Capture a screenshot in Firefox
Firefox has a built-in screenshot tool for capturing a selected part of a webpage, an individual page element, the whole page or only the portion currently visible in the browser window. You do not need to install an extension for these basic captures.
- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. On a Mac, if a normal right-click does not open the context menu, use Control-click.
- Choose the area or page content to capture. You can drag to draw a region, click a highlighted element, or select Save full page or Save visible.
- Choose Download to save the capture, or Copy to place it on the clipboard.
If you prefer a keyboard shortcut, use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS. Mozilla’s current instructions and control names are in its Take screenshots in Firefox support article, last updated June 15, 2026.
Choose what part of the page to capture
The right capture mode depends on what you need to show. A small selection is useful for a chart or error message; a full-page capture preserves content that is outside the current viewport.

Select a custom region
Drag across the page to mark a rectangular area. Adjust the boundary markers if the selection needs refinement. This is the most direct choice when you need only a specific portion of a page rather than the browser’s full visible area.
Capture a highlighted page element
Move the pointer over the page and Firefox highlights elements that can be selected. Click the desired highlighted element to capture it. This can be more precise than drawing a region around an item when the page has distinct elements such as an image or a content block.
Capture the whole page or just what is visible
Choose Save full page to capture the complete webpage, including content beyond the current screen. Choose Save visible to capture the area currently shown in the browser window. If you are documenting a long page, the full-page option avoids making separate captures as you scroll; if you only need to show the current view, use the visible-area option.
Download the image or copy it
Select Download to save a PNG image in Firefox’s default download folder. Select Copy to put the screenshot on the clipboard, then paste it into an application that accepts images. Mozilla’s instructions also list Ctrl + S or Command + S for saving and Ctrl + C or Command + C for copying. Use the buttons in the screenshot interface if you are unsure which action is currently available.

Downloading is the straightforward option when you want an image file you can attach, upload or keep. Copying is convenient when you are moving the screenshot directly into another app and do not need to save a separate file first.
Add a Screenshot button to the Firefox toolbar
If you take screenshots often, you can put a dedicated Screenshot button on the toolbar rather than opening the page context menu each time:
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar….
- Drag the Screenshot button onto the toolbar and finish customizing.
The context-menu command and keyboard shortcut remain alternatives if you do not want to change the toolbar.
Use the keyboard to position the selection
Firefox’s screenshot interface supports moving the crosshair with the arrow keys. Ctrl or Command plus an arrow key moves it to a viewport edge. This can help when positioning a selection with the keyboard rather than the pointer. Mozilla notes a specific limitation: keyboard movement of the crosshair does not work on Wayland.

If the context menu is unavailable or difficult to use, try the keyboard shortcut or add the toolbar button using the steps above. On Wayland, do not rely on arrow-key crosshair movement; use the pointer to select the area instead.

“Take Screenshot” is not in the context menu
First try the platform’s keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS. You can also add the Screenshot button from Menu → More Tools → Customize Toolbar…. If right-clicking on a Mac does not open a menu, use Control-click.
The full-page capture is not what you need
Check whether you chose Save full page or Save visible. The first is for the entire webpage, including content outside the current view; the second captures only the portion currently visible. For a specific item, try selecting its highlighted page element or drawing a custom region.
Arrow keys do not move the crosshair
Mozilla documents that keyboard crosshair movement does not work on Wayland. Use the pointer to place the selection instead. On other setups, arrow keys move the crosshair, while Ctrl or Command plus an arrow moves it to a viewport edge.

You cannot find the downloaded file
Firefox saves the downloaded PNG in its default download folder. If you cannot locate it, check the browser’s configured download location rather than assuming it was saved to the desktop or the webpage’s folder.
Copy does not put an image where you expect
The Copy action places the capture on the clipboard; it does not create a downloaded file. Paste into an application that accepts images, or return to the screenshot interface and choose Download when you need a PNG file.
What Firefox says about screenshot privacy
Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot help article says the feature records interaction events, including use of Copy or Save full page, but does not collect the URL or details of the image captured. The article points to Firefox’s privacy notice and an opt-out section. This describes those stated categories; it should not be read as a broader guarantee about all Firefox data collection. Can Firefox automatically capture a webpage on a schedule?
Mozilla’s screenshot instructions describe a user-operated capture in the browser, not scheduled or unattended captures. For URL-based automation, use an API or another workflow designed for that purpose.
