshots, but they do not confirm a GTA 6-specific photo mode or control scheme.
This guide separates what you can do now from what the console workflow can do once the game is playable. It also covers three different goals that are easy to confuse: downloading Rockstar’s existing artwork, sharing a PS5 capture through the console, and transferring an eligible capture to a phone or USB drive. The steps below explain only documented PS5 features; they should not be read as confirmation of in-game GTA VI tools.

What you can do before GTA 6 launches
Rockstar’s official GTA VI Screenshots media page listed 99 downloadable images when accessed on October 9, 2026. These are Rockstar-published promotional assets, not screenshots captured by players while playing the game. The page also identifies GTA VI media and artwork as downloadable and shareable.

Rockstar offers a ZIP download. This gives you existing promotional images; it does not let you capture a scene from your own game or establish that Rockstar offers an in-game screenshot-sharing service.
#1 Best Overall
Choose this route if you want an official image before release, or if you are looking for Rockstar-published artwork rather than a record of your own play. The gallery’s 99 images are a count of assets listed on that media page, not a promised number of in-game scenes or a player photo collection. Downloading Rockstar’s ZIP is also distinct from exporting a capture from a console: it does not require a PS5, a game save, or the PS5 Media Gallery workflow described below.
What is confirmed about platforms and timing
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as GTA VI platforms. PlayStation’s GTA VI page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro and gives November 19, 2026, as the scheduled release date; it also says the game will not be available for PS4. That date is a scheduled launch, not confirmation that the game is already playable.
The steps below are PlayStation 5 console-system instructions. They describe how to capture and share a screenshot using PS5 features; they are not evidence of a dedicated GTA 6 photo mode or game-specific screenshot controls. The official materials covered here do not establish the corresponding Xbox Series X|S button sequence, so those steps are not included.

One way to read the platform information is to keep the game’s release and the console’s capture tools separate. Rockstar and PlayStation establish the planned platforms and release timing. PlayStation’s support instructions establish how its system capture features work. Neither statement by itself confirms how GTA VI will implement an in-game camera, whether a photo mode will exist, or whether it will add its own way to post images.
Take a screenshot on PS5 after you can play
- While playing, press the Create button on the DualSense controller to open the Create menu.
- Choose Take Screenshot. Use the menu option rather than assuming a particular button press, hold, or shortcut: PS5 capture-button behavior can be customized in the console’s capture settings.
- Open the resulting capture from the Recently created card or later from Media Gallery.
This is the documented PS5 system workflow. Rockstar’s reviewed materials do not specify whether GTA 6 will add a photo mode, an in-game camera, or game-specific capture controls.
In practical terms, the Create menu is the confirmed starting point for a standard PS5 screenshot. If you have changed how the controller’s Create button behaves, do not assume a particular press or hold will produce the same result on every console. Opening the menu and choosing Take Screenshot avoids relying on a shortcut that may have been customized. The shortcut question is about PS5 settings, not a GTA VI setting.
Once the image is captured, the next step depends on what you want to do with it. Recently created is a way to get to a fresh capture, while Media Gallery is the documented place to revisit captures and use the USB-copy option. You do not need to select a final sharing method at the moment you take the image: capture first, then select it from either location for sharing or export.
These are console-system steps and therefore explain the capture mechanics, not the quality or contents of an image in GTA VI. The documented information does not promise a particular resolution, file format, image-editing feature, capture limit, or in-game camera angle. It also does not establish whether the game will pause, hide interface elements, or offer other photography tools when a system screenshot is taken. Those details should not be assumed until Rockstar documents them.

Share screenshots from the PS5
- Open the screenshot from Recently created or Media Gallery.
- Choose Share.
- Select a destination or recipient, then send the capture using the options shown on your console.
PlayStation’s sharing guide says you can share up to four screenshots in one sharing action. That is a PS5 platform limit described by PlayStation, not a GTA 6-specific feature. Available destinations and recipients depend on the options presented in the console interface.
If you have more than four screenshots to send, treat the four-image maximum as the limit for one sharing action and make another selection for the rest. The guide establishes the maximum per action, not a total lifetime limit on captures. It also does not mean every sharing destination accepts every type of recipient or provides the same experience. Choose the destination or recipient that appears on your console and follow its prompts.
This console-sharing route is useful when you want to send a capture directly using the PS5’s available sharing choices. If your aim is instead to put an image in your phone’s camera roll or share it through an app on the phone, use the PlayStation App workflow below when eligible captures and the feature are available. If you want a file moved off the console through removable storage, use USB export. Those are separate ways to move a capture; neither is a prerequisite for taking the screenshot.

PlayStation App can receive eligible PS5 game captures when the feature is supported in your country or region and the console and app are configured for it. The app route is useful if you want to save an image to your phone or share it from there.
- Link your PS5 with PlayStation App.
- Enable PS5 game captures in the app and turn on auto-upload in the console’s capture settings.
- Configure the PS5 to remain connected while in Rest Mode so eligible captures can upload.
- In the app, go to Library > Captures. Select an available capture to save it to your device or share it from the app.
PlayStation states that eligible captures uploaded through this feature remain available in the app for 14 days after capture. This is the stated app availability period, not a guarantee for every region or capture type. If the feature does not appear, check regional availability and whether auto-upload and the Rest Mode connection setting are enabled.
The setup has several parts, so checking only the phone app may not be enough. The console must be linked to PlayStation App, game captures must be enabled in the app, auto-upload must be switched on in the PS5 capture settings, and the console must be configured to remain connected while in Rest Mode. The guide describes the app route for eligible captures; it is not a promise that every capture will appear in every location or region.
When a capture is available, PlayStation’s documented path is Library > Captures. From there, you can save it to the phone or share it from the app. The 14-day period is important if you intend to use this route: it describes how long eligible uploaded captures remain available in the app after capture. Save a capture to your device or share it during that period if you want to keep or send it through the app; do not treat the app as permanent storage.
If a capture is missing, first check whether the feature is offered in your country or region and whether all the app, auto-upload, and Rest Mode connection settings are in place. The available information does not establish a universal workaround for regional ineligibility or an upload that has not completed. It also does not say that PlayStation App is the only way to share a capture, since the PS5 console itself offers a Share option.

Copy screenshots to a USB drive
A USB drive is an optional way to move PS5 captures off the console; it is not required to take a screenshot or use the console’s sharing options.
- Connect a USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Media Gallery and select the capture you want to export.
- Choose the option to copy the capture to the connected USB drive.
The PlayStation support guidance establishes that Media Gallery can copy captures to connected USB storage. It does not establish specific drive specifications in the materials cited here, so check the console’s on-screen prompts if the drive is not recognized.
This is the path to consider when you want a capture copied to removable storage rather than sent through a console sharing destination or handled through the phone app. Connect the drive and use Media Gallery’s copy option; the drive is not a special GTA VI accessory and is not required for the capture itself. No capacity, format, connector, or speed requirement is established here, so do not buy a drive based on an assumed specification. If the console does not recognize it, use the on-screen prompts and current PlayStation guidance to check compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no one best transfer method for everyone. Console sharing is the direct option when the destination or recipient is available on PS5. PlayStation App provides a phone route for eligible captures, subject to regional support, setup, and the 14-day availability period. USB is an optional export path from Media Gallery. Rockstar’s gallery is different from all three: it offers existing promotional images rather than a way to move your own gameplay capture.
Which screenshot route should you use?
| Goal | Documented route | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| View or download an image before launch | Rockstar’s GTA VI Screenshots page, including its ZIP download | These are Rockstar promotional assets, not player-made captures. |
| Take a gameplay screenshot on PS5 after launch | DualSense Create menu > Take Screenshot | This is the PS5 system workflow; GTA VI-specific controls and photo mode are not confirmed. |
| Send a capture from PS5 | Open it in Recently created or Media Gallery and choose Share | Up to four screenshots per sharing action; destinations depend on the console options. |
| Save or share an eligible capture on a phone | Enable auto-upload and use PlayStation App > Library > Captures | Feature availability varies by region; eligible app captures are available for 14 days. |

This comparison is limited to the confirmed PS5 paths and Rockstar’s official gallery. It is not a PS5-versus-Xbox feature comparison: the Xbox capture controls, storage details, app transfer, sharing limits, and USB workflow have not been established by the official material covered here. Likewise, the table does not compare photo modes, because Rockstar has not confirmed one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not confirmed for GTA 6
- Photo mode: Rockstar’s reviewed official materials do not confirm whether GTA 6 includes one.
- Game-specific screenshot controls: No GTA 6-specific capture shortcut or in-game menu has been documented in those materials. The Create-menu instructions are PS5 system guidance.
- Rockstar sharing: The materials do not establish whether Rockstar Social Club or another Rockstar service will support sharing player-made screenshots.
- Xbox capture steps: The exact Xbox Series X|S workflow is not established by the official material covered here. Use Xbox’s current official support guidance rather than relying on an unverified button sequence.
These distinctions matter because a console feature can be available without a game-specific mode being confirmed. A PS5 system screenshot workflow does not tell you whether GTA VI will include camera controls, special filters, a photo-mode interface, or an in-game upload option. Similarly, Rockstar making promotional artwork downloadable and shareable does not establish that player-made screenshots can be uploaded to Rockstar services.
For Xbox owners, the confirmed GTA VI platform list includes Xbox Series X|S, but that fact is not enough to supply an accurate button sequence or describe its storage and phone-transfer steps. Check current Xbox Support instructions for the console workflow rather than applying DualSense steps to an Xbox controller. For PS5 owners, the Create-menu instructions here are the verified system route, but exact behavior may depend on the PS5 capture settings.

PlayStation’s June 24, 2026, blog post quoted Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President of Marketing Mary Yee describing GTA VI as taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features and reiterating the November 19 launch date. That statement does not specify screenshot tools or photo mode.

The most useful expectation for launch is therefore modest: PS5 owners can use the console’s documented screenshot and transfer features, but game-specific camera tools and Rockstar sharing options should be treated as unknown unless Rockstar confirms them. Xbox owners should follow current Xbox guidance for system captures. Rockstar’s official media gallery is already a separate source for promotional imagery.
Frequently Asked Questions

The Bottom Line
As of October 13, 2026, GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, so you can download Rockstar’s promotional images now but cannot yet capture your own gameplay. Once you can play, PS5’s documented system route is Create > Take Screenshot, followed by Share, PlayStation App for eligible captures, or an optional USB copy from Media Gallery. Up to four screenshots can be shared per PS5 action; eligible app captures remain available for 14 days. Rockstar has not confirmed GTA VI photo mode or game-specific capture tools, and the Xbox capture steps remain unverified here.
