Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To capture a website as it appears in a browser, use Perl to control Chrome or Chromium with WWW::Mechanize::Chrome. The browser renders the page, including JavaScript-driven changes, and the module can return the screenshot as PNG data. You need a compatible Chrome or Chromium installation; the example below saves the returned bytes to a PNG file.
Capture a rendered page with WWW::Mechanize::Chrome
A website screenshot is an image of rendered browser output, not a copy of the page’s HTML. A browser matters when JavaScript changes the page, when the layout depends on CSS, or when content appears only after the browser has loaded and rendered it. WWW::Mechanize::Chrome controls Chrome or Chromium through Chrome DevTools, navigates to a URL and exposes screenshot output.
The module’s documented minimal pattern is to create a browser controller, navigate with get, and call content_as_png. That method returns PNG data; Perl must write those bytes to a file in binary mode. This complete script follows that pattern and adds argument checks and file-write errors:
#!/usr/bin/env perl
use strict;
use warnings;
use WWW::Mechanize::Chrome;
my ($url, $output) = @ARGV;
die "Usage: perl screenshot.pl <url> <output.png>n"
unless defined $url && defined $output;
my $mech = WWW::Mechanize::Chrome->new(headless => 1);
$mech->get($url);
my $png = $mech->content_as_png();
defined $png && length $png
or die "No PNG data was returned for $urln";
open my $fh, '>:raw', $output
or die "Cannot open $output for writing: $!n";
print {$fh} $png
or die "Cannot write PNG data to $output: $!n";
close $fh
or die "Cannot close $output: $!n";
print "Saved screenshot to $outputn";
Save it as screenshot.pl and run perl screenshot.pl https://example.com page.png. Replace the URL and output filename with your own. The :raw file mode is important: PNG is binary data, so it should not be treated as text. The output extension should match the format requested from the module; this example calls content_as_png and writes a PNG.

The example uses the module’s documented headless constructor and screenshot call. Module APIs and browser compatibility can change, so consult the documentation for the version installed on your system before extending the script with additional lifecycle or capture options. The available WWW::Mechanize::Chrome manual is for Debian unstable and was surfaced as a 2026 publication or crawl; that is not a guarantee that every distribution ships the same module version.
Install and prepare the browser
This route has two separate prerequisites: the Perl distribution and a Chrome-compatible browser. The module documentation identifies Chrome or Chromium as the browser controlled by the module. Installing the Perl module alone does not supply that browser. Make sure the browser is installed and usable in the environment where the Perl process runs, including in a headless server or container.

- Perl module: install
WWW::Mechanize::Chromefrom its package source using the package-management method appropriate to your Perl environment. - Browser: install Chrome or Chromium compatible with the module version. Confirm the executable is available to the environment running the script.
- Output location: choose a writable path. A successful browser capture can still fail when Perl cannot create or write the output file.
The supplied module documentation does not establish one universal installation command, compatible browser-version range, or configuration path for every operating system. Check the package and browser documentation for your specific environment rather than copying a command intended for another Linux distribution or Perl setup.
Choose the screenshot scope before you capture
“A screenshot of the page” can mean different things. Playwright’s official screenshot API documentation distinguishes a normal screenshot, a full-page screenshot covering the scrollable page, and a screenshot of a selected element. Those are useful scope definitions, but they do not establish that WWW::Mechanize::Chrome exposes identical options or names. The documented Perl example here demonstrates PNG capture; confirm your installed module’s documentation before promising full-page or element-only output.

| Capture target | What it means | What to verify for this Perl setup |
|---|---|---|
| Browser view | The visible rendered page area at the time of capture. | The minimal content_as_png example provides PNG output. Check the installed module’s manual for viewport sizing and other capture controls. |
| Full page | The whole scrollable document, rather than only the currently visible area. | Do not assume that the minimal Perl call captures the entire document. Confirm the installed module version’s supported options. |
| Selected element | A particular page element, rather than the page as a whole. | The module documentation describes CSS selection support, but confirm the screenshot-specific method and syntax for your version before relying on an element capture. |
Capture scope affects the result: a viewport image may omit content below the fold, while a full-page image can be much taller. If a screenshot is for visual comparison, also control the page state—such as whether animations are running and whether a caret is visible. Playwright documents controls for those concerns, but they are browser-automation concepts, not confirmed WWW::Mechanize::Chrome options. Do not pass options from another automation library and assume the Perl module supports them.
Run Chrome visibly or headlessly
The example passes headless => 1, so the browser does not open a visible window. The module documentation describes visible operation as the default; omitting the headless setting can be useful when you want to inspect what the automation is doing. For an unattended script or a machine without a desktop session, headless execution avoids opening a browser window.

Use visible mode as a diagnostic aid when you need to observe navigation or page state, then use the documented headless setting for unattended captures. The exact display requirements and browser-startup behavior depend on the local installation; the available evidence does not establish a universal set of operating-system flags or a single browser version to use.
Chrome/Chromium and Firefox routes
The documented Chrome route is the clearer starting point for a new Perl script in this guide because it has a current manual listing and a concise documented capture pattern. That is not a claim that Chrome is universally superior: the available sources do not give a current feature-by-feature comparison or benchmark.

| Route | Documented browser and operation | Evidence and practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
WWW::Mechanize::Chrome |
Controls Chrome or Chromium; the documentation shows headless mode and PNG output. | The available manual is for Debian unstable and was surfaced as a 2026 publication or crawl. Check your installed version’s exact API and browser compatibility. |
WWW::Mechanize::Firefox |
The distribution includes a screenshot.pl example documenting PNG output and options for output file, target width, height and scale. |
The MetaCPAN listing for this example documentation indicates it dates from roughly 2018. Verify current module and browser compatibility before choosing it for a fresh setup. |
Choose based on the browser you can support, the freshness and applicability of the documentation available for your installed version, and whether that version supports the screenshot scope you need. The older Firefox example is evidence that a Firefox-based route exists, not proof that its documented setup works unchanged with current browser releases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make captures more repeatable
The three-line capture pattern is intentionally small. For repeatable output, make the conditions around it explicit in your own workflow: use the same browser environment, URL, viewport and page state when comparing images. A page that changes between visits can produce different screenshots even when the script is unchanged.
- Wait for the right state: a page can continue changing after navigation. The minimal example does not specify a wait condition, and the supplied Perl documentation does not establish a particular wait API. Consult your installed module’s manual if the target requires a selector, delay or other readiness condition.
- Keep scope consistent: compare viewport captures with viewport captures, or full-page captures with full-page captures, once you have verified how your module version supports the chosen scope.
- Control visual motion where possible: animations and blinking carets can make repeated images differ. Other browser automation documentation describes controls for these behaviors; use only controls confirmed by your Perl module’s documentation.
- Separate browser errors from file errors: navigation or capture may fail before any bytes are available, while file permissions can prevent saving after capture succeeds. The script reports failures from its output-file operations separately.
No throughput, memory, or timing figures are established for this method. Browser startup and rendering are part of the work, so measure your own URLs and environment if you need to estimate processing time or capacity; do not treat a result from one site as a general benchmark.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The module cannot start a browser: check that Chrome or Chromium is installed in the environment running Perl and that the installed module and browser are compatible. The module requires a Chrome-compatible browser; installing the Perl distribution by itself is insufficient.
- The script starts but does not save an image: confirm that the URL is passed as the first argument and a writable output path as the second. Check the reported file-open, write or close error; use a directory where the Perl process can create files.
- The output file is not a valid PNG: ensure the script calls
content_as_png, writes the returned bytes without text conversion, and uses binary file mode (:raw). Do not save the output as HTML or treat it as a text response. - The image is blank or shows an incomplete page: inspect the page state and whether content appears only after browser-side execution or later loading. The short example does not configure a custom readiness condition; consult the installed module documentation before adding a wait option.
- Only part of the page appears: check whether you requested a viewport or full-page image. The minimal example does not demonstrate full-page capture. Confirm the exact full-page API for your installed version instead of assuming a screenshot covers content outside the visible area.
- The capture differs between runs: page content, animation or caret state may vary. Keep the capture conditions consistent, and use only repeatability controls documented for the Perl module you are running.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered screenshot without installing and operating a browser through Perl, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns an image or PDF; here is the cURL form using the service’s documented endpoint and an example URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
