For a panel already visible on your screen, use your operating system’s area-selection screenshot: on Windows, press Windows logo key + Shift + S and drag a rectangle around it; on Mac, open the Screenshot controls, choose an area capture, and drag the crosshair around the panel. If “drawn panel” means graphics inside a webpage you control, export its HTML canvas instead. For repeatable captures of a webpage element, use browser automation such as Playwright.
Choose the method based on where the panel exists
A screenshot of a visible app or desktop panel records the pixels on screen. A canvas export saves the bitmap rendered into a webpage’s canvas. Browser automation captures a page or a selected element. These methods produce different results, so first identify what you need to capture and whether you control the page.

Capture a visible panel on Windows
- Bring the panel to the front and make sure the whole area you want is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose the rectangular snip mode and drag around the panel. If its shape is irregular, choose freeform instead; for a whole app window, choose window mode.
- Select the capture notification to open the snip, or open Snipping Tool to review and save it.
Snipping Tool also offers full-screen capture. Use that when you need the whole display rather than one panel. Microsoft documents the shortcut, capture modes, and saving steps in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
Capture a visible panel on Mac
- Bring the panel into view and decide whether you need a rectangular area or the complete app window.
- Open the built-in Screenshot controls and choose the area-capture option.
- Drag the crosshair around the panel. To capture a window instead, click the target window.
- Use the Screenshot controls to capture and save the result.
Apple’s instructions are for Mac and are not universal across other platforms. Apple also notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. If a capture is blocked, it may be an app restriction rather than a problem with your selection; use an authorized export or capture option offered by that app instead. Save a panel drawn into an HTML canvas
If you control the webpage and the panel is rendered into a <canvas>, you can export the canvas directly. This saves the canvas bitmap, not the rest of the page or the browser interface. Open the page’s developer console and run:

If the page contains several, use a selector that identifies the intended one, for example document.querySelector('#drawing-panel canvas'). The downloaded PNG contains the full canvas. If the panel is only part of a larger canvas, either adjust the drawing/export logic in the page you control or use a screen-region capture when you need exactly the pixels visible in a particular area.

toDataURL('image/png') returns a data URL; PNG is the default format. A canvas that uses cross-origin content may not be origin-clean, in which case the browser can refuse to serialize it. This is a browser security restriction, not something to bypass: use content you are authorized to export and arrange for it to be served with appropriate cross-origin access, or use the page’s supported export method. MDN documents the method and its origin-clean limitation at HTMLCanvasElement: toDataURL().
Automate a repeatable webpage-panel capture with Playwright
Use Playwright when you need a fresh screenshot on demand, such as in a script or test. A locator screenshot targets one element instead of saving the whole viewport. Install Playwright with its browser support, then save this as capture-panel.js and replace the example URL and selector with those for your page:

A selector that matches the wrong element—or no element—will not give the intended result, so inspect the page and verify the locator. For a viewport screenshot rather than a single element, replace the locator screenshot line with await page.screenshot({ path: 'panel.png' });. - Include a small margin only when it helps. A tight selection makes a panel easier to reuse, while a little surrounding context can show where it belongs in the app.
- Check what the method actually captures. OS selection records visible pixels; canvas export saves the canvas bitmap; an element screenshot targets a page element. A panel partly hidden behind another window is not fully present in an ordinary screen selection.
- Pick the export route that matches the result. Use an OS capture for a one-off visible panel, canvas export for the page-controlled drawing itself, and automation for repeat captures. The methods do not all include the same surrounding interface.
- For automated work, wait for the right state. A page can load before its panel is ready. Playwright’s locator wait helps when the element is not immediately visible; use the page’s own state or loading cues if visibility alone does not mean the drawing is complete.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The Windows overlay does not select the panel as expected
Confirm that the capture overlay is open and that you chose rectangular snip for a rectangular selection, or window mode for an entire window. If the target is irregularly shaped, freeform mode may fit better. Reposition or resize the panel before taking the capture if parts of it are off-screen.

The Mac app window cannot be captured
Some apps restrict screenshots of their windows. Check whether the app provides an export or screenshot function for the content, and follow its allowed workflow; do not try to defeat the restriction.
The canvas export throws a security error
Cross-origin content can make a canvas non-origin-clean and prevent toDataURL() from exporting it. Use same-origin or properly authorized content, configure the page’s supported cross-origin access, or ask the site for an export route. If you do not control that page, select the visible area with an OS screenshot tool instead.
The downloaded canvas image is the wrong one or too large
document.querySelector('canvas') selects the first canvas in document order, which may not be the panel. Inspect the page and target the correct canvas with a specific selector. Remember that exporting the canvas saves its full bitmap; an OS region capture is better when you need a crop of what is visible on screen.

Playwright saves the wrong element or fails to find it
Verify that the selector uniquely identifies the panel and that the page is the expected one. The example waits for visibility, but visibility does not necessarily mean an animation, chart, or asynchronous drawing has finished. If necessary, wait for a reliable page-specific ready condition before calling screenshot().
The automated screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check that the URL loads successfully, the target is not covered or outside the expected page state, and any required content has had time to render. For a page-level capture, use the viewport or full-page option that matches the content you need; for one panel, keep the locator capture and check its boundary.
