The most accurate free method is built into YouTube: pause the video, click the player, use . to move forward one frame or , to move back, then capture the paused image with your browser or operating-system screenshot tool. You do not need a camera or capture card. The steps below cover desktop browsers, Edge’s built-in tool, optional extensions, mobile limitations, quality choices, copyright considerations, and an API alternative.
Capture one exact frame on a computer
- Open the YouTube video in a desktop browser. Let the video load far enough that the section you need is available.
- Click once inside the video player. In YouTube’s newer computer experience, keyboard shortcuts may not work until the player has focus.
- Pause at approximately the right moment by pressing K or clicking the pause control.
- With the video still paused, press . (period) to advance one frame. Press , (comma) to move back one frame. YouTube documents these as single-frame controls; hold neither key while fine-tuning.
- Hide controls by moving the pointer away and waiting for the overlay to disappear. This produces a cleaner image. If you need the timestamp or controls visible for documentation, leave them on screen.
- Capture the player with your browser or operating-system screenshot command, then save the image in the format your tool offers.
Frame stepping is available while paused. If the keys change the page, scroll, or open browser commands instead, click the player again and repeat. A video’s encoded frame rate and the browser’s rendering can affect exactly which image appears, so inspect the saved file rather than assuming the first press selected the desired frame.
Use a browser or operating-system screenshot tool
Windows and macOS shortcuts
Use the built-in capture utility after the frame is paused. On Windows, common options include Snipping Tool or the system screenshot shortcut; on macOS, the Screenshot utility can capture a selected rectangle or window. Select only the player when you want to exclude tabs, comments, and recommendations. A window capture is useful when the player is resized or when you need surrounding context.
Built-in tools differ by operating-system version, keyboard layout, and permissions. Before capturing, move notifications, cursor indicators, and unrelated windows away from the video. Save a second copy if the image is evidence or part of a production workflow.

Microsoft Edge Screenshot
Microsoft Edge includes a Screenshot feature that can be opened from the page’s right-click menu or browser settings, and Microsoft documents Ctrl+Shift+S as a shortcut. Pause the YouTube frame first, invoke Screenshot, drag around the player, and choose the copy or save action. Edge describes the feature as capable of capturing moving content when it is paused at the desired moment. The exact menu, shortcut behavior, and availability can vary by device, market, and Edge version.
Full-page versus player-only captures
- Player-only: best for a thumbnail, presentation, reference image, or frame analysis. It avoids channel information and recommendations.
- Window capture: useful when you must show the browser address, title, or surrounding interface.
- Full-screen capture: gives the largest player image, but may include controls and other desktop content.
- Full-page capture: records the page layout, not a higher-resolution video frame. It is generally the wrong choice for a single frame.
Improve the result before saving
Choose a useful player size
Increase the player size before pausing if you need more pixels. Full-screen playback can make the frame larger, but it may also scale the image to your display rather than recover detail absent from the video. Browser zoom changes the player’s displayed size and can alter what a rectangular selection contains; return zoom to a predictable level when consistency matters.
Remove overlays without cropping away content
YouTube controls, subtitles, cards, and notification banners can cover the image. Wait for controls to fade, disable subtitles when they are not needed, and close unrelated overlays. Do not crop so tightly that you remove a face, label, or edge that matters to the record.
Save and verify
Open the saved image at 100 percent and check that it is the intended frame, not a black transition or loading state. PNG is useful for text, diagrams, and lossless editing; JPEG is smaller for photographic frames; WebP may be available in some browser tools. The source material does not establish one universal resolution or format across devices, so choose based on your downstream use.

A YouTube-specific extension can add a camera button or shortcut. One Chrome Web Store listing, YouTubeScreenShot, says it saves the current frame as a PNG and recommends pausing first. Its listing also describes approximate frame-adjustment controls and warns that its frame button may not advance exactly one frame every time.

Another listing, Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services, advertises a keyboard shortcut, clipboard copying, and PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. These are publisher claims that can change as the extension is updated. Before installing any extension:
- Read the current store description, update date, reviews, and requested permissions.
- Prefer an extension that works only on the active tab rather than one requesting broad browsing access.
- Test it on a non-sensitive video and verify the output before relying on it.
- Remove it if its permissions or behavior no longer match your needs.
Extensions are convenience layers, not a requirement. The player’s period/comma controls plus a built-in screenshot utility provide the core workflow without installing anything.
Phones and tablets
Mobile YouTube apps and mobile browsers do not provide the same dependable desktop frame-step workflow. You can pause at the closest moment and use the device’s normal screenshot gesture, but controls, notification bars, and display scaling may appear in the result. For precise frame selection, open the video on a computer, click the player, and use the period/comma controls. If you must work on a phone, take several adjacent screenshots and choose the sharpest one rather than assuming a single tap equals a specific encoded frame.

- The video is not actually focused: click the picture area, pause, and press the key again.
- The page scrolls instead: click inside the player, or use the on-screen pause control before trying frame stepping.
- A browser shortcut intercepts the key: test another browser or use the player controls and a screenshot utility.
- The frame looks unchanged: press the key once at a time and wait for rendering; some videos contain repeated or nearly identical frames.
- The image is black: wait for the video to render, disable battery-saving or graphics restrictions that affect playback, and try a normal (non-private) window.
- Controls cover the subject: pause, move the pointer away, wait for controls to fade, and capture again.
Quality, evidence, and rights
Do not confuse a screenshot with a download
A screenshot records what your browser displayed. It does not create a source video file or guarantee the original upload resolution. If you need multiple frames, repeat the pause-and-step process and use a consistent player size and crop.

Keep context for documentation
For bug reports, moderation records, or research notes, retain the video URL, channel name, capture date, and timestamp separately from the cropped image. A player-only image is cleaner, while a window capture preserves stronger provenance.
Copyright and permission
A frame may be protected by copyright, publicity rights, trademarks, or contractual restrictions. Personal reference does not automatically grant permission to republish. Obtain permission or rely on a legally applicable exception before posting a screenshot, using it commercially, or distributing it in a product. Do not use a screenshot to bypass access controls or imply endorsement by the uploader.
