Firefox can capture a selected region, a detected page element, the visible viewport, or the entire page, but its built-in Screenshots tool does not promise a 1920×1080 export. To make a true 1080p image, capture the content you need, inspect the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions, and crop or resize it when necessary. Your viewport size, display scale, and page zoom all affect the result.
What “1080p screenshot” means
Most people use “1080p screenshot” to mean an image that is exactly 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. Others mean a screenshot taken while using a 1920×1080 monitor. Those are not the same thing: Firefox captures web content, not the physical screen, and the saved image dimensions depend on the capture area and rendering scale.
Mozilla’s current Firefox Screenshots help documentation describes capture targets and download controls, but it does not document a numeric 1920×1080 export box. Therefore, selecting Save visible is not a guarantee of a 1920×1080 file. Always check the downloaded image dimensions before delivering it.
Capture a page with Firefox Screenshots
- Open the page. Wait for the content you need to render. If the page changes after loading, let images, fonts, and dynamic components settle before capturing.
- Open Firefox Screenshots. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the capture scope. Drag a custom rectangle, click a highlighted page part, choose Save visible, or choose Save full page.
- Save or copy the result. Select Download to save an image in Firefox’s normal download folder. Select Copy to place the capture on the clipboard. Firefox also lists Ctrl+S/Command+S for downloading and Ctrl+C/Command+C for copying.
- Verify the file. Open the downloaded image’s properties or use an image editor to read its width and height. Do not infer the dimensions from the monitor resolution or the mode name.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | What it captures | 1080p certainty | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selected region | A rectangle that you draw | Not guaranteed; measure the saved file | A specific card, chart, or crop |
| Detected page part | An automatically highlighted element or section | Not guaranteed; element dimensions vary | A paragraph, image, button, or component |
| Save visible | The currently visible web-page area | Not guaranteed; viewport and scale control the output | A single-screen view |
| Save full page | The complete scrollable page | Usually taller than 1,080 pixels | Documentation, landing pages, and long receipts |
Use Save visible when the subject must resemble what a visitor sees in the current viewport. Use a selected region when the subject itself matters more than the viewport. Full-page capture is useful for archival work, but it is normally incompatible with a strict 1920×1080 canvas because the height grows with the page.

How to obtain an exact 1920×1080 file
Method 1: Capture, then verify and crop
This is the most dependable Firefox-only workflow because it does not assume a particular monitor, zoom level, or device-pixel ratio.
- Resize the browser window so the content you want is visible in roughly a 16:9 area.
- Open Take Screenshot and drag the region you need.
- Download the image and inspect its dimensions.
- If it is not 1920×1080, crop it to the required aspect ratio and resize it to exactly 1920×1080 in an image editor. Keep the original capture so you can redo the crop without quality loss.
A crop changes framing; resizing changes pixel dimensions. If the output must remain sharp, avoid enlarging a small capture. Capture a larger region first, then reduce it to 1920×1080.
Method 2: Control the viewport before using Save visible
For a screenshot representing a viewport, set the browser content area to a 16:9 layout before opening Firefox Screenshots. Browser chrome is not part of the web-page capture, so the window’s outer size is not the same as the CSS viewport. After capturing, check the file rather than assuming that a 1920×1080 monitor produced 1920×1080 image pixels.
Fine-tune a selected rectangle
Firefox lets you adjust a selected region with pointer marker points. Keyboard users can move the crosshairs and selection edges one pixel at a time, or in ten-pixel increments when combined with Shift. Mozilla notes that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland. If you are using a Wayland session, use the pointer, switch sessions, or finish the exact crop in an image editor.

Why the pixel dimensions vary
CSS pixels versus image pixels
Firefox’s web content is laid out in CSS pixels. The WebExtension capture API documents capture rectangles in CSS pixels and says its default rendering scale is devicePixelRatio. A CSS pixel is therefore not always one physical image pixel.
Device-pixel ratio
devicePixelRatio is the ratio between physical display pixels and CSS pixels. Retina and other high-density displays can produce more image pixels for the same CSS-sized area. Two computers showing the same page at the same apparent size can consequently save images with different dimensions.
Zoom changes the effective scale
Browser page zoom affects devicePixelRatio and the relationship between CSS coordinates and output pixels. If two captures differ unexpectedly, return the page to a known zoom level, recapture, and verify both files. Do not use a zoom percentage as a substitute for measuring the output.
Practical workflows
For a presentation slide or social post
Use a selected region around the subject, leave a little extra space for later trimming, and export a verified 1920×1080 derivative from the original. This avoids forcing a full page into a 16:9 frame.

For a browser-viewport record
Set the page state first, including any open menus or expanded sections, then choose Save visible. Record the page zoom and verify the resulting dimensions so another person can reproduce the framing.
For a long webpage
Choose Save full page when completeness matters. Expect a height greater than 1,080 pixels. If a 1920×1080 deliverable is also required, use the full-page image as a source and make a separate 16:9 crop that identifies which section is shown.
For one component
Click the automatically highlighted page part when Firefox identifies the desired element. If the highlight is wrong, drag a custom rectangle instead. Component sizes are determined by the page’s layout, so neither mode guarantees 1920×1080.
Troubleshooting
“Take Screenshot” is missing
- Right-click in an empty part of the document rather than on a form control, image, or browser toolbar.
- Use the platform shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Make sure the pointer is over the webpage content, not a separate browser panel.
The image is not 1920×1080
- That is expected: Firefox’s built-in help does not promise a fixed export size.
- Check the saved file’s actual width and height.
- Capture a larger area, then crop and resize to 1920×1080 in an editor.
- Check page zoom and display scaling before repeating the capture.
The full-page result is extremely tall
Full-page mode captures the entire scrollable document. Switch to Save visible or a selected region for a single-screen image, or retain the tall file as the complete record and create a separate 1080p crop.

A selection is slightly off
Use Firefox’s marker points and keyboard movement. One-pixel movement is available from the keyboard, with ten-pixel movement when Shift is held. On Wayland, the crosshair movement limitation means pointer adjustment or post-capture cropping may be necessary.
Dynamic content or lazy images are missing
Scroll through the relevant area first, wait for content to finish loading, and then capture. Firefox Screenshots records the page state at capture time; it does not provide a documented wait-for-network-idle or lazy-image control in this interface.
Reliability, quality, and file handling
- Define the scope before the size. Decide whether the reader needs one viewport, one element, or the entire page; then solve the 1920×1080 requirement with verification and cropping.
- Keep an original. Save the first capture before resizing so you can produce alternate crops without repeatedly degrading the source.
- Record conditions. For repeatable work, note Firefox version, operating system, page zoom, viewport arrangement, and whether the display uses a high-density scale.
- Expect page-state differences. Cookie dialogs, expanded menus, animations, and personalized content can change what is captured. Set the page state deliberately before invoking the tool.
- Check output after every change. A new monitor, zoom setting, operating-system scale, or browser window can alter image dimensions even when the webpage itself is unchanged.

Bottom line
Firefox Screenshots is convenient for selecting visible content or a full page, but it does not expose a documented exact-1080p export control. Capture the correct scope, verify the downloaded dimensions, and crop or resize to 1920×1080 when that exact canvas matters. For automated, repeatable captures, use an API that lets you control the viewport and reports whether a clean shot was billed.
