The shortcut depends on your operating system. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S for an area, window or full-screen capture; on macOS, use Command + Shift + 3 or Command + Shift + 4; on ChromeOS, press Ctrl + Show windows; and in GNOME Linux, press Print. The resulting image may be copied to the clipboard, opened for editing or saved as a file, depending on the method.
Choose the capture you need
Use a full-screen capture when the entire desktop or a complete error matters. Choose a window capture to show one application without unrelated tabs or notifications. Select a region for a dialog, chart or small interface detail. If a menu disappears as soon as you press a key, use a delayed capture. When movement or a sequence is the important evidence, use your system’s screen-recording option instead of a still image.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture an area, window or screen with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose a capture mode from the overlay: rectangular area, freeform area, window or full screen.
- For an area, drag over the content. For a window, select the window; for full screen, select the full-screen option.
- The capture opens in Snipping Tool. Use its annotation or editing controls, then choose the save command and a file location.
This is the most flexible Windows shortcut because it lets you decide what to include after the overlay appears. It also avoids exposing other open applications in a support ticket or document.
Copy the entire screen with Print Screen
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn) to copy the entire screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, a chat or another editor and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Save the pasted image from that application.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on applicable devices. Laptop layouts differ, so check the key legends and the Fn layer before assuming the shortcut is unavailable.
Capture a menu that closes too quickly
Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose a delay, and then select the capture mode. The countdown gives you time to open a context menu, hover state or tooltip before the image is taken.
Windows troubleshooting
- No image appears after Print Screen: it was copied to the clipboard rather than saved. Paste it into Paint or another editor.
- The wrong monitor is included: use Windows + Shift + S and select the desired display or region instead of relying on a full-screen clipboard capture.
- A menu vanishes: use Snipping Tool’s delay.
- The shortcut does nothing: try the Fn combination on a laptop, and verify that the Windows key is not disabled by a keyboard utility.
macOS
Save the entire screen
Press Command + Shift + 3. macOS saves a screenshot as a file using the Screenshot system’s normal destination and naming behavior.
Select a region
Press Command + Shift + 4, then drag across the area to capture. Release the pointer to take the shot. This is useful for a single control, part of a webpage or a cropped error message.

Open the Screenshot controls
Press Command + Shift + 5 on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. The Screenshot app provides on-screen controls for capturing the entire screen, a window or a selected portion. It also includes screen-recording choices and options such as a timer and destination.
Copy instead of saving
Hold Control with a screenshot shortcut when you need the result on the clipboard. You can then paste it into a message, document or image editor. The screenshot thumbnail menu also provides clipboard-related behavior after capture.
Some protected applications, including Apple TV, may block window screenshots. A black or missing image in that situation is an application restriction rather than a failed keyboard shortcut.
macOS troubleshooting
- You cannot find the file: open the Screenshot controls with Command + Shift + 5 and check the selected destination.
- You captured too much: use Command + Shift + 4, or choose the selected-portion mode in the Screenshot app.
- A protected video is blank: the application may prevent screenshots; do not assume changing the shortcut will bypass that protection.
- You wanted to paste, not save: add Control to the shortcut.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Full-screen capture
Press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the rectangle with two vertical lines, commonly found in the top row. ChromeOS presents the capture through its built-in capture and Gallery workflow.

Capture part of the screen
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, then select the area with your pointer. ChromeOS also offers window and screen choices from the capture interface.
Use the capture interface and recording
Open the screen-capture control from the shelf or quick settings when you prefer visible controls. It supports screenshots and screen recording. Google documents alternate key mappings for external Windows and Mac keyboards, and tablet devices can use the Power button or the Screen Capture control.
ChromeOS troubleshooting
- The Show windows key is missing: use the on-screen Screen Capture control or the documented mapping for your external keyboard.
- You need a video: choose recording in the same capture interface rather than taking repeated stills.
- You cannot locate the image: open the Gallery workflow and review the recent captures.
GNOME Linux
Use the Print Screen interface
Press Print to launch GNOME’s screenshot interface. GNOME 42 introduced an interactive overlay that lets you choose an area, window or full screen and switch between screenshots and recordings.
Classic GNOME shortcuts
- Alt + Print: capture the focused window.
- Shift + Print: use the full-screen or area capture behavior documented for GNOME.
Exact save-folder behavior can vary by distribution and desktop version. KDE, Cinnamon, Xfce and other Linux environments may use different programs and key bindings, so treat these shortcuts as GNOME-specific rather than universal Linux rules.

GNOME troubleshooting
- Nothing happens: confirm that your desktop is GNOME and that the Print key is recognized; another desktop environment may have different bindings.
- You captured the wrong window: focus the target application first, then use Alt + Print or the interactive overlay.
- You need a recording: choose the recording mode in the GNOME overlay.
Where screenshots go and how to share them
A clipboard-first capture is not a file until you paste and save it. Windows Print Screen explicitly uses the clipboard, while Snipping Tool opens the image for editing and saving. macOS shortcuts normally save files, but Control-assisted shortcuts copy to the clipboard. ChromeOS exposes captures through its built-in capture and Gallery workflow. GNOME saves through its screenshot interface, with the exact folder dependent on the distribution and version.
Before sharing, crop unrelated personal information, check that text is readable at the destination size and use a lossless format such as PNG for interface text. JPEG can be smaller but may blur small type. If a support team needs the whole context, send the full window; if it needs one error, a focused region is easier to understand.
Keyboard and accessibility considerations
Key labels vary: Print Screen may appear as PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn, and many laptops place it behind an Fn layer. A USB keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key can simplify Windows or GNOME shortcuts, but you do not need new hardware when your built-in shortcut works. On-screen capture controls are often easier than memorizing combinations, particularly on tablets, compact keyboards or alternative input devices.
