To capture a webpage screenshot with Playwright MCP in Docker, connect an MCP-compatible client to the container, navigate to the page with browser_navigate, then call browser_take_screenshot. The tool can save the current viewport, a selected element, or the full page. Choose one documented Docker image and connection style; the Docker MCP Catalog and Microsoft repository show distinct examples that should not be mixed.
Choose how the Docker server connects to your MCP client
There are two useful patterns: a client-spawned process using stdio, or a long-lived HTTP server. The examples below come from different sources and use different image references, so keep each command paired with its corresponding setup.

The Docker MCP Catalog provides a stdio configuration example; Microsoft’s repository documents a separate Docker image path and HTTP deployment example. Use the image name, flags and transport from the same example rather than combining parts. The repository says its Docker implementation supports headless Chromium. Client-spawned stdio
Configure your MCP client to launch the catalog package with the command docker run -i --rm mcp/playwright. The exact configuration file and JSON or YAML syntax differ by client, so use that client’s current MCP setup instructions. The Docker MCP Catalog lists browser_navigate and screenshot tools for the package.

Long-lived HTTP server
Microsoft’s repository gives this Docker example for a headless Chromium server listening on port 8931:
docker run -i --rm -p 8931:8931 mcr.microsoft.com/playwright/mcp --headless --browser chromium --no-sandbox --port 8931 --host 0.0.0.0In the MCP client, configure the server URL as http://localhost:8931/mcp. Keep this image and its flags together as shown in the Microsoft repository. If the client runs on a different machine or inside another container, localhost refers to that client environment, not automatically to the Docker host; configure a reachable host address and network path for your setup.
Navigate to a page and capture it
- Start or configure the Docker server using one of the connection patterns above.
- Connect an MCP-compatible client. Examples named in the Playwright MCP guide include VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Desktop; follow the setup instructions for the client you use.
- Ask the client to open the target URL, or call
browser_navigatewith that URL. - Call
browser_take_screenshotand choose the output scope and options described below.
Tool names and parameters are part of the Playwright MCP interface documented at Screenshot tool documentation. If your client presents tools through natural-language prompts, request the same action and specify the desired capture options.

Choose viewport, element or full-page capture

Full-page capture and element targeting cannot be combined in one screenshot call. For a full-page image, omit the element target; for a specific element, omit fullPage: true. The screenshot tool reference also documents output formats and scaling: Playwright screenshot options.

Set format, filename and resolution
- Format: PNG, JPEG or WebP.
- Filename: Supply
filenameto choose the output name. Relative paths resolve against the workspace root. - Default output: If you omit
filename, the tool uses a timestamped default in its output directory. The documentation does not specify a single absolute output path for every client environment. - Image returned to the client: Omitting
filenamealso returns the image inline to the model unless image responses are suppressed. - Scale:
scale: "css"(the default) uses CSS pixels;scale: "device"uses device-pixel resolution.
Check the client workspace or its output display to locate a saved image; use an explicit filename when you need a predictable name. The available parameters are documented in the screenshot tool reference and the Microsoft repository.
Use screenshots for visual checks, snapshots for page structure
A screenshot records what the page looks like. It is useful for checking layout, inspecting charts or canvas content, and documenting a visual bug. It does not replace the accessibility snapshot when you need page structure, text, or controls to interact with. Playwright MCP works with the accessibility tree and provides references that the client can use in interaction calls; use those references to locate and operate controls. Security and operational considerations
- Do not treat Docker as a security boundary. Microsoft says Playwright MCP is not a security boundary. The server can browse pages requested by the connected client, so apply client permissions and trust controls appropriate to your environment.
- Be cautious with unsafe code execution. The official guide warns that
browser_run_code_unsafeexecutes arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is equivalent to remote code execution. Enable it only for trusted MCP clients. - Browser mode: The repository’s Docker implementation currently supports headless Chromium; do not assume the container example provides other browser engines.

The client cannot start the stdio server
Confirm Docker is installed and available to the user running the MCP client, and that the client configuration uses the catalog’s docker run -i --rm mcp/playwright command. Check the client’s own MCP configuration syntax and logs. Do not substitute the repository’s HTTP image or flags into the catalog’s stdio command.

The HTTP client cannot connect
Verify that the container was started with port 8931 published, the server was given --port 8931 --host 0.0.0.0, and the client URL ends in /mcp. If client and server are in different network environments, replace localhost with an address reachable from the client.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
First confirm that navigation reached the intended page, then capture again after the page has rendered. The screenshot tool captures the browser’s current state; the documented parameters do not by themselves guarantee that every site’s asynchronous content has finished loading. If the page is tall, set fullPage: true; if only one region is needed, target that element instead.
The tool rejects the capture options
Do not combine a target with fullPage: true. Confirm that the requested format is PNG, JPEG or WebP, and use scale: "css" or scale: "device".
You cannot find the output file
Use an explicit filename and look relative to the workspace root. With no filename, the tool chooses a timestamped default in its output directory; the image may also appear inline in the model response unless image responses are suppressed.
