To screenshot a page without its cookie banner, have the agent inspect the page, find and activate the consent control that matches your task, verify the overlay is gone, and then capture the viewport, an element, or the full page. Treat banner interaction and screenshot capture as separate steps: a banner’s “dismiss” control does not automatically mean you should accept cookies.
How do I take a screenshot after dismissing a cookie banner?
Use this sequence with a browser automation agent: navigate, inspect, choose a consent action, confirm the page state, and capture. The exact interaction depends on the site; there is no universal cookie-banner selector.
- Open the target page. Navigate to the URL in the agent-controlled browser and wait for the page to load.
- Inspect the page structure. Request an accessibility or agent snapshot and identify the visible banner, its text, and the available controls. A snapshot helps locate controls; a screenshot is for visually inspecting what the page looks like. Playwright MCP explains the distinction.
- Choose the intended consent action. Decide whether the task calls for accepting, rejecting, or opening preferences. Use the actual control and label observed on the page. Do not treat “dismiss” as another word for “accept.”
- Activate the control. Click the observed control with a locator grounded in the page state.
- Verify the result. Wait for the banner or overlay to disappear, then inspect the page again if necessary. Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for and dismissing a predictable overlay as part of the normal flow rather than relying on
page.addLocatorHandler(). See the Page API guidance. - Capture the needed scope. Take a viewport screenshot for what is currently visible, an element screenshot for a specific component, or a full-page screenshot for the scrollable page. Playwright MCP documents these capture options at its screenshot tools page.
How to do it with a Playwright browser agent
In an agent workflow, use the browser tool or MCP client’s navigation, snapshot, locator, click, wait, and screenshot capabilities. The exact tool-call syntax varies by agent client and version, so this is the sequence rather than a supposedly universal command script:
- Navigate to the target URL.
- Take an accessibility or agent snapshot and read the banner’s visible text and controls.
- Generate or select a locator for the intended action using the observed label or structure.
- Click the control and wait for the banner to become hidden or detached.
- Take a fresh snapshot if the page state changed unexpectedly.
- Capture the viewport, target element, or full page.
The Playwright agent CLI capabilities document snapshots, locator generation, screenshots, dialogs, and cookie commands. Keep the consent choice explicit in your prompt or automation logic; the tooling can interact with controls but does not determine which choice is appropriate for your use case.

Finding the right cookie control
Cookie banners vary across websites, so selectors copied from another site can click the wrong control or find nothing. Browserless’s cookie-consent example illustrates trying selectors that need adapting to the target page. Prefer a locator based on the control label and structure the agent actually observed over an assumed generic selector.
- Accept: choose only when acceptance is intended for the task.
- Reject: use when the task calls for declining optional cookies and the site presents that choice.
- Preferences: open the preference interface when the task requires a specific configuration, then save it and verify the banner is gone.
If the banner appears inside an iframe, use a frame-aware locator rather than searching only the top-level page. Playwright supports locating elements within frames; see the Page API.
Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
- Viewport: captures the currently visible browser area. Use it when the screenshot should represent what a visitor sees without scrolling.
- Element: captures one selected element, useful for a specific chart, card, or section.
- Full page: captures the page’s scrollable content in one output. Use it when content below the fold matters.
For Playwright’s screenshot API examples covering viewport, full-page, buffers, and elements, see the Screenshots guide.
When the click fails or the page changes
- The locator matches nothing: take a new snapshot and locate the control from the current page state. The banner may have loaded late, changed its wording, or appeared in a frame.
- The click times out: confirm the control is visible and enabled, then refresh the snapshot and generate a current locator rather than repeatedly retrying a stale reference.
- The banner remains visible: check whether the click opened a preferences panel rather than dismissing the banner. Complete the intended action there, wait again, and verify the overlay has disappeared.
- The page changes after clicking: inspect the new state before acting again. A navigation, rerender, or changed dialog can invalidate earlier locators.
- The screenshot still includes an overlay: verify the overlay’s actual hidden or detached state before capturing; do not assume that a completed click means the banner is gone.
Playwright’s guidance for predictable overlays is to wait for and handle them explicitly. For frame interaction and screenshot details, consult the Page API.

Local browser or hosted browser?
A local browser automation setup gives you control over the browser environment and interaction flow. A hosted browser can be useful when you want to connect to managed browser infrastructure rather than operate it yourself; Browserless documents a hosted cookie-consent example. The cited documentation does not establish comparative prices, latency, reliability, or service-level performance, so assess those against your own workload before choosing.
