How to Capture a Full-Page Screenshot of an Infinite-Scroll Page With Its Footer

To include a footer on an infinite-scroll page, first scroll the page so its dynamic content has a chance to load, then take a full-page screenshot. Playwright’s fullPage: true captures the page’s full scrollable area as it exists at capture time; it does not automatically load every item in an endless feed. Keep scrolling until the footer appears or the page stops growing, then capture and check the result.

Why the footer is missing

A full-page screenshot captures the page’s current scrollable extent. On an infinite-scroll page, additional content may only load when you scroll near the bottom. If you capture before that happens, the screenshot can faithfully show the page as it stood while still omitting content—and a footer that has not yet been reached.

Separate the two jobs: trigger content loading by scrolling, then capture the loaded page. Playwright and Puppeteer document full-page screenshot options, but their screenshot calls do not claim to exhaust an infinite feed automatically. A truly endless feed also needs a practical stopping rule.

Capture it with Playwright

Install Playwright and its browser if your project does not already have them. For example, in a Node.js project, install the package with npm install playwright and install a browser with npx playwright install chromium. The example below scrolls by roughly one viewport at a time, waits briefly for content to load, and stops when repeated checks show no increase in document height. Adjust the delay and maximum scroll count for the site you are capturing.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 } });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
    await page.waitForTimeout(1000); // Let initial content render.

    let previousHeight = 0;
    let stableChecks = 0;
    const maxScrolls = 40;

    for (let i = 0; i < maxScrolls && stableChecks < 3; i++) {
      const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
      if (height <= previousHeight) {
        stableChecks++;
      } else {
        stableChecks = 0;
      }
      previousHeight = height;

      await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollBy(0, window.innerHeight));
      await page.waitForTimeout(800); // Give scroll-triggered loading time.
    }

    await page.waitForTimeout(1000); // Allow the final layout to settle.
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace https://example.com with the target URL. The repeated stable-height check is a practical stopping heuristic, not a Playwright feature or proof that every possible item has loaded. If the footer is visible before the maximum scroll count, you can stop earlier; if the page keeps adding content, increase the limit only when capturing more content is useful.

Check that the page itself is the scroll surface

The example scrolls the document. Some sites put a feed inside a nested panel with its own scrollbar; in that case, scrolling the window may not load more items. Inspect the page and scroll the relevant panel instead. A footer outside that panel may require scrolling the document after loading the panel’s content.

Use an element screenshot when only the footer matters

If the goal is to capture a particular component rather than the entire page, locate that element and use an element-level screenshot. Playwright documents both full-page and element screenshots, as well as returning screenshot data as a buffer. Puppeteer also documents page and element screenshots. Element capture does not replace the need to load content that is not yet present.

Use Puppeteer if it is already in your project

Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() supports a full-page option. After using the same scroll-and-wait approach to load the content you need, capture the page like this:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
    // Scroll and wait for dynamic content before capturing.
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The minimal Puppeteer example shows the capture call; add the loading loop from the Playwright example using Puppeteer’s page-evaluation and wait methods before the screenshot. Puppeteer also documents clipping and output-format options. Choose between Playwright and Puppeteer based on the automation stack already in use and the browser coverage and language your project needs; the documented options do not establish that one is faster or more reliable on every site.

Verify the result and troubleshoot common failures

  • Footer is still missing: Check whether it exists in the loaded page, whether the document height grew during scrolling, and whether the footer is conditional on reaching a particular point. If content loads inside a nested scroll panel, scroll that panel rather than only the window.
  • The screenshot ends too early: The page may still have been growing when the loop stopped, or the maximum scroll count may have been reached. Increase the limit or wait longer between scrolls, then inspect the saved image. An endless feed cannot always be exhausted, so decide how much content the capture needs.
  • Images are blank or incomplete: Lazy-loaded images and other resources can appear after the text. Wait for them to settle and inspect the saved image; a screenshot API cannot guarantee identical loading behavior across sites.
  • Sticky headers are repeated or overlap content: A full-page capture may expose layout behavior that is not apparent in a single viewport. Inspect the image and, if necessary, use custom page styling or capture only the relevant element.
  • Navigation or capture fails: Confirm the target URL is reachable from the automation environment, the browser installation completed, and the script reaches the screenshot call. Use a practical navigation wait condition and allow the site’s content to render before capturing.

Playwright describes viewport, element, and full-page captures as distinct screenshot targets, and suggests pairing visual screenshots with accessibility snapshots when you need to understand page structure and text. The screenshot remains the way to verify whether the rendered footer and expected last content are actually visible.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot API rather than a browser automation script, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. For an infinite-scroll target, the capture still reflects what the page loads during the capture; a full-page option alone should not be treated as proof that an endless feed has been exhausted. ScreenshotNeo also accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can each be turned off.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available parameters and options. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; each response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
