Choose the capture that matches what you need
macOS includes several screenshot paths. The best choice depends on how much of the screen you want and whether you need setup controls before pressing the shutter.

Take a screenshot with a keyboard shortcut
Capture the entire screen
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- Wait for the screenshot thumbnail to appear. Unless you selected another destination, the file is saved on the Desktop.
- Click the thumbnail if you want to mark it up immediately. Drag it into a document, folder, email, or note to place it there, or swipe it away to save without opening the editor.
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag across the region you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture.
- Press Esc before releasing if you change your mind.
- While dragging, hold Space to move the selection box without changing its dimensions.
Capture one window or menu
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Move over a window or open menu. macOS highlights the item that will be captured.
- Click to capture it.
- Hold Option as you click a window when you want to leave out its drop shadow.
Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple gives Apple TV as an example, so a failed capture does not necessarily indicate a keyboard or macOS problem.

Use the Screenshot panel for repeatable captures
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls at the bottom of the display. Select the icon for full screen, a window, or a selected portion, then capture.
Set options before capturing
Open Options in the panel to choose a save destination, add a timer, control whether the floating thumbnail appears, and decide whether the pointer is visible. These settings are useful when you need to stage a delayed capture or send every image to a project folder instead of the Desktop.
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Options may also offer SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF). The format choice depends on both your macOS version and hardware; it is not available on every Mac.
Open Markup and add callouts
Annotate from the floating thumbnail
- After the capture, click the floating thumbnail before it disappears.
- Choose Markup in the capture window.
- Use the available selection, drawing, shape, and text tools.
- For feedback screenshots, circles, rectangles, arrows, and short text labels usually communicate the target more clearly than freehand drawing.
- Save or close the window when finished.
The thumbnail is also a transfer point: drag it directly into a document, folder, email, or note. Swiping it away keeps the quick-save workflow.

If the thumbnail is gone
Open the saved image in Preview, then show the Markup toolbar. Preview can also create a capture from File > Take Screenshot. Choose the entire screen, a selected area, or a window; Preview opens the result ready for annotation. Apple describes this workflow in its Preview screenshot guide and its Preview annotation guide.
Preserve editability when annotations may change
Preview’s image markup is suitable for a one-time review, but Apple says that after you annotate an image file and save it, those annotations cannot be individually edited, moved, or deleted. If you expect a second review or need to reposition arrows later, convert the image to PDF first and annotate the PDF. Treat the PDF as the working copy and keep the original image unchanged.
A practical workflow for support, design, and documentation
- Choose scope: use full screen when surrounding context matters, a selection for one detail, or a window capture for a clean app view.
- Prepare the scene: close unrelated windows and open the menu or dialog you want shown.
- Set controls: use Shift-Command-5 and Options when you need a timer, alternate destination, pointer visibility, or a supported HDR/SDR choice.
- Capture: use the direct shortcut for speed or the panel for repeatable settings.
- Mark up promptly: click the thumbnail before it disappears, or open the saved file in Preview.
- Choose the right working format: save a final image for a fixed callout; use PDF when annotations may need revision.
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The shortcut does nothing
- Press and release the keys together rather than holding them indefinitely.
- Try Shift-Command-5. If the panel opens, the Screenshot service is available and the issue may be limited to the shortcut or keyboard.
- Check whether another utility has remapped the shortcut in System Settings.
The file is not on the Desktop
Open Shift-Command-5, choose Options, and inspect the selected destination. A previous change may have redirected captures to Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or another folder.
The selection is the wrong size
Press Esc and start again. While dragging, hold Space to reposition the selection without changing its size; release Space to resume resizing.

The window has an unwanted shadow
For a window capture, hold Option while clicking the highlighted window. This omits the shadow. If you need more exact framing, use a selected-area capture instead.
The thumbnail disappeared before you clicked it
Open the saved image in Preview and display the Markup toolbar. You can also recapture from Preview through File > Take Screenshot.
An app window cannot be captured
Some apps deliberately restrict screenshots. Apple identifies Apple TV as an example. Try capturing a permitted region or check whether the app provides its own export function; do not assume every protected window can be captured by macOS.
Annotations cannot be changed later
That is the expected limitation for saved image markup in Preview. Reopen the original and annotate again, or use a PDF working copy when future edits are likely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Mac offer the HDR screenshot option?
No. Apple describes SDR PNG and HDR HEIF choices as dependent on supported hardware running macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
Can I move a markup arrow after saving a PNG?
Not in Preview’s saved image workflow. Keep the original or use a PDF working copy when you expect revisions.
What is the fastest way to capture a single app window without its shadow?
Press Shift-Command-4, press Space, then hold Option while clicking the highlighted window.
