Paste it with Ctrl + V into Paint or another app. To save a file immediately, press Windows + Print Screen; Windows normally stores the PNG in Pictures > Screenshots. If your HP keyboard assigns Print Screen as a secondary function, hold Fn as well.
Choose whether you want to copy or save the screenshot
These shortcuts produce different results. Pick the row that matches what you need:
| Goal | Shortcut or tool | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Paste the whole display into an app | Print Screen | The image is copied to the clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V. |
| Save a screenshot file directly | Windows + Print Screen | Windows saves a PNG in Pictures > Screenshots on supported HP configurations. |
| Use an on-screen control and edit before saving | Snipping Tool > Full screen | The full display opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate and save it. |
Microsoft documents these full-screen options for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool instructions. HP describes the keyboard behavior and file location in its Windows keyboard-shortcut guide.
Prepare the display
- Open the windows, menus and page you want included.
- Close or move anything that should not appear. A full-screen capture records what is visible at the moment you trigger it.
- If you need a particular browser page, wait until it has finished loading; the built-in shortcut captures the display, not an entire page that extends below the visible area.
Method 1: Copy the full screen with Print Screen
Use the Print Screen key
- Locate the key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen. HP places it differently across laptop models.
- Press the key once. Windows places an image of the whole visible display on the clipboard; it may not show a confirmation window.
- Open Paint, Word, an email compose window or another program that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
- To keep a file, use that program’s save command. In Paint, select File > Save as, choose PNG, JPEG or another available format, select a folder and save.
HP’s guidance describes Print Screen as a clipboard operation. If pressing the key appears to do nothing, try the Fn variation below before troubleshooting Windows.

When the key needs Fn
Some HP laptop keyboards make Print Screen a secondary action. Hold Fn and press PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen. Then paste with Ctrl + V. The exact key position and modifier depend on the HP model, so do not assume every HP keyboard has the same layout.
Method 2: Save a screenshot with Windows + Print Screen
- Arrange the display as required.
- Press Windows + PrtSc (or Windows + Print Screen).
- If your model requires the function modifier, press Fn + Windows + PrtSc.
- Open File Explorer and select Pictures > Screenshots. The saved capture is a PNG according to HP’s shortcut instructions.
The screen may briefly dim when Windows accepts the shortcut. If no new file appears, press Fn + Windows + PrtSc and check the folder again. A shortcut that only copies an image has not saved a file; paste it into Paint or use Snipping Tool instead.

- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
- Launch the app and choose the capture option for Full screen.
- Let Snipping Tool create the capture. The result opens in the tool’s editor.
- Use the available markup controls if needed, then select the save command, choose a location and confirm the file format and name.
This route is useful when the keyboard has no obvious Print Screen key, the shortcut is assigned differently, or you want to annotate before saving. Microsoft lists Full screen as a Snipping Tool mode and covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its official support article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

First inspect keys with small secondary labels; PrtSc, PrtScn and Print Screen are equivalent labels for this purpose. Try the Fn combinations described above. Microsoft also documents a generic Windows fallback, Fn + Windows + Space, for hardware without a PrtScn button. That is a Windows option rather than a guarantee for every HP model, so Snipping Tool is the dependable app-based alternative.

Clipboard capture
Print Screen by itself does not create a named file. Open an image-capable app and press Ctrl + V. If the paste succeeds, save from that app using the format and folder you want.

Saved keyboard capture
For Windows + Print Screen, check Pictures > Screenshots. If OneDrive or another backup tool redirects your Pictures folder, use File Explorer’s search or open the Pictures location shown in your account. The HP documentation establishes the Screenshots folder for the supported configuration; a different Windows setup can use a redirected path.
Snipping Tool capture
Snipping Tool keeps the image in its editor until you save it. Confirm the filename, folder and extension in the save dialog rather than assuming it used the keyboard shortcut’s folder.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears to happen after Print Screen | The key is a secondary Fn function, or the result is waiting on the clipboard. | Try Fn + Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V into Paint. |
| Windows + Print Screen does not create a file | Your HP model needs Fn, or the hardware does not implement that shortcut. | Try Fn + Windows + Print Screen. If it still fails, use Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode. |
| The screenshot is in the clipboard but not in Pictures | You used Print Screen alone, which copies rather than saves. | Paste into Paint or another app and save, or use Windows + Print Screen for a direct file. |
| The image is not the page’s entire length | A full-screen shortcut captures the visible display, not a scrolling webpage. | Scroll and capture separate sections, or use a webpage capture tool designed for full-page content. |
| The key label is unclear | HP keyboard layouts differ by model and region. | Look for PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen, try the Fn modifier, or open Snipping Tool from Start. |
| You are using a non-Windows HP configuration | The documented shortcuts are Windows instructions. | Use the screenshot commands for that operating system; these instructions do not establish one shortcut for every HP operating system. |

The methods above capture your laptop’s visible desktop. If what you actually need is a clean image of a public webpage for documentation, testing or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo captures the URL on its servers instead of capturing your HP display. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation. It also offers transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted, which can simplify a migration.

FAQ
Will a screenshot include content that is hidden below the bottom edge?
No. The HP keyboard shortcuts and Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode capture the visible display. A long webpage requires a separate full-page capture workflow.
Can I choose PNG or JPEG with the Windows shortcut?
The HP-documented Windows + Print Screen method saves PNG. To use another format, paste the clipboard capture into an editor such as Paint and choose its Save as format.
Does every HP laptop put Print Screen in the same place?
No. HP keyboard layouts vary. Look for PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen, and check whether Fn is required on your model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a full-screen shortcut capture a scrolling webpage?
No. It captures the display area visible at the time. Use a dedicated full-page webpage capture method for content below the fold.
What if my HP keyboard has no PrtScn label at all?
Search Start for Snipping Tool and select Full screen. Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows + Space as a generic fallback on hardware without a PrtScn button.
Where can I change the image format after using Print Screen?
Paste the clipboard image into Paint or another editor, then use that program’s Save as command to select the format.
