For a full-page screenshot from the command line, use Playwright CLI’s --full-page option:

What “full page” captures
A regular screenshot usually means the portion of a page visible in the current viewport. A full-page capture extends the image to include the page’s scrollable content below the fold. It captures the web page itself—not the browser window, tabs, address bar, or operating-system desktop.
Full-page capture is useful for documenting a long article, saving a page for review, or creating an image for an automated workflow. It does not guarantee that every element a person could eventually see will be present: content loaded only after scrolling, pages that keep growing, and animations or changing data can affect the result. Check the output against the live page.

Capture a full page with Playwright CLI
Open the page and save the image
With Playwright CLI installed and its browser setup complete, run:
playwright-cli open https://example.com
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.pngThe screenshot command works on the current page in the CLI browser session, so open the URL you want before taking the screenshot. The CLI is headless by default, according to Playwright’s getting-started documentation. The command saves a PNG when the filename ends in .png.
Playwright documents the screenshot command and full-page option in its CLI screenshot and PDF reference. Consult the CLI’s current setup instructions if the executable or browser is not available in your environment.

Choose an image format and resolution
The filename extension can select JPEG or WebP instead of PNG; for example:

playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.webpPlaywright also documents --type for choosing the image type explicitly. Use --hires to capture device pixels rather than CSS pixels. That can produce a larger, sharper image, but its image coordinates will not match CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. If you are going to click or inspect points in the screenshot, keep that coordinate difference in mind.
Capture the page you actually need
If the page depends on a login, a consent choice, or an interaction, prepare that state in the browser session before capture. The screenshot command captures the current page; it does not imply that a site has been logged into or that a particular banner has been dismissed. For a one-off capture, inspect the image afterward and rerun it if the page was not in the intended state.
Use Playwright’s API for a repeatable script
For scheduled work or an existing browser-automation script, the Playwright API provides the same full-page behavior through fullPage: true. Save this as a JavaScript file and run it in an environment where the Playwright package and browser are installed:

Playwright’s screenshot guide describes full-page capture as an image of the full scrollable page, as if displayed on a very tall screen. The Page API reference documents screenshot options, including output paths and scale.
For a page that needs extra time to settle, add an explicit wait suited to that site before taking the screenshot. A fixed delay may help with predictable animation or delayed rendering, but it is not proof that all content has loaded. The cited screenshot documentation does not promise that a full-page capture will trigger every site’s lazy-loaded content. Inspect pages with lazy images, infinite scrolling, sticky elements, or frequently changing content and adjust the preparation step as needed.

Check the result and troubleshoot common problems
- The output only shows the visible area: Confirm that you ran the Playwright screenshot command with
--full-page, or usedfullPage: truein the API. A finite Chrome--window-sizeexample is not the same documented behavior. - The command cannot find a page or executable: The CLI screenshot command operates on the current session. Open the target URL first, and confirm the CLI is installed and browser setup is complete.
- Images or sections are missing: The site may load them only after scrolling, after a delay, or after interaction. Prepare the page, wait for the relevant content, and inspect the resulting file; do not assume every lazy-loaded element was triggered.
- The page appears at the wrong size: Set the intended viewport or width before capture. In Playwright CLI, remember that
--hiresuses device pixels; shot-scraper 0.14.3 documents a default width of 1280 pixels when not set. - The screenshot is unexpectedly huge or changes between runs: A long or continuously growing page can yield a tall image or capture content at different moments. Use a stable page state, consider capturing a specific element where supported, and compare the output with the page.
- You need a PDF, not an image: Use an explicit PDF workflow. Chrome documents
--print-to-pdf; Playwright CLI has a separate PDF command. A PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshot is not a PDF export.
