How to Capture an Entire Page in Firefox—with or Without an Extension

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can capture a full webpage in desktop Firefox without installing an extension: open the Screenshot tool, choose Save full page, then save or copy the image. Use an extension if you specifically need its export formats, editing tools, shortcut, or other workflow. This guide covers both approaches, Firefox Developer Tools, and how to assess extension permissions.

Capture a full page with Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool

For a straightforward full-page image, Firefox’s own tool is the simplest place to start. It can capture the entire page as well as a visible area, a selected region, or an automatically highlighted page element. The exact labels and layout can change between Firefox versions, so if your interface differs, check the current Firefox support guidance.

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Firefox.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. In the screenshot interface, choose Save full page.
  4. Save the resulting image, or use the copy option if you want to paste it elsewhere.

If you use screenshots frequently, you can add a Screenshot button to the toolbar. Open the Firefox menu, choose More Tools > Customize Toolbar…, then add the Screenshot button. The built-in route avoids installing an add-on just to get a full-page capture.

When the built-in tool is not enough

An extension may make sense if its current listing offers a format, editing feature, shortcut, or export workflow that you need. Extensions can capture pages differently from Firefox’s native tool, especially when a page is very long, has nested scroll areas, or changes content as it loads. A listing’s description is not a guarantee that every page will capture perfectly.

Use Firefox Developer Tools for a full-page screenshot

Firefox Developer Tools also provides full-page capture. This is a useful built-in alternative if you already work in the toolbox or the Screenshot interface is not the workflow you want.

  1. Open Developer Tools for the page.
  2. Open Developer Tools Settings.
  3. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  4. Click the screenshot icon that appears in the toolbox. Firefox saves the image to the browser’s Downloads directory.

Firefox’s developer documentation also describes command-line screenshot options, including a full-page option. Use the documentation for the Firefox version you have installed if you need command-line syntax, since the precise option details are not included here.

Choose a Firefox extension based on the job

The following are examples from Mozilla Add-ons listings, not independent recommendations or hands-on tests. Listings, compatibility, permissions, and features can change; check the current listing and the install prompt before adding an extension.

GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture

The listing describes launching a capture from the extension icon or with Alt+Shift+P. It says the extension scrolls through visible sections and assembles them, then opens the result in a new tab. Its listed exports include PNG, JPEG, and PDF; it also describes optional editing and splitting unusually large captures into separate images.

Read the permissions section rather than relying only on the short description. The listing says no extra permissions are requested in its description, while separately listing required access for named sites and optional download and browser-activity permissions. Inspect the actual Firefox install prompt and decide whether the requested access fits your needs. The listing reported version 8.8 and a last update of 2026-09-03 at the time it was checked; those details may have changed.

Full Page Screenshot – OpenScreenShot

This listing describes full-page, visible-area, and selected-region captures, editing, and PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF export. The developer says capture and editing take place locally without an account. The listing identifies clipboard and download permissions, requires desktop Firefox 140 or later, and says browser-protected pages cannot be captured. These are listing and developer statements, not an independent audit or security guarantee. The listing reported version 2.1.4 and a last update of 2026-09-22 when checked; confirm current details before installing.

Listing identifies clipboard and download permissions; developer says processing is local and no account is needed.

Choose according to the task, not just the name. A basic capture may not justify giving an extension broad site access. If editing or a particular file type matters, verify that it is available in the current listing and consider whether Firefox’s native route already meets your needs.

Check permissions and privacy before installing

Firefox extensions can request special capabilities through their manifest permissions, and browsers may inform users about requested privileges. Compare those permissions with the features you intend to use, then read the listing’s current data disclosures and the install prompt. A developer’s statement that an extension works locally, or a listing’s description of permissions, is not an independent security assessment.

Mozilla’s support guidance says Screenshot interaction telemetry does not collect the page URL or details of the image captured. Consult Mozilla’s current privacy controls and support information if you want to understand the browser’s telemetry settings; do not assume that statement describes a third-party add-on.

The WebExtensions API tabs.captureVisibleTab() captures the visible tab. It is not, by itself, a one-call full-page screenshot method. Full-page approaches can instead rely on browser tooling or scrolling and assembling page sections, which can behave differently on dynamic pages.

Common problems and what to try

  • “Take Screenshot” is missing from the context menu: right-click an empty part of the webpage, or use the keyboard shortcut for your operating system. You can also look for the Screenshot control through Firefox’s toolbar customization flow.
  • The Developer Tools screenshot icon is absent: open Developer Tools Settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons.
  • An extension cannot capture a page: check its current compatibility requirements and whether the page is browser-protected. OpenScreenShot’s listing, for example, specifies desktop Firefox 140 or later and says protected pages cannot be captured.
  • A long or dynamic page is incomplete or assembled oddly: scrolling-based capture can interact differently with lazy-loaded content, nested scroll areas, and changing page content. Try Firefox’s native Screenshot tool or Developer Tools capture, or compare the extension’s documented behavior before relying on its result.
  • Firefox asks for permissions you did not expect: cancel if you are unsure, review the listing’s full permissions section, and compare each request with the add-on’s stated features. Do not treat a brief description as a substitute for the install prompt.
  • The output format is wrong for your next step: check the current tool’s available export options before capturing. The two example extension listings describe different format sets; Firefox’s built-in route is suitable for saving or copying an image, not a substitute for every extension’s editing or PDF workflow.

If your goal is to capture a URL from code rather than use a Firefox add-on, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Which method should you use?

For one full-page image in Firefox, start with Save full page in the built-in Screenshot tool. Use Developer Tools if its toolbox workflow suits you. Install an extension when you have a specific need for its shortcut, editing, export format, or other listed capability—and review its current compatibility and permissions first. For automated URL capture in an application or AI-agent workflow, use an API or MCP server rather than treating an add-on as a browser automation interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Firefox extension capture a page behind a login?

Access depends on the page, the extension’s permissions, and any browser protections; the cited listings do not establish that either example works on every authenticated page. Check the add-on’s current documentation and test only where you are authorized to access the content.

Does full-page capture include content that appears only after scrolling?

It can vary by page and capture method. Lazy-loaded or changing content may not be present until it loads, so inspect the resulting image before using it as a complete record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I capture a browser-protected page with an add-on?

OpenScreenShot’s listing says browser-protected pages cannot be captured. Restrictions can differ by tool and page, so check the current listing and do not attempt to bypass access controls.
