Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the capture method by what you need in the image: if the part of the webpage is visible on screen, use your operating system’s region-capture tool. If you need a webpage selection that extends below the visible area, use Firefox’s screenshot feature or Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot Tool. OS captures record visible pixels; browser captures can select page content beyond the current viewport.
Choose the right method
First decide whether the target is visible and whether you want webpage content only or everything shown on your screen. Those distinctions matter more than the size of the crop.
| What you need | Best fit | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A visible region, quickly | Windows Snipping Tool or macOS screenshot selection | The pixels displayed in the selected screen area, potentially including browser controls if they fall inside the selection. |
| A webpage region that may extend below the viewport | Firefox screenshot feature or Microsoft Edge Screenshot Tool | Webpage content selected in the browser; each also offers a full-page option. |
| A long page from a developer workflow | Firefox Developer Tools | A full-page screenshot, with technical options such as device-pixel ratio and delay. |
If you only need a visible crop, the operating-system tool is usually the simplest route. If the area is below the fold, use a browser tool rather than trying to select pixels that are not currently on screen.
Capture a visible region on Windows
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Choose the rectangular region capture mode.
- Select and drag over the part of the browser window you want in the screenshot.
- Review the captured image and save it using the tool’s save control.
This is a screen capture, not a webpage-aware crop. It records what is displayed inside the selection. If the browser toolbar, a tab strip, or part of another window is inside that rectangle, those pixels can appear in the result. Arrange the page and window before selecting the area.

If the target is below the fold
Scroll the target into view and take multiple crops if you need a few separate visible sections. If you need one continuous page image or a selection that reaches outside the current viewport, use a browser-native capture instead. A simple screen-region selection cannot include pixels that are not currently visible.
Capture a visible region on macOS
- Start the macOS screenshot selection.
- Drag the crosshair over the portion of the screen you want to capture.
- Release the selection to produce the screenshot, then save or use the resulting image.
As with Windows, this captures screen pixels rather than understanding the page structure. Keep the selection inside the webpage if you want to exclude browser chrome or other desktop content. Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows, so a capture can be unavailable or incomplete for particular app content.
When a screen selection is not enough
If the desired webpage area is outside the visible screen, first consider whether scrolling and capturing a different visible section will do. For a single capture that includes content below the fold, move to Firefox or Edge’s webpage capture feature instead.
Select webpage content in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox and invoke its screenshot feature.
- Choose the option to select a region.
- Drag over the content you want. Adjust the selection edges if necessary.
- Download the image when the selection is correct.
Firefox’s feature also offers a visible-page capture and a full-page capture. Use the region option when you want a particular portion, visible-page when the current view is enough, and full-page when you need the complete long page. Because this is browser-native capture, it can select webpage content rather than merely copying a rectangle of current screen pixels.

Exact controls can change between Firefox versions and devices. If the labels differ in your installation, look for the browser’s screenshot action and confirm the available capture choices in that version.
Capture an area or full page in Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage in Edge and open Screenshot Tool.
- Choose the selected-area option for a portion of the page, or the full-page option for the entire page.
- For an area capture, select the desired content and adjust the selection if the tool allows it.
- Save or copy the finished capture using the controls presented by your installed version.
Microsoft describes Edge’s tool as able to capture content beyond the screen as well as a selected area. That makes it a better fit than an OS crop when the page section is not all visible in the current viewport. Availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version, so the exact name or placement of the tool may differ.
Keep the screenshot clean and readable
- Decide the boundary before capturing. Include only the page content needed to explain the point. An OS capture may include desktop or browser chrome if it falls within the rectangle.
- Check whether the content is below the fold. A visible-screen crop cannot reach it without scrolling. A browser’s page-aware capture may.
- Inspect the result. Confirm that text, images, and the intended edges are present before sharing or using the image.
- Choose full-page only when it helps. A full-page image can be useful for preserving context, but a focused region is easier to read when the reader needs one specific component.
- Be mindful of sensitive information. Before distributing an image, check for visible account details, private messages, or other information that should not be shared.
Developer workflow: Firefox Developer Tools
For developers who need repeatable page captures, Firefox Developer Tools documents a full-page screenshot control and command-line options that include device-pixel ratio, delay, and filename. This is a more technical route than an ordinary crop and is useful when the whole rendered page must be captured with explicit capture parameters.
It is not the best choice for a one-off crop of visible content: use the OS selection for that. Nor should a full-page capture be confused with selecting a particular portion of the page. If you need a precise element, a browser region tool or an automated screenshot workflow that supports CSS selectors is more suitable.

Automate a webpage capture with ScreenshotNeo
For a developer workflow that needs a rendered page image rather than a manual screen crop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a page in PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its options include selecting an element by CSS selector. That is useful when you want an element-level capture, but it is not the same as dragging an arbitrary crop on your desktop. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a GET request with the page URL and your API key. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of the page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot includes browser controls or desktop content
You used a screen-region capture, which records the selected visible pixels. Reposition the browser window and make a tighter selection, or use a browser-native page capture if you want webpage content rather than a screen rectangle.

The screenshot feature or menu label is missing
Browser tools and their availability can vary by version, device, and (for Edge) market. Check the installed browser’s current menus and documentation; do not assume a shortcut or control from another version will be present.
A macOS app area appears blank or cannot be captured
Apple notes that some apps do not allow screenshots of their windows. Try capturing the webpage through a browser-native feature if the content is available there, or use a different capture method supported for that content.
The downloaded browser capture is not the intended size
Reopen the selection and adjust its edges before downloading. For a whole long page, use the full-page mode; for only what is currently displayed, use visible-page mode. Verify the saved image rather than assuming the selection matched the intended boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only one element on a webpage automatically?
ScreenshotNeo offers CSS-selector element capture for automated workflows; a manual screen selection is better when you need to choose an arbitrary visual rectangle.
Which method should I use if I do not know whether the content is visible?
Check the current viewport first. Use an operating-system region capture if it is visible; use a browser page capture if your selection must reach beyond it.
