Use Playwright’s fullPage: true to capture the entire scrollable page, then choose whether its CSS animation should be disabled or left running. For a repeatable still without active motion, set animations: 'disabled'. To leave motion untouched, use animations: 'allow'; the resulting image may show an incidental frame rather than a particular moment.
Capture the full page and choose how animation behaves
Playwright treats page size and animation behavior as separate screenshot options. fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page, rather than just the visible viewport. The animations setting determines what happens to CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations during capture. See the Playwright Page screenshot API and Playwright screenshot guide.

Freeze motion for a more repeatable still
With animations: 'disabled', Playwright stops animations and transitions for the screenshot operation. The result is not always the animation’s initial appearance: finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, firing transitionend, while infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot and then played over afterward.

Leave motion active
Use animations: 'allow' if the page’s animated design should remain active during capture:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true,
animations: 'allow',
});
The image is still a single still frame. The API documentation does not promise a particular frame or a way to select one, so the visible animation state can depend on timing.

Choose the right capture approach
| Need | Approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A full-page still with motion suppressed | Playwright with fullPage: true and animations: 'disabled' |
Finite effects are fast-forwarded; infinite effects are canceled to their initial state for capture. |
| A full-page still with animation active | Playwright with fullPage: true and animations: 'allow' |
Animation is left untouched; no specific frame timing is guaranteed. |
| A manual full-page screenshot | Firefox Developer Tools screenshot icon | Firefox documents a full-page screenshot workflow, but its screenshot documentation does not explain whether or how it freezes or selects an animation frame. |
For the manual Firefox route, see Mozilla’s Taking screenshots documentation. Use Playwright when you need to set animation behavior explicitly or automate capture.

When you need a particular animation moment
The documented Playwright screenshot options cover allowing or disabling animation, not selecting an exact frame. If the image must show a specific visual moment, these settings alone do not establish how to time that frame. Avoid treating animations: 'allow' as a deterministic frame selector.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API can return an image or PDF; for a full-page image, request full_page=true using the documented parameter names. This cURL example saves a WebP image of the full page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-d full_page=true
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The API’s documented features do not establish a control for choosing a particular CSS animation frame.

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot only shows the viewport: Check that
fullPage: trueis set on the screenshot call; omitting it captures only the visible area. - The animation looks finished instead of at its starting point: That can happen with
animations: 'disabled'when the effect is finite; Playwright fast-forwards finite animations to completion. - An infinite animation appears at its initial state: This is the documented disabled behavior. If motion should remain active, set
animations: 'allow'. - The active animation shows a different moment on different captures: The API does not promise a frame when animations are allowed. If a stable non-running image is acceptable, disable animations; otherwise, do not assume the setting picks a specific moment.
- You are using Firefox’s manual screenshot workflow: Its documentation explains full-page capture via the screenshot icon, but does not establish animation-freezing behavior. Use Playwright’s explicit option if that behavior matters.
Performance and reliability considerations
A full-page screenshot covers more content than a viewport capture, but the cited documentation does not provide timing or resource-use figures. If repeatability matters, explicitly set the animation mode rather than relying on an unspecified default. For version-sensitive API behavior, check the Playwright documentation matching your installed version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `fullPage: true` capture only the part currently visible?
No. It captures the full scrollable page, as if the page were on a very tall screen.

Does disabling animation always show the first frame?
No. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot.
Can Playwright capture a specified frame while animations are allowed?
The cited screenshot API documentation does not establish a frame-selection option or guarantee a particular frame.
