Use a browser-level capture rather than trying to read the iframe from the page’s JavaScript. With Playwright, the basic method is await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). The browser captures the page’s scrollable extent; same-origin restrictions affect access to a cross-origin frame’s document, not whether its rendered pixels can be captured. Because the official documentation does not guarantee every frame will appear in every dynamic or nested scenario, inspect the resulting image in the browser you target.
Capture the full page with Playwright
For repeatable captures in a script or test pipeline, use Playwright’s page screenshot API. Its fullPage: true option captures the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. See the Playwright screenshot documentation and Page API.

Why cross-origin iframes are different from page screenshots
The browser’s same-origin policy limits a page script’s ability to inspect a document served from a different origin. In practice, parent-page JavaScript cannot simply read that iframe’s DOM as if it belonged to the top-level page. That restriction does not mean the browser is unable to render the frame or capture the page’s pixels. These are separate operations: accessing the iframe document is a scripting permission; taking a screenshot is a browser capture. See MDN’s explanation of the same-origin policy.

Use frameLocator only when you need frame interaction
Playwright’s frameLocator API lets a script locate or interact with elements inside a frame. It is not the screenshot command and is not a prerequisite for capturing the rendered page. Use it when your workflow needs to target a control or verify content inside the iframe; use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) to capture the page. Capture manually in Firefox Developer Tools
For a one-off capture, Firefox Developer Tools provides a full-page screenshot command. The Web Console helper :screenshot --fullpage captures parts of the webpage beyond the current window bounds. You can also enable the screenshot toolbar button. The Firefox screenshot documentation describes these options.

Firefox also has an iframe context picker for inspecting a frame in Developer Tools. That picker targets a frame for developer-tool inspection; it is not the control that takes a full-page screenshot. See Working with iframes in Firefox Developer Tools.
Check the result when a frame is missing or incomplete
The cited browser documentation explains full-page capture and frame tooling, but does not promise that every cross-origin iframe state will be included under all conditions. Verify the screenshot in the browser and version you intend to use, especially for pages with lazy-loaded frames, nested frames, internal frame scrolling, animation, or permission gates.

- Frame is blank: check whether it has loaded and whether it requires consent, sign-in, or another permission before showing content.
- Only part of the frame appears: determine whether the iframe has its own scrollable region. A full-page capture concerns the top-level page’s scrollable extent; it is not a guarantee that independently scrollable frame content will be expanded.
- Content changes between captures: wait for the relevant page or frame state to settle, then inspect a fresh capture. Dynamic content may not be in the same state on every run.
- Frame is nested: inspect the output rather than assuming a nested cross-origin frame will behave like a simple embedded frame.
- Capture fails in automation: check the navigation error and timeout, confirm the browser process launched successfully, and verify that the destination is reachable from the machine running Playwright.
These checks help isolate page-state and capture issues; they do not bypass browser security or guarantee that a gated third-party frame will display.

Can Playwright take a screenshot of an iframe by itself?
The documented method here captures the full page. The page screenshot and frame-level targeting are separate APIs; use frameLocator when you need to find or interact with an element in a frame.
Does a full-page screenshot bypass cross-origin security?
No. It captures rendered output; it does not grant page JavaScript permission to read the cross-origin iframe’s document.
