To stop the next Xbox Game Pass charge, sign in to the Microsoft account that bought the subscription, open Services & subscriptions, select Game Pass, and complete the cancellation or recurring-billing prompts before the next billing date. You can also manage it on an Xbox console under Settings > Account > Subscriptions. Afterward, confirm that the subscription shows an expiry date or a Turn on recurring billing option.
Cancel Game Pass from your Microsoft account
The account that purchased Game Pass controls its renewal. A family member’s account, a different personal Microsoft account, or a third-party billing account may not show the subscription you are trying to cancel.

- Open account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase the Game Pass subscription.
- Find the Game Pass entry and open its management controls.
- Choose the cancellation or recurring-billing option, then follow every confirmation screen.
- Return to the subscription details and check its status, expiry date, or recurring-billing control.
Xbox’s Game Pass page tells subscribers to cancel in their Microsoft account or on an Xbox console before the next billing date: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass. The exact button wording can vary by account, subscription type, region, and interface version.
Cancel PC Game Pass the same way
PC Game Pass is still a Microsoft subscription, so the key question is not whether you use a PC or console; it is which Microsoft account was billed. Open the same Services & subscriptions page, locate the PC Game Pass entry, and use its cancellation or recurring-billing controls. If you play on both PC and Xbox, check the plan name carefully so you change the subscription that actually appears on the receipt.

The Xbox account that launches the Xbox app may not be the account that paid for the subscription. If the plan is missing, sign out and test the other Microsoft accounts used in the household before assuming that cancellation is unavailable.
Cancel on an Xbox console
If you prefer to use the console, open the subscription controls from the account settings:
- Turn on the Xbox and sign in to the profile that purchased Game Pass.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account > Subscriptions.
- Select the Game Pass subscription.
- Open the cancellation or recurring-billing controls and complete the confirmation prompts.
Microsoft notes that console labels can differ between interface versions. If the subscription is not listed, use the web account page with the purchasing account rather than assuming the console has no active plan. The official Xbox cancellation article is available at https://support.xbox.com/help/subscriptions-billing/manage-subscriptions/cancel-recurring-billing-or-subscription.

Do not rely only on a confirmation pop-up or an email. Reopen the subscription details and look for one of these outcomes:
- An expiry date showing when your paid access ends.
- A Turn on recurring billing link or button. Microsoft says this wording means recurring billing is already off.
- A status that explicitly says the subscription will not renew.
When recurring billing is off, Game Pass access normally continues until the displayed expiry date. Turning off renewal is not the same as deleting the subscription immediately. Microsoft’s guidance on status labels and continued access is at https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/accounts-billing/subscriptions/turn-recurring-billing-on-or-off-for-a-microsoft-subscription.
Save the expiry date in a calendar or screenshot the status page if the date matters to you. Check the payment account after the next expected renewal only if a charge appears or the status is unclear.
Turning off renewal versus ending access now
Most cancellation screens are really asking whether you want to stop recurring billing. That action prevents another automatic payment while preserving the paid period already shown in your account. You should not interpret an expiry date as a failed cancellation: it is normally the date on which the current entitlement ends.

Choose the outcome you actually want
| Account action | What it does | Access after the action | Refund result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off recurring billing | Stops the next automatic renewal when completed before the billing date. | Usually continues through the expiry date shown in the account. | Does not itself guarantee money back for a charge already made. |
| Cancel and request a refund, if offered | Ends or changes the subscription and submits a separate refund request. | Depends on the account’s cancellation screen and the decision on the request. | Eligibility is reviewed under Xbox and regional rules; approval is not automatic. |
Use the first option when your priority is preventing future charges while keeping the remaining paid time. Use the second only when a recent payment has already posted and the account presents a refund route.
Act before the renewal date
Microsoft’s general subscription troubleshooting guidance warns that a cancellation made fewer than two days before a billing date may not prevent that charge. This is general Microsoft timing guidance, not a promise that every Game Pass account follows the same processing cutoff. Open the subscription page now, note the displayed renewal date, and do not wait until the final hours. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/unable-to-cancel-your-microsoft-subscription.
For example, if your account shows a renewal on the 20th and you cancel on the 18th or later, the payment may already be in processing. Canceling earlier gives the account more time to record the change. The displayed date is the useful reference; do not substitute a guessed date based on when you usually play.

If Game Pass is missing from the subscription page
Check the signed-in account
Sign out and test the Microsoft accounts used by the household. The subscription appears only under the account that purchased it. A console profile that plays the games is not necessarily the billing account. Receipts, order history, or the payment descriptor can help identify the buyer.
Check for a different purchase channel
If another company billed the transaction, Microsoft says that provider must manage the subscription. Review the payment descriptor, receipt, and order history to identify who charged you before contacting the wrong support team. A subscription purchased through a third party will not necessarily be controllable from Microsoft’s Services & subscriptions page.
Review payment history
For an unexplained Microsoft charge, use Microsoft’s payment-history investigation and subscription-support routes linked from Microsoft’s cancellation troubleshooting page. Have the charge date, amount, and the relevant Microsoft account ready.

What to do after a charge remains
- Open the subscription page and confirm whether recurring billing is off or still active.
- Compare the charge date with the renewal date shown on the account.
- Check other household Microsoft accounts and any third-party billing receipts.
- If the account status and charge do not match, use Microsoft or Xbox billing support rather than repeatedly submitting cancellation requests.
A cancellation close to the billing date can explain a charge that was already in processing. If support determines that the payment was not authorized by the account you checked, follow the payment-history investigation process instead of treating it as a normal cancellation.

Refunds are separate from cancellation
Stopping renewal does not automatically refund a payment that has already been taken. The current Xbox Game Pass page states that a subscriber who did not turn off recurring billing before payment may be eligible for a refund of the most recent recurring-billing charge when canceling within 30 days after payment. That 30-day window is a possible eligibility route, not a guaranteed approval. Start with the refund option displayed in your account or contact Xbox support: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass.
Refund decisions can depend on the product, timing, and region. Microsoft’s general policy directs Xbox subscription questions to Xbox’s cancellation and refund guidance rather than applying Microsoft 365 rules to Game Pass. Read the policy at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/microsoft-subscription-refund-policy.
Information to keep for a refund request
- The Microsoft account that was billed.
- The payment date and amount.
- The Game Pass plan shown in the subscription page.
- The cancellation date and the status displayed afterward.
- The order or transaction details from Microsoft payment history.
Do not assume that losing access immediately means a refund was approved, or that continued access means a refund is impossible. The account’s message and the support decision control the result.

When the account shows an expiry date, paid Game Pass access generally remains available until that date. At expiry, benefits tied to the subscription can end, including access to games supplied through the plan and other plan entitlements. A title you own separately is not dependent on Game Pass, but a title available only through the subscription can require a purchase or another active entitlement after expiry.
Download status does not override licensing. Keeping a game installed does not create a permanent license when the Game Pass entitlement ends. If you want to continue a particular game, check its ownership or purchase status before the expiry date.
If you share a console, other profiles may have been using benefits made available through the purchasing account. Turning off renewal does not transfer ownership to those profiles. They can continue using an entitlement only while the account and plan still provide it under the console’s normal sharing arrangements.
Common cancellation mistakes
Canceling the wrong Microsoft account
Searching for the subscription while signed in to a family member’s account produces an empty or incomplete list. Identify the buyer from the receipt or payment record first.

Confusing expiry with an active renewal
An expiry date is normally the expected end of the current paid period. A Turn on recurring billing control indicates that automatic renewal is off; it is not an invitation that you must select to complete cancellation.
Waiting until the billing day
Processing cutoffs can mean a late cancellation does not stop the next payment. The general Microsoft guidance is to avoid the final two days whenever possible.
Expecting an automatic refund
Cancellation and refund review are different actions. If money has already been charged, look for the account’s refund route and check the Xbox-specific eligibility information.
Assuming an installed game remains yours
Installation is not proof of ownership. Once the subscription expires, a game supplied only through Game Pass can require a purchase or another active entitlement.
A quick verification checklist
- You are signed in to the purchasing Microsoft account.
- Game Pass appears under Services & subscriptions or console subscriptions.
- You completed every cancellation or recurring-billing confirmation prompt.
- The details page shows an expiry date, a “Turn on recurring billing” option, or another explicit no-renewal status.
- You recorded the expiry date.
- If a payment already posted, you treated refund eligibility as a separate request.
When to contact support
Contact Xbox or Microsoft support when the subscription is absent from every likely account, the account says recurring billing is off but a later renewal posts, the charge belongs to a different billing provider, or the refund option is unavailable despite a recent payment. Include the account, transaction date, amount, and screenshots of the subscription status. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting page is https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/unable-to-cancel-your-microsoft-subscription.
Explain whether you are asking to stop a future renewal, investigate an existing charge, or request a refund. Those are separate support questions, and stating the desired outcome helps direct the case to the right process. Third-party charges must be handled by the provider shown on the receipt.
The safest sequence is therefore: cancel from the buyer’s account before the displayed billing date, verify the no-renewal status, keep access through the shown expiry date, and handle any refund request as a separate eligibility decision.

Can I cancel PC Game Pass without an Xbox console?
Yes. PC Game Pass is managed from the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page using the purchasing Microsoft account. A console is not required.
Does turning off recurring billing end Game Pass immediately?
Usually not. When Microsoft shows an expiry date, access generally continues until that date. The account’s cancellation message controls the exact result.
What does “Turn on recurring billing” mean?
Microsoft uses that wording to indicate recurring billing is already off. Selecting it would turn automatic renewal back on; it is not required to finish cancellation.
Why can’t I find my Game Pass subscription?
You may be signed in to the wrong Microsoft account, or another provider may have billed the purchase. Check household accounts, receipts, order history, and the payment descriptor. The provider that charged you manages a third-party subscription.
Will canceling Game Pass refund my latest payment?
Not automatically. The Xbox Game Pass page says you may be eligible for a refund of the most recent recurring-billing charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment, but approval depends on the account, product, timing, and region.
What if I cancel two days before renewal?
Microsoft’s general subscription guidance warns that a cancellation made fewer than two days before a billing date may not prevent that charge. Cancel as soon as possible and compare the charge with the displayed renewal date.
Can I keep downloaded Game Pass games after expiry?
Keeping a game installed does not create ownership. A title supplied only through Game Pass can require a purchase or another active entitlement after the subscription expires.
The Bottom Line
Use the purchasing Microsoft account to cancel Game Pass in Services & subscriptions or on Xbox under Settings > Account > Subscriptions. Finish every prompt, then verify an expiry date or “Turn on recurring billing” status. Cancel early because a change made fewer than two days before billing may not stop the next charge. Refunds are separate: Xbox says a recent recurring charge may be eligible within 30 days, but approval is not guaranteed.
