Current Chrome cannot play Flash. Google’s Chrome Enterprise Help states that Flash content, including audio and video, no longer plays in any Chrome version as of 2021. A screenshot extension can capture content Chrome has rendered, but it cannot provide a Flash runtime or make an unsupported plugin work.
If you need a still image from legacy material, first find an HTML5 replacement, a downloadable original, or an authorized archive. Once the video is rendered by a supported player, Chrome’s visible-tab capture methods and screenshot extensions can capture the frame. If you need motion rather than one frame, use tab or screen recording instead.
Why the Flash screenshot workflow fails in current Chrome
A browser screenshot is a copy of pixels that the browser has already rendered. It is not a video decoder and it does not execute abandoned plugins. Because current Chrome does not play Flash, there is no live Flash frame for an extension to capture.
This is a playback limitation, not a missing extension permission. Installing another screenshot add-on, changing a capture format, or enabling an old setting will not restore Flash. Do not install old Flash binaries or weaken browser security to pursue this workflow.

Historical discussions and old extension pages can be misleading. Google’s 2017 transition announcement said Flash use had fallen from 80 percent of desktop Chrome users visiting a Flash site each day in 2014 to 17 percent in 2017, and said Flash would be removed toward the end of 2020. Those figures describe that period, not current usage or compatibility.
Identify the result you actually need

A screenshot is a still image. Chrome’s captureVisibleTab API is designed for the visible area of a tab. Chrome’s tabCapture and the web API getDisplayMedia() provide media streams for recording supported tab, window, or screen output; neither revives Flash.
Find a supported version of the video
- Look for an HTML5 player. Check the publisher’s current page, an updated article, or a replacement URL. A modern player normally uses the browser’s built-in video support rather than a Flash object.
- Check for a legitimate download. The site may offer an MP4, WebM, PDF, or other original file. Respect copyright, access controls, and the owner’s terms.
- Search an authorized archive or migration. For educational, government, or museum material, the organization may have migrated the content or provide an archival viewer.
- Confirm that Chrome is rendering it. If the page shows a blank rectangle, a plugin warning, or only an unavailable-object message, there is no video frame for a screenshot extension to capture.
Capture one frame with a Chrome extension
Once an HTML5 or otherwise supported player is visible, use this workflow:
- Open the replacement page in Chrome and wait for the player to finish loading.
- Resize the window so the desired player and surrounding page content are visible.
- Start playback, then pause at the target frame. If controls obscure the image, move the pointer away and wait for them to fade.
- Open your installed screenshot extension and choose its visible area, current viewport, or similarly named command. The exact label depends on the extension.
- Save as PNG for lossless text and interface detail, or JPEG/WebP when a smaller file is more important.
- Open the saved image and check that subtitles, controls, consent notices, and the video frame are all as intended.
Extensions such as CocoShot advertise full-page screenshots and screen recording, while GoFullPage advertises full-page capture and ongoing Chrome-related maintenance. These are examples of general-purpose tools; their store listings do not establish Flash compatibility, protected-video support, or successful capture of any particular site.

Build a minimal extension capture for supported content
If you are developing your own extension, the still-capture call is straightforward. It captures the visible tab after the user invokes the extension; it does not capture an unavailable Flash surface.

);Your manifest must request the permissions required by the APIs you use, and the capture should be triggered by a clear user action. Handle chrome.runtime.lastError; the call can fail when the tab is restricted, the user has not granted the needed permission, or the extension exceeds capture limits. API behavior and manifest details change, so consult the current Chrome for Developers references before shipping.
When you need a recording instead of a screenshot
getDisplayMedia()
A web page can request a media stream with getDisplayMedia(). Chrome presents a user-facing chooser for a tab, window, or screen. The user must select what to share and approve the request; a page cannot silently select a tab.

An extension can use chrome.tabCapture to obtain a stream from the current tab, normally after a user gesture and with the manifest permissions required by the current API version. This is appropriate for recording supported output. It cannot turn a missing Flash player into a stream.

Troubleshooting
The extension captures a blank or black video area
Confirm that Chrome itself displays a playing, supported video. A blocked, failed, or legacy plugin surface cannot be recovered by screenshot code. Test the publisher’s HTML5 replacement or download instead.

Dismiss the overlay before capture, use the extension’s hide-element controls if available, or use a capture service that removes known consent platforms and widgets.
Only part of the long page appears
Use full-page mode rather than visible-area mode. Wait for lazy images to load and check whether sticky headers or infinite scrolling require special handling.
The recording chooser does not appear
Call getDisplayMedia() from a user-initiated action, use a secure context, and verify that the browser has not blocked screen-sharing permissions. The chooser is intentionally user controlled.

Safety, rights, and reliability checks
- Capture only material you are allowed to copy or record.
- Do not bypass DRM, paywalls, authentication, or access controls.
- For repeatable captures, set a fixed viewport, device scale, timezone, and wait condition.
- Keep the paused frame and the source URL in your notes so the image’s context is auditable.
- Expect dynamic ads, personalized content, network failures, and consent flows to change the pixels between runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an older Chrome extension make Flash play again?
No. Extensions can capture rendered browser output, but current Chrome has no Flash playback runtime.

Can I screenshot a Flash video from an old archived page?
Only if the archive supplies a modern playable rendering or downloadable file. An archived Flash object alone will not play in current Chrome.
What is the difference between captureVisibleTab and tabCapture?
captureVisibleTab produces a still image of the visible tab; tabCapture provides a media stream intended for recording supported tab output.
