For a page protected by a normal website login, use Puppeteer to complete the authorized login flow, wait for a marker that proves the private page loaded, and then call page.screenshot(). For an existing authorized session, restore its cookies before navigating. Use page.authenticate() only when the server uses HTTP authentication; it does not fill in a website login form.
Capture the authenticated page, not just a successful navigation
A reliable capture has three stages: establish a valid session, navigate to the protected destination, and confirm that the expected authenticated content is present before saving the screenshot. A page load by itself does not prove login succeeded: the site may redirect to its login form, show an access-denied page, or return an HTTP error.

The example below is a runnable Puppeteer pattern, but the login URL, selectors, credentials, and private-page marker must match the site you are authorized to access. Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() as its screenshot operation and fullPage as the option for capturing beyond the viewport (Puppeteer screenshots guide; Page.screenshot() API).

}Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Set SITE_USERNAME and SITE_PASSWORD in the process environment rather than hard-coding them in a script. The example uses page.locator() for form controls; if a site’s controls require different interaction, use selectors and actions supported by that site’s page and your installed Puppeteer version.

Choose the authentication method the site actually uses

Use the normal login form for an application account
Navigate to the login page, fill its actual fields, submit, and wait for a selector that appears only after successful authentication. Then navigate to the protected URL and wait for a marker unique to its content. Do not treat disappearance of the login form or a redirect alone as proof that the intended page is ready.
Sites may require MFA, handle consent, or block automation. Puppeteer’s browser APIs do not provide a universal login recipe for those site-specific flows. Automate only accounts and content you are authorized to access, and follow the site’s access rules.
Restore an authorized cookie session
When reusing a legitimate session, set cookies through the current browser or browser-context cookie APIs before navigating to the protected page. Cookie scope, including domain and path, expiry, secure requirements, and the site’s own session checks can determine whether a cookie works. A restored cookie may already be expired or insufficient on its own, so still verify a private-page marker after navigation.
Treat session cookies as secrets: do not print them to logs, commit them to source control, or expose them in screenshots or shared artifacts. Anyone who obtains a usable session cookie may be able to access the associated account.

Use HTTP authentication only for an HTTP-auth challenge
For a server that requests HTTP authentication, call page.authenticate() before navigation:

});Pass null to disable authentication if needed. Because Puppeteer turns on request interception behind the scenes for this method, it can affect performance. A typical site login form instead requires browser interaction with the form.
Verify the destination before taking the screenshot
Check the final URL, the main navigation response when available, and a page-specific selector. The URL and status help identify redirects and server errors; the selector helps establish that the application rendered the content you meant to capture.

In headless shell, valid HTTP error responses such as 404 or 500 do not necessarily make navigation throw, so inspect the response status (Page.goto() API). A selector check is still needed: a 200 response can contain a login page or an application-level error.

Choose screenshot dimensions, format, and target
Capture the full page or just the viewport
fullPage defaults to false, which captures the viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full page height:

For lazy-loaded content, wait for the relevant content or image to appear before capture rather than assuming navigation completion means it has rendered.
Capture one element or a clipped region
Use ElementHandle.screenshot() for an element-only capture. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view when needed, but the call fails if the element has been detached from the DOM (ElementHandle.screenshot() API).

Select an output format and quality
With a path, Puppeteer can infer the image type from the filename extension. You can also specify a supported type; quality applies only to formats that support it, such as JPEG, and does not apply to PNG. If you omit path, the screenshot is returned as image data instead of being written to that file (Page.screenshot() API).

The site redirected to login
Check page.url() after navigation and wait for a selector unique to the protected page. If the final URL is the login route or the private marker never appears, the session may be missing, expired, or rejected, or the login flow may not have completed.
Navigation completed but the application content is not ready
Navigation events describe document loading milestones, not every client-side render or delayed widget. Add an explicit wait for the content marker or other application-specific ready state. Screenshot operations coordinate with certain page and context operations, but they do not guarantee that the site’s application has finished rendering (Page.screenshot() API).

Check the response from page.goto() and fail the capture when its status is 400 or higher. In headless shell, a valid HTTP error status may not throw during navigation; an image file can therefore be produced even though the requested resource was an error page (Page.goto() API).

An element screenshot reports a detached element
The page may have rerendered and replaced the target after it was selected. Wait for the element again immediately before capturing, then call its screenshot method. ElementHandle.screenshot() throws if the handle refers to an element no longer attached to the DOM (ElementHandle.screenshot() API).

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer authenticate to a normal website login with page.authenticate()?
No. That method handles HTTP authentication challenges. A normal application login requires submitting the site’s form or restoring an authorized session.
Can I capture only one element on a logged-in page?
Yes. Use ElementHandle.screenshot() after locating the element; Puppeteer scrolls it into view, and the element must still be attached to the DOM when captured.
