Press the Create button on your DualSense to open the PS5 Pro capture controls. From there you can take a screenshot, record up to one hour of new gameplay, or save the previous 15 seconds to one hour from the recent-gameplay buffer. Share directly from Recently created or Media Gallery, send eligible captures through PlayStation App, or copy files to optional USB storage when you need a local archive.
The important limits are different for each route: group sharing allows one video clip of up to three minutes or four screenshots, PlayStation App auto-upload accepts non-4K clips shorter than three minutes and keeps them for 14 days, and PS5 Pro’s 8K mode applies to screenshots only when the game, display and setting all support it.

Choose the right capture and sharing method
Your best workflow depends on whether you need speed, phone access, maximum still-image detail or a permanent copy. These are separate paths, not interchangeable versions of the same upload.

Prepare the PS5 Pro before you capture
Most capture actions work immediately, but checking the capture settings first prevents missing audio, an unsuitable format or an upload that does not meet PlayStation App eligibility.

Open the capture settings
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Captures and Broadcasts, then Captures.
- Review the Create button shortcuts, screenshot format, video format and resolution, and audio options.
The settings include whether microphone audio and voice-chat audio are included. HDR screenshots require a compatible display, and compatible displays also enable 4K recording. These display and format choices affect what can be shared through the app: PlayStation App auto-upload does not accept 4K video.
Decide whether you need audio
Turn microphone or party-audio capture on only when it serves the clip. If other people are speaking, Sony advises asking the voice-chat members whether it is all right to include their voices in your video clips. Muting or excluding party audio before recording is the simplest way to avoid an unintended conversation in a public upload.
Prepare Rest Mode for automatic phone uploads
For automatic uploads, the console must be linked with PlayStation App and able to remain online in Rest Mode. On the PS5 Pro, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet. Then enable captures in the app under Library > Captures, and confirm Auto-Upload is enabled on the console under Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures.

Capture a screenshot, a new recording or recent gameplay
The Create button is the control center for all three capture types. You do not need to leave the game or open Media Gallery first.
Take a screenshot of the current frame
- While the game is displaying the moment you want, press the Create button on the DualSense wireless controller.
- Select Take Screenshot.
- Return to the game. The image is saved to Media Gallery and can be shared immediately or edited later.
You can also configure a Create-button shortcut in the capture settings if you prefer a single press, double press or press-and-hold action instead of opening the menu each time. The exact shortcut behavior is shown in Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures.
Start recording from this point forward
- Press Create during gameplay.
- Select Start New Recording.
- Continue playing. The PS5 Pro can record a new session for up to one hour.
- When you are finished, press Create again and choose Stop Recording.
The finished video appears in Media Gallery. The one-hour figure is the console’s capture capability; it is not the same as the shorter video length accepted by PlayStation App auto-upload.

Save something that just happened
- Press Create after the event.
- Select Save Recent Gameplay.
- Choose the portion to preserve, from the last 15 seconds up to one hour.
This is useful for an unexpected win, a bug or a replay you did not anticipate. Because it relies on the recent-gameplay buffer, save it soon after the moment; continuing to play replaces older material as the buffer advances.
Understand blocked scenes
Some game scenes cannot be captured. A protected cutscene or other blocked segment may be omitted even when recording is active, so a saved video can jump over that section. This is controlled by the game and console capture protection rather than a fault with your controller or storage.
Capture 8K screenshots on PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro has a specific 8K screenshot option. It does not establish that ordinary gameplay clips are recorded in 8K; the documented feature is for still images.
Meet all three requirements
- You must be playing an 8K game on PS5 Pro.
- The console must be connected to a compatible 8K screen.
- 8K Resolution Screenshot must be enabled at Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures.
If any one of these conditions is missing, use the normal screenshot setting. An 8K-capable display alone does not turn a non-8K game into an 8K capture.
Plan for lower-resolution cloud copies
Sony states that screenshots uploaded to Cloud Media Gallery are uploaded at lower resolution. Keep the local capture, or export it to USB storage, when retaining the highest available still-image resolution matters. Treat a cloud or app copy as a convenient sharing version rather than the archival master.

Use Recently created
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select the Recently created card.
- Choose the screenshot or video clip.
- Select Share, choose the destination or recipient, and select Send.
This route is fastest immediately after a capture because the latest files are already grouped for you.
Use Media Gallery
- Open Media Gallery from the game home screen or the control center.
- Select a capture.
- Choose Share, select the destination or recipient, and choose Send.
Media Gallery also allows multiple selections. Sony’s group-sharing limits are one video clip at a time, no more than three minutes for that clip, or up to four screenshots. If a recording is longer than three minutes, trim a shareable segment first or send it by another route.
Edit before sending
For screenshots, Media Gallery can crop, rotate or add text. For videos, it can trim the clip and set a cover image. These edits create a cleaner message without moving the file to another device. For more extensive editing, Sony points to Share Factory Studio, which can add effects and music and save the exported result back to console storage and Media Gallery.
Share or download through PlayStation App
PlayStation App is the practical option when the recipient is on a phone or you want to post through another supported mobile app. Enable the feature before the moment you want to capture; files made before activation do not appear retroactively.
Enable captures in the app
- Open PlayStation App on the linked mobile device.
- Go to Library > Captures and enable captures if prompted.
- On the console, open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures and enable Auto-Upload.
- Leave the linked PS5 Pro in Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled when you want automatic transfers.
Know what auto-upload accepts
Automatic app uploads include gameplay videos shorter than three minutes that are not 4K, plus screenshots taken through the Create Menu or Create-button shortcuts. A one-hour console recording therefore needs trimming or a different transfer method before it can fit this rule. Not every capture is automatically uploaded, and enabling the feature does not backfill older files.
Download or forward a capture
- In PlayStation App, open Library > Captures.
- Select the uploaded screenshot or clip.
- Choose the option to download it to the mobile device, share it to a party through Game Base, or send it through another supported app.
Download wanted files while they are available. App captures are retained for 14 days, after which the app copy is no longer available through this feature. Sharing or downloading video over mobile data can consume substantial data, so use Wi-Fi when practical.

Upload manually when Auto-Upload misses a file
Open Media Gallery on the PS5 Pro, highlight the capture, open its Options menu and choose the upload option. Manual upload is useful for a file that was created before Auto-Upload finished, or for a capture that you want to choose deliberately. It does not remove the app’s three-minute, non-4K eligibility rule for video.

PlayStation Plus is not required for PlayStation App capture sharing. If a capture has already uploaded, deleting the console copy does not remove the uploaded app copy during its 14-day availability window. That temporary copy is not a substitute for downloading the file to your phone or exporting it to USB storage.
Copy captures to USB storage
USB export is the most dependable route for a separate local archive, editing on a computer or transferring a full-length recording that does not qualify for app auto-upload.
- Connect optional USB storage to the PS5 Pro.
- Open Media Gallery.
- Select the screenshot or video.
- Choose More, then Copy to USB storage device.
- Safely disconnect the drive after the copy completes.
A connected USB device appears as a tab in Media Gallery, where compatible images and videos on that device can be viewed. Sony’s cited instructions do not specify a required capacity, speed, format or model, so treat any USB flash drive as optional storage rather than assuming a particular specification is guaranteed.

Use a simple naming routine
Media Gallery is easier to search when you periodically copy important files and give them meaningful names on the destination device. Include the game, date and event in the filename, especially for tournament rounds or multi-session projects. The console’s capture workflow does not provide a separate long-term catalog, so your USB or phone library becomes the durable index.
Keep a master and a sharing copy
For a high-value moment, retain the original local capture and make a shorter or compressed version for messaging. The master protects quality when an app, party message or cloud service creates a lower-resolution copy. This is particularly important for PS5 Pro 8K screenshots, because Cloud Media Gallery uploads are lower resolution.

Trim only after checking the original
Review the full recording before trimming. A three-minute party-share segment may omit the setup or reaction that explains the play, while a longer USB copy can preserve context. Once you have verified the exported file, create the short version in Media Gallery or Share Factory Studio.
Troubleshooting common capture and sharing problems
The moment is missing from the recording
- Check whether the game was showing a protected scene; blocked scenes cannot be captured.
- For a missed event, use Save Recent Gameplay promptly and select the correct duration.
- Confirm that you stopped a new recording with Create > Stop Recording before looking for the file.
The clip is not appearing in PlayStation App
- Confirm captures are enabled in Library > Captures and Auto-Upload is enabled on the console.
- Verify that the PS5 Pro is linked to the same app account.
- Leave the console in Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled.
- Check the file against the eligibility rule: video must be non-4K and shorter than three minutes; screenshots must come from the Create Menu or a Create-button shortcut.
- Remember that captures made before activation do not appear retroactively.
A group message will not accept the whole video
Console group sharing allows one video clip at a time and caps that clip at three minutes. Trim the recording in Media Gallery, send a shorter segment, or copy the full file to USB storage instead.
The screenshot looks softer than expected
Cloud Media Gallery screenshots are uploaded at lower resolution. For an 8K still, verify the 8K game, compatible 8K display and 8K Resolution Screenshot setting, then preserve the local or USB copy rather than relying on the cloud version.

People can hear unintended voices
Open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures and review microphone and voice-chat inclusion before the next recording. If a clip already contains party audio, ask the participants before sharing it publicly, and use an edited version without that audio when appropriate.
Practical workflows for common situations
Instant party reaction
- Press Create and choose Save Recent Gameplay.
- Select the shortest useful segment, such as 15 to 60 seconds.
- Open Recently created, select the clip and share it to the party.
This avoids recording a full session and stays well inside the three-minute group-sharing limit.
Quick Recap
Long-form gameplay archive
- Start a new recording before the section you want to preserve.
- Stop it when finished, up to the one-hour console limit.
- Review and trim a separate highlight if you want to message it.
- Copy the complete file to USB storage for editing or long-term retention.
Phone sharing without a cable
- Enable PlayStation App captures and console Auto-Upload.
- Keep the linked PS5 Pro in Rest Mode with an internet connection available.
- Capture a non-4K clip shorter than three minutes or a supported screenshot.
- Download it from Library > Captures within 14 days.
Highest-detail PS5 Pro still
- Launch an 8K game on PS5 Pro.
- Connect a compatible 8K display.
- Enable 8K Resolution Screenshot.
- Use Create > Take Screenshot.
- Keep the local file or copy it to USB storage because Cloud Media Gallery reduces the uploaded resolution.
Limits worth remembering
- New recordings: up to one hour.

- PlayStation App auto-upload: non-4K videos shorter than three minutes and supported Create-menu screenshots.
- PlayStation App retention: 14 days unless you download the file.
