Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can cancel Google AI Plus or move to a cheaper Google One plan without immediately deleting files. The safe approach is to check your storage use first, export or move anything that will not fit the replacement quota, verify the copies, and then change the membership. A downgrade normally starts at the next billing-cycle boundary; a cancellation removes the extra storage after the current paid period ends.
What changes when you leave Google AI Plus?
Google AI Plus is a Google One membership with 400 GB shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Your plan change does not erase that content at the moment you click a button. The important date is the end of the current billing cycle: that is when a cancellation removes the additional storage, while a downgrade switches the account to the smaller quota you selected.

After the change, your account can use the no-charge personal storage Google provides, up to 15 GB, or the capacity of the lower paid plan. If your account fits within the replacement quota, normal use can continue. If it does not, Google applies service restrictions until you reduce usage or purchase storage again.
Choose the option that matches your goal
| Option | When it takes effect | What happens to storage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel membership | At the end of the current billing cycle | Expanded storage and AI Plus benefits end; the account falls to up to 15 GB of no-charge personal storage | You can fit the account into the free quota or have safely moved the excess data |
| Downgrade to another Google One plan | At the start of the next billing cycle | The selected lower quota replaces 400 GB | You still need paid storage, but less than 400 GB |
| Move copies elsewhere | Whenever you complete the export or transfer | The Google originals remain until you decide what to remove; the destination must have enough capacity | You want to leave Google storage or keep an independent archive |
Google does not state a single price that applies to every account for lower plans. Availability, currency, taxes and billing can vary by account and region, so use the price and quota shown in Google One when you review the change.

Check your storage before changing the membership
The safest target is not merely “less than 400 GB.” It is usage below the quota that will remain after the change, with enough headroom for new mail, documents and photos. A small amount of free space also gives you room to recover from an export or cleanup mistake.
Record the numbers that matter
- Current total storage use for the Google Account.
- How much is used by Gmail, Drive and Photos.
- The quota of the lower Google One plan you are considering, or the 15 GB no-charge quota if you will cancel completely.
- The date shown for the next billing event and the date on which the membership change will become effective.
If the account is already over the quota you plan to keep, make a backup or move data before confirming the change. Do not rely on the fact that files remain visible immediately after cancellation; the restrictions begin when the smaller quota takes effect.
Make a backup with Google Takeout
Google Takeout can create an export of the products and data you select. It is useful when the destination will be a computer, an external drive or another storage service.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the account that owns the AI Plus membership.
- Select the Google products you need. Include Gmail, Drive, Photos or other products only if you want them in the archive; selecting fewer products produces a more focused export.
- Choose the delivery destination offered by Takeout, such as a download link or another available destination.
- Choose the archive format and split size that suit the amount of data and the free space available where you will store it.
- Create the export and wait for Google to prepare it. Large accounts can require substantial time before a download is ready.
- Download every archive part to a computer or another safe location with enough free space. An external hard drive is an optional local destination when the archive is larger than the computer’s internal storage.
Takeout download links expire in about seven days after creation, according to Google’s current export documentation. Treat that as a deadline: if the link expires before you have downloaded the files, create a new export.
Google Account Help states: “If you download your Google data, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.”

Downloading is therefore a copy operation, not a cleanup operation. Keep the original account intact until you have checked the archive and decided what, if anything, to remove.
Verify the backup before deleting or downgrading
An export is only useful if you can open it and locate the material you expected. Verification should happen while the 400 GB membership is still active.
- Open representative files from each important product in the downloaded archive or destination.
- For Drive, test several document types and folders rather than checking only the archive’s top-level directory.
- For Photos, open photographs and videos from different dates and devices.
- For Gmail, confirm that the messages or mail archive you selected is present and readable.
- Check that the destination has enough remaining capacity for the files you plan to keep there.
- Keep at least one separate copy until the Google account is safely below its replacement quota.
Do not delete Google data merely because an archive finished generating. The archive may still be sitting on a server, a download may have failed, or a destination may not contain every product you intended to export.
Use the Photos transfer option when another service is the destination
Google Photos also provides a transfer flow that copies photos and videos to another service. A transfer can be more convenient than downloading a very large archive, but it does not itself remove the Google originals. Confirm that the destination can accept the transfer and that you can open representative items there before changing the Google One quota.
If your objective is to stop using Google storage entirely, decide separately whether to retain the originals, delete them after verification, or keep both copies. The transfer and the membership change are separate actions.

How to downgrade Google AI Plus
Use a downgrade when the account needs more than the free quota but less than 400 GB. Google keeps the current membership active through the remainder of the billing period, then applies the lower plan at the next billing-cycle start.
- Open Google One and select Manage membership.
- Choose Change membership plan.
- Under Downgrade options, select the lower plan you want.
- Review the displayed storage capacity, price and plan details.
- Confirm the change.
- Check the effective date shown in the confirmation and keep the confirmation email.
There may be no downgrade choice if the account is already on the lowest plan available to it. In that case, the remaining choices are to keep that plan, cancel it, or reduce usage and leave paid storage.
What to check before confirming a downgrade
- Compare current usage with the new plan’s quota, not with the 400 GB you have today.
- Make sure the export or transfer is complete if your usage will not fit.
- Confirm that the displayed effective date is the one you expect.
- Note which AI Plus benefits will stop when the current membership ends or the lower plan begins.
How to cancel Google AI Plus
Cancellation ends the recurring membership after the current billing period. The additional storage and AI Plus benefits remain available until that period ends, subject to the date Google displays during cancellation.
- Open Google One’s membership controls and select Manage membership.
- Choose Cancel membership.
- Review the end date and the benefits that will stop.
- Confirm Cancel membership.
- Retain the confirmation email or screen showing the cancellation date.
Cancellation is not the same as immediate file deletion. It removes the expanded quota at the end of the billing cycle. If your account then exceeds its replacement quota, the account enters the restrictions described below.
What happens to Gmail, Drive and Photos after the quota drops?
Google’s policy describes service restrictions when storage use is above the available quota. These effects apply after the plan change takes effect, not simply when you open the cancellation screen.

| Service or feature | Effect while the account is over quota |
|---|---|
| Gmail | You cannot send or receive messages. Messages sent to the account are returned to the sender. |
| Google Drive | Drive cannot sync or upload new files. |
| New Google files | You cannot create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Vids files. |
| Existing files | Google says that until storage use is reduced, no one can edit or copy your files. |
| Google Photos | Photos cannot back up new photos or videos. |
These are quota restrictions, not an instruction to erase everything immediately. The practical danger is losing normal mail, synchronization, creation and backup functions while the account remains over its limit.
The long-term over-quota risk
Google says that if an account remains over quota for two years or longer, all content may be deleted. That is a potential deletion policy, not a promise that files disappear as soon as a plan ends. Nevertheless, leaving the account over quota for an extended period creates an avoidable risk. If a downgrade leaves you over the limit, reduce usage or restore paid storage promptly rather than treating the restricted account as a permanent archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to get under the new limit
Use the storage breakdown to decide which data to move or remove. Start with material you have already verified elsewhere, because deleting unverified data can turn a quota problem into a recovery problem.
- Identify the amount that must be removed or moved to reach the replacement quota.
- Move verified archives, large Drive files, photos or videos to a destination with sufficient capacity.
- Delete only the Google copies you no longer need to retain there.
- Recheck the account’s storage use and continue until it is below the new quota.
- Test Gmail sending, Drive uploads and Photos backup after the usage falls below the limit.
If you cannot reduce usage safely, buying storage again is the direct way to restore capacity. A re-purchase does not replace the need for a backup if the data is important.

Billing through a carrier or another provider
The steps above apply when Google handles the membership directly. If the subscription is billed through a mobile carrier or another third-party provider, Google says the change must be managed through that provider. The Google One screen may not show the same cancellation or downgrade controls, and changing a Google payment setting will not necessarily stop third-party billing.

Common timing mistakes to avoid
Assuming a downgrade is immediate
A downgrade normally remains pending until the next billing-cycle start. You still have the existing membership during the remainder of the current cycle, so use that time to finish exports and verify copies.
Deleting files before checking the archive
Takeout creates a copy; it does not prove that every downloaded file is readable. Open representative data first, then remove Google copies only when the backup is usable.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confusing an end date with the date you requested the change
The cancellation or downgrade screen should show when benefits and capacity change. Record that date rather than assuming it is the day you submitted the request.
Ignoring the destination’s capacity
A successful export can still leave you with nowhere to store the downloaded archive. Check free space on the computer, external drive or other destination before starting a large export.
A practical decision sequence
- Measure: note total usage and the Gmail, Drive and Photos breakdown.
- Set the target: choose the lower paid quota or the 15 GB no-charge quota.
- Protect the data: create a Takeout archive or use the Photos transfer flow for material that will not fit.
- Verify: open representative files and confirm the destination has enough capacity.
- Change the plan: use Google One’s membership controls, or the carrier’s controls if a third party bills you.
- Monitor: check storage after the effective date and resolve any over-quota warning before service restrictions disrupt mail, files or photo backup.
This sequence lets you lower the recurring cost without treating the membership change as a file-management shortcut. Your data remains available while you prepare, and the quota change occurs on the date shown by Google.
