For a document you need to print, search, or distribute, use Canvas’s Share and export control, export to Google Docs, and download or print the document as a PDF. Chrome Headless can print a publicly reachable page to PDF, but an interactive export is usually more reliable for a Canvas that requires your Google session.
The important limitation is layout: a browser full-page capture follows the page’s document layout. If the Canvas itself is a separate scrolling panel, content inside that panel may be omitted unless it has been expanded or otherwise rendered. The steps below show how to detect and handle that case.

Decide whether you need PNG or PDF
Choose the output before capturing. A PNG records the rendered appearance exactly as an image. A PDF is generally better for printing, text selection, page numbering, and multi-page sharing.

Do not treat a screenshot as proof that every hidden tab, collapsed section, or interactive state was captured. Capture the state you want visible, expand relevant sections, and verify the result.

Open and prepare the Canvas project
- On a desktop browser, open Google Search and select AI Mode.
- Open the prompt controls and choose Canvas. Select the thread containing the project you want to save.
- Wait for the Canvas to finish rendering. Check that headings, images, code blocks, charts, and other deferred elements have appeared.
- If the Canvas pane has its own scrollbar, scroll through the pane once from top to bottom. This gives lazy or deferred content an opportunity to load before you capture it.
- Save or resume the project from its thread history when needed. Canvas is designed to let you create, save, edit, and share projects over time, but exact controls can vary by account, age, region, and product version.
Keep the project in the visual state you intend to publish. Expand accordions, open the correct tab, dismiss transient menus, and wait for loading indicators to disappear. A full-page command captures what the browser has rendered; it does not reconstruct content that is still loading or hidden behind a control.
Capture a full-page PNG with Chrome DevTools
Use the built-in full-size command
- Open Chrome DevTools with
Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows or Linux, orCmd+Option+Ion macOS. - Turn on the device toolbar with
Ctrl+Shift+M(Windows or Linux) orCmd+Shift+M(macOS) if it is not already visible. - In the device-toolbar More options menu, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for Chrome to finish downloading the PNG, then open it and inspect the bottom edge. Confirm that the final heading, image, table, or other expected content is present.
The command captures content below the visible viewport, not just the portion currently on screen. It follows the page’s layout as Chrome sees it, so a very tall Canvas can produce a correspondingly tall image.
Control the capture viewport
The device toolbar lets you choose a preset device or enter a custom width and height. A wider viewport can prevent awkward line wrapping; a narrower one may match a mobile layout. Pick the viewport that represents the audience you are documenting, then recapture after changing it. Device emulation changes CSS breakpoints and can therefore change the Canvas layout itself.
Check for a nested scroll container
A common reason a “full-page” image still ends early is that the outer document is short while the Canvas content scrolls inside a panel. DevTools can extend the document, but it cannot automatically expand every independently scrolling element. If the downloaded PNG stops at the panel’s visible height, use the following checks:
- Scroll the Canvas panel to its bottom before capturing and verify that its content has loaded.
- Look for a pane-level expand, pop-out, or open-in-new-view control and capture that view instead.
- Use the export-to-Docs/PDF workflow when the project is long or must retain selectable text.
- If you control the page implementation, temporarily remove the panel’s fixed height or overflow restriction in a development copy, then capture the expanded document.
Do not stitch multiple screenshots unless you can tolerate seams and duplicated sticky elements. A single exported document is usually cleaner for a long, text-heavy Canvas.
Export the Canvas project to a PDF
Use the documented Canvas export path
- With the project open, select Share and export (the label may appear as Share & export).
- Choose Export to Docs when that option is available.
- Review the resulting Google Doc. Check page breaks, equations, images, code formatting, and headings before distributing it.
- In Google Docs, use the document’s download workflow to choose PDF, or use the print dialog and select a PDF destination.
- Open the downloaded PDF and test text selection, links, page order, and the final page. Correct the Doc and export again if the layout is wrong.
Exporting through Docs is usually the dependable choice for a long Canvas because the document can paginate content instead of forcing everything into one very tall image. It also gives you an editing checkpoint before the final PDF.
Use a direct PDF option when Canvas provides one
Some Canvas artifacts expose a direct PDF action in the export menu. If you see one, preview the file before downloading. Verify that all pages are present and that formulas, images, tables, and code are legible. The available actions are not identical for every account or artifact type, so the menu may show Docs export without a direct PDF option.

When PDF export changes the appearance
Document export can reflow content. A PDF made from Docs may not look pixel-for-pixel identical to the Canvas pane: responsive columns can become a single column, interactive controls may disappear, and fonts can substitute. Use the PNG route when visual fidelity is the priority; use PDF when document behavior is the priority.

Generate a PDF from a URL with Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless is useful when the page can be opened without an interactive sign-in barrier. Run it from a shell with:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf="canvas.pdf" "PAGE_URL"Replace PAGE_URL with the URL you need to print. If the page needs time to render deferred content, add a timeout:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf="canvas.pdf" --timeout=5000 "PAGE_URL"Use a delay appropriate to the page; five seconds is only an example and may be too short for a large or slow Canvas. To suppress browser-generated header and footer text, add:

A fresh headless process normally lacks the cookies, account state, and interactive verification that your normal Chrome profile has. If the output is a sign-in page, an empty shell, or a bot-check screen, return to the interactive Canvas export or use an automation setup that deliberately supplies an authorized session and complies with the service’s rules.
PNG and PDF quality checks
Inspect a PNG
- Open the image at 100% or fit-to-window and inspect the bottom, not only the top.
- Check that lazy-loaded images, charts, and code blocks are present.
- Look for a clipped right edge caused by a horizontal overflow area.
- Confirm that no consent dialog, chat panel, or transient menu covers important content.
- For archival use, keep the original PNG rather than recompressing it through a messaging app.
Inspect a PDF
- Use search to confirm that expected headings and terms are present.
- Select text in several pages to determine whether the export preserved text or produced image-only pages.
- Check page breaks around tables, equations, and code.
- Open the PDF in a second viewer before sharing it.
- Confirm that the final page is not blank and that no footer or header was added unintentionally.
Troubleshooting common capture failures
The result contains only the visible viewport
Cause: You used the normal screenshot command rather than Capture a full size screenshot, or the device toolbar was not active.
Fix: Open DevTools, enable the device toolbar, open More options, and select the full-size command. If it still stops early, investigate a nested Canvas scrollbar.
The bottom of the Canvas is missing
Cause: The Canvas uses an independently scrolling panel, or lower content had not loaded.

Fix: Scroll the panel from top to bottom, wait for deferred elements, expand the panel if possible, and capture again. For a long project, export to Docs and make a PDF instead.
Images or charts are blank
Cause: The page was captured before lazy resources finished loading, or a network request failed.
Fix: Wait until every image placeholder resolves, scroll through the content once, and recapture. If the resource remains unavailable in the interactive Canvas, it will not appear in a screenshot or export; check the source project rather than assuming the capture is complete.
The PDF opens but text cannot be selected
Cause: The export produced image-only pages, or the source artifact did not expose text to the document exporter.
Fix: Try Export to Docs and download the PDF from the resulting document. If selectable text is essential and the export still rasterizes it, keep the original Canvas or provide the source Doc alongside the PDF.
Formatting changes between Canvas and PDF
Cause: PDF pagination and document styles reflow responsive Canvas content.
Fix: Use PNG for an appearance-preserving record. If you need PDF, adjust the exported Doc’s margins, page breaks, and heading styles before downloading.

Headless Chrome returns a login page or blank PDF
Cause: The URL requires an authenticated Google session, interactive consent, or client-side rendering that did not finish before printing.
Fix: Use the signed-in interactive browser export, increase the render timeout, or configure an authorized automation environment. Do not distribute a PDF until you have opened it and confirmed that it contains the project rather than a login or error page.
Chrome does not show the full-size command
Cause: DevTools is open without the device toolbar, or the command is being sought in the wrong menu.
Fix: Turn on Device Mode, then open the device-toolbar More options menu. Labels can move as Chrome changes, so search the command within DevTools if necessary.
The project changed while you were capturing
Cause: The Canvas was still auto-saving, streaming a response, or loading a deferred section.

Use a stable state
Capture after the project has finished rendering and after you have selected the intended tab or expanded section. Keep the browser window at a consistent zoom and viewport when producing a series of screenshots. A changed viewport can trigger a different responsive layout, making two captures difficult to compare.
Keep both source and output
For important work, retain the Canvas thread or exported Doc together with the PNG or PDF. The image or PDF records one rendered state; it does not preserve every interactive state or hidden section. Keeping the source lets you correct a missed section without treating the first capture as definitive.
Protect account data
AI Mode projects can contain private prompts, documents, or account information. Review the image and PDF for personal data, hidden sidebars, and URLs before sharing. Avoid placing an authenticated Canvas URL in a public workflow unless you understand exactly what the recipient can access.
Choose an output naming scheme
Use names that identify the project, format, viewport, and date, such as canvas-project-desktop-2026-10-17.png or canvas-project-a4.pdf. Consistent names make it easier to distinguish a revised capture from an earlier one without editing the file contents.
