- Capture the whole screen, a window, or a selected region using your device’s screenshot controls.
- If the screenshot was saved rather than copied, use the capture tool’s copy control when available.
- Open the document, message, or editor and click or tap the place where the image should go.
- Paste: press Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, Command+V on Mac, or choose Paste on iPhone.
- If pasting is unavailable, save the image and use the destination app’s Insert, Attach, or image-upload control.
A destination app must support images in the specific field you are using. Some text fields accept only text, even when the surrounding app can display images.
How do I paste a screenshot into a document on Windows?
Copy the full screen with Print Screen
Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut guidance says Print Screen captures the whole screen and copies it to the clipboard. Open the document or message, click where the image belongs, and press Ctrl+V. The image is pasted from the clipboard; this step does not by itself save a separate screenshot file.

Copy or save a selected area with Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool and choose a capture mode suited to what you need, such as a selected region or window.
- Take the snip.
- Use Ctrl+C to copy it for immediate pasting, or Ctrl+S to save it as a file.
- For a clipboard capture, switch to the destination and press Ctrl+V. For a saved capture, use the destination’s image insertion or attachment control.
Microsoft also documents copying screen contents and pasting them into a Microsoft 365 application. The exact available capture modes can depend on the Windows version and device.
How do I copy a screenshot on a Mac?
Use macOS screenshot controls to capture the screen, then direct the screenshot to the clipboard. Apple’s Mac instructions describe Control-clicking the screenshot thumbnail and choosing “Save to Clipboard.” Open the destination and press Command+V.
If the screenshot went to a file instead, insert or attach that file from its saved location. Apple’s instructions note that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows; a blocked capture is not necessarily a shortcut problem. Menu wording and thumbnail behavior may differ by macOS release. Apple’s Australia support page calls out clipboard-thumbnail behavior for macOS 26 or later.
How do I capture and paste on a Chromebook?
- Press the Screenshot key, or open Screen Capture from Quick Settings. If your keyboard has no Screenshot key, Google lists Shift+Ctrl+Show windows as the shortcut.
- Choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture.
- Capture the screen or selected area.
- Switch to the destination and paste with Ctrl+V.
Google’s Chromebook guidance says screenshots and recordings are automatically copied to the clipboard. If the destination will not accept a pasted image, save or open the capture and use the app’s insert or attach control. A partial or window capture is the better choice when you do not want the entire display in the result.

How do I take and paste a screenshot on Android?
Android screenshot buttons and controls vary by manufacturer and device, so there is no single button combination that can be promised for every phone. Google Android Help explains taking a screenshot and directs users to the phone maker’s support site if the standard instructions do not work.
- Use the screenshot method shown for your Android model.
- After capture, use the controls shown on the phone to share or copy the image if offered.
- If there is no copy control, open the screenshot in the phone’s photo app and use the destination app’s image insertion or attachment option.
Do not assume that taking a screenshot on every Android device automatically puts it on the clipboard. Check the on-screen controls or the device manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model.
How do I take a screenshot and paste it on iPhone?
Capture the screen
- iPhone with Face ID: Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- iPhone with Touch ID: Depending on the model, press the side button and Home button together, or the top button and Home button together.
After capture, use the displayed tools to mark up, crop, share, or save the screenshot. Apple’s current iOS 26 instructions describe quick tools; its guidance also distinguishes the thumbnail behavior used on iOS 18 and earlier. Saved screenshots are available in Photos in the Screenshots collection.
Paste or insert the image
Use the available on-screen copy or share controls, then tap the destination and choose Paste if that field accepts images. If you saved the screenshot, open Photos and share it to the destination or use the destination app’s image picker. Button combinations and post-capture controls depend on the iPhone model and iOS version.

Where did my screenshot go?
- You copied it: It is on the clipboard, ready to paste, but clipboard contents are temporary and another copy action can replace them.
- You saved it: Find it in the folder or photo library selected by the device or screenshot tool. On iPhone, saved screenshots are in Photos under Screenshots.
- You cannot find it in the destination: The capture may have been copied rather than saved. Paste it into an image-capable field, or take another capture and explicitly save it.
On a Mac, if a capture was saved to the desktop or another location instead of copied, use the screenshot thumbnail’s menu and choose “Save to Clipboard” when that option is available.

Why won’t my screenshot paste?
The destination does not accept images in that field
Some apps and fields support text but not pasted images. Try an image-capable document or message area. Otherwise save the screenshot and use the app’s Insert, Attach, or image-upload control.
The screenshot was saved, not copied
A saved image is a file, not necessarily clipboard content. Reopen it in the capture tool and copy it if supported, or insert the file directly into the destination.
The capture shortcut did nothing
Check that you are using the combination for your device model and keyboard layout. On Android, consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions. On Mac, consider whether the app blocks screenshots; Apple notes that some apps do.

You captured the wrong area
Use a partial-region or window mode rather than full-screen capture. Chromebook capture controls offer full-screen, partial-screen, and window options; Windows Snipping Tool also provides capture modes.
Mac saved the image instead of copying it
Use the screenshot thumbnail menu and choose “Save to Clipboard,” then paste with Command+V. If the thumbnail is no longer available, use the saved file or take another screenshot and select the clipboard option.
iPhone-to-Mac paste does not work
Apple’s Universal Clipboard lets you copy an image on iPhone and paste it on another Apple device. Apple says the devices must use the same Apple Account and have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled; the copied content remains available only for a short time. Check that the devices are nearby, and check whether a VPN is blocking local networking.
