Keep the account name, text, timestamps and connecting lines visible, and retain the original post URL when the image is being used as evidence.
What counts as the complete thread
X defines a thread as connected posts from one person. A thread with four or more posts may be shortened in the timeline and display Show this thread. Tap it before taking any screenshot. You can also open the first post to enter its thread-detail view, where connected posts are easier to inspect.
Scroll through the expanded conversation and pause whenever an image, video preview or quoted post is still loading. A screenshot records only what was visible at capture time; it does not preserve deleted posts, replies that were not loaded, or media hidden behind a collapsed control.
- Keep the author’s display name, handle and profile image where practical.
- Include the post text, timestamp and the visual line or spacing that shows how posts connect.
- Exclude unrelated timeline columns, advertisements and recommendations.
- Save a clean, uncropped original before adding highlights or annotations.
- For citations or disputes, save the URL of the first post alongside the image.
Recommended workflow
- Open the first post in the X app or at x.com.
- Select Show this thread, or tap the post to open the thread detail view.
- Scroll from the beginning to the end. Wait for lazy-loaded media, quoted posts and text to appear.
- Choose the instructions for your device below.
- Inspect the result for missing posts, clipped lines, unreadable text, usernames, timestamps and media.
- Retake at a larger display scale or split the thread into numbered sections if necessary.
- Crop or annotate a copy, not the preserved original.
iPhone and iPad
Standard screenshot
On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume up button together. On a Home-button model, press the side (or top) button and Home together. Tap the thumbnail to crop, mark up or share; the image is saved in Photos.

Try Full Page for one tall image
When the current screen exposes a supported scrollable document, the screenshot editor offers Full Page. Select it, adjust the crop, then save the PDF or image offered by iOS. Apple documents this flow primarily for scrollable pages such as a webpage in Safari. The X app may not expose Full Page, because availability depends on the app and capture context.
If Full Page does not appear, open the expanded thread in Safari and test the capture there. If Safari still offers no Full Page option, take several overlapping screenshots. Overlap each image by one or two lines so you can prove that no post was skipped when the files are later ordered.
Quality checks
- Use landscape orientation only if it makes the post column wider without shrinking text.
- Keep the browser address bar or another identifying context in at least one image when attribution matters.
- Check that videos are represented by the intended frame; a screenshot cannot preserve playback.
Android phones
Standard and scrolling capture
On Android, press Power + Volume Down. In the preview controls, tap Capture more, then drag the handles to include the rest of the expanded thread. Android’s scrolling screenshot workflow applies on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. The completed image can be edited and shared from Google Photos under Collections > On this device > Screenshots, or from your manufacturer’s Gallery app.
When Capture more is missing
The X app or the phone may not expose a compatible scrollable surface. Button names and placement also vary by manufacturer. In that case, capture consecutive sections with a small overlap, or open the thread in a browser and try again. Do not assume that a normal screenshot followed by a swipe has produced one continuous image; verify the saved file.

Windows
Snipping Tool method
- Open the expanded thread in your browser and position the post column so text is readable.
- Use Snipping Tool’s selected-area mode to surround the post column, excluding sidebars and unrelated timeline material.
- Save the snip, then scroll by less than one viewport and repeat.
- Name files in order, such as thread-01.png, thread-02.png and thread-03.png.
Snipping Tool is designed for screen or region captures, so a long thread generally becomes a sequence of images. Some browsers also expose a full-page screenshot command through developer tools or a page menu. Labels and output formats change, so inspect the resulting image at 100% zoom before relying on it.
Readable desktop captures
Increase the browser zoom or Windows display scale only enough to make text legible; excessive zoom creates more sections and increases the chance of an ordering mistake. Keep a consistent width and scroll increment for every capture.
Mac
Built-in shortcuts
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag a precise region around the post column.
- Shift-Command-5: open Screenshot controls for the full screen, a window or a selected portion.
Screenshots normally go to the desktop unless you changed the destination in Screenshot controls. Use a selected region for a clean thread record, then repeat down the page with a small overlap. A browser full-page feature can reduce the number of files when available, but check every section for lazy-loaded posts, clipped media and unexpected blank areas.
Choosing one image or a sequence

Use one tall image when the platform produces it without shrinking text beyond readability. Use a numbered sequence when the thread is exceptionally long, includes large media, or the app does not support scrolling capture. A sequence is preferable to a single image that is so tall that readers cannot read it.

Common failures and fixes
“Show this thread” is not visible
Open the first post itself rather than capturing the timeline card. The control may be replaced by the thread-detail view, or the account may have posted fewer connected posts than the truncation threshold.
Posts or images are missing
Scroll more slowly and wait for loading indicators to finish. Check your connection, then retake the affected section. A screenshot cannot recover content that failed to load.
Full Page or Capture more is unavailable
That option requires a supported scrollable surface. Try the thread in Safari or another browser, update the operating system where appropriate, or switch to overlapping captures.
Text is clipped or too small
Capture a narrower region around the post column, increase display scale modestly, and avoid compressing the final image through a messaging app. Review at 100% zoom before publishing.

The sequence is out of order
Use zero-padded filenames and a fixed overlap. Compare the repeated line or timestamp at each join, then sort by filename rather than file-creation time.
A screenshot shows private or sensitive material
Before sharing, inspect notifications, direct messages, account details and browser tabs at the edges. Blur only in a derivative copy and disclose material that was intentionally obscured.

Keep the first-post URL with the image because interface screenshots can be cropped, altered or become outdated. State whether replies, quoted posts, deleted posts or media were omitted. Do not present a cropped segment as the entire thread. If the screenshot is for reporting or a legal record, preserve the untouched originals, note the capture date and time, and avoid drawing conclusions from pixels that are not legible.

Can I screenshot a thread without notifying the author?
Taking a device screenshot does not create a public X post or reply. Sharing the image can still expose content, so follow the author’s privacy expectations and applicable rules.
Will a screenshot include replies?
Only replies and quoted posts that are visible in the captured view are included. The connected posts written by the thread author are separate from replies in the conversation.
Is a screenshot a permanent copy of an X post?
No. It preserves the pixels captured at one moment. Keep the original URL and capture time if readers need to verify the live post.
What file format should I use?
PNG is useful for crisp text and annotation; JPEG is smaller for ordinary sharing. Choose the format that keeps text readable after the destination service recompresses it.
