Cancel the preorder through the store or retailer that accepted it—not by deleting the game, canceling your card, or disputing a pending authorization. Open that seller’s order page immediately, because the cutoff may be tied to billing, preloading, processing, or shipment rather than the advertised release date. The steps and rights below apply to U.S. purchases and differ between digital storefronts and physical retailers.
First identify the order and its current state
A console maker’s digital store, a publisher’s checkout, a physical retailer, and a third-party seller can apply different terms. Before taking action, record:

- The exact seller or storefront and the account used to place the order.
- The order or transaction number.
- Whether the purchase is a digital license, a physical disc or cartridge, or a PC code.
- The listed release date and whether the item has entered billing, preload, processing, or shipping.
- The payment method and whether your bank shows a pending authorization or a posted charge.
Do not assume that a console account controls an order placed at a publisher’s shop or a retailer. Sign in to the account that actually shows the order.
How to cancel a preorder safely
- Open the seller’s order area. Look for Order history, Transaction history, or a dedicated preorder page. Open the exact item, not a subscription or a different edition.
- Read the current status. “Preordered,” “payment pending,” “preloaded,” “processing,” and “shipped” can trigger different rules. Note any stated cancellation deadline.
- Use the on-page cancellation control. Confirm the cancellation and save the confirmation number, email, or screenshot. If no button appears, do not create a duplicate order or rely on deleting the software; contact the seller while the order number is available.
- Check digital activity. Automatic download, preload, or redemption of bonus content can remove eligibility even when the release date has not arrived. A deleted download does not necessarily restore eligibility.
- Verify the account and payment record. The order should show canceled or refunded. Keep checking the card or bank statement until a pending authorization disappears or a refund posts.
Digital storefront rules in the United States
PlayStation Store digital preorders
PlayStation’s stated refund terms distinguish when the preorder was placed. A preorder made more than 14 days before release may be eligible for a refund when requested before release, provided the main content has not been downloaded or preloaded. For a preorder made less than 14 days before release, the stated conditions include requesting within 14 days of purchase and not downloading or preloading the main content. After release, the applicable request window and content conditions still matter.

Start with transaction history and use PlayStation support if the self-service route does not offer the request. Canceling also disables any preorder bonus content that was accessible through that order. Local-law rights and content-specific terms can provide additional rules, so read the terms shown for your transaction.
Microsoft Store preorders
Microsoft directs customers to Order history in their Microsoft account for online cancellation. Payment information can be changed before billing. If the preorder has already been billed but has not been released, Microsoft says, “If you cancel a pre-order after it’s billed but before it’s released, we’ll process it as a refund.” A failed authorization may be retried before launch; if collection still fails, Microsoft says the preorder can be canceled.
Changing a card after billing does not turn a completed payment into a cancellation. Submit the cancellation first, then monitor the original payment method and any refund status.

Nintendo says it collects payment no sooner than seven days before release. Cancellation is available only before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, so the practical deadline can arrive before release day. In Nintendo Account settings, you can change the preferred payment method for future billing, but changing it does not automatically cancel an order that has already been processed.

Nintendo’s general digital-products policy treats payments as final and nonrefundable except where Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. Check the preorder’s status before the collection and preload event.
Steam and other digital sellers
Rules can vary by country, product type, and release status. A current U.S. Steam pre-purchase rule was not established here, so use the purchase’s own support and order pages rather than assuming that another platform’s 14-day, seven-day, or preload rule applies. Publisher-operated stores and PC-code sellers may also impose separate deadlines.
Physical preorder rules
PlayStation Direct
PlayStation Direct says the initial card preauthorization is temporary and may reduce available credit for approximately one to eight days, depending on the financial institution. It says the card is authorized for the order roughly six days before release and that cancellation is generally available until the item enters shipping, around six days before its currently scheduled release date. Shipping-address changes are available up to seven days before release.
When shipping has begun, the cancellation control may disappear. The cited PlayStation Direct terms say unopened preorder items may be returned within 30 days from shipment. Confirm the current order status and return instructions before opening the package.

Retailer orders
Retailer policies are item- and status-specific. Best Buy’s general U.S. cancellation help sends customers to the order details and notes that some digital downloads, including game downloads, cannot be canceled. If the self-service control is missing, contact the retailer with the order number instead of assuming the order is still cancellable.
Amazon Luna’s policy applies specifically to PC game preorders purchased through Amazon Luna: cancellation before release can receive a full refund when no part of the preorder has been redeemed or claimed. That policy should not be extended to marketplace sellers or unrelated Amazon products.
Amazon’s general U.S. returns information says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, but opened, activated, used, or incomplete software and video games may be nonreturnable or subject to a restocking fee equal to the item price. The listing and order page control for the particular item.

Changing the payment method without canceling
Payment changes are usually possible only before the seller submits the charge. Open the order, choose the payment or billing option, select an already verified method or add one, and save. Return to the order and confirm that the new method is displayed; an address-book update alone may not change the method attached to a preorder.

- If the order is still awaiting payment, make the change immediately and retain the confirmation.
- If the seller has already billed or authorized the original method, changing the account default may affect future purchases but not that transaction.
- If an authorization fails, update the method before the seller’s retry or launch process. Microsoft says it may retry a failed authorization and cancel if collection continues to fail.
- Never treat a replacement card number, closed account, or canceled bank card as a reliable cancellation method. The seller may still seek payment through its billing process or mark the order failed.
Understanding a pending charge
Pending authorization versus posted payment
A pending authorization temporarily reserves credit or funds; it is not necessarily a completed sale. PlayStation Direct describes an initial authorization that can remain for approximately one to eight days, depending on the bank. A posted charge means the payment was captured and requires a cancellation refund or return rather than simply waiting for an authorization to fall away.
What to do after canceling
- Confirm that the seller shows the order as canceled or refunded.
- Compare the amount and date on the bank statement with the order record.
- Allow the financial institution’s normal release period for a pending authorization, using the merchant’s stated period when one exists.
- Contact the seller if the order is canceled but the charge is posted or the pending hold remains beyond the stated period.
- Contact the card issuer only after checking with the seller, or when the merchant cannot explain a charge that remains after the seller’s own resolution period.
Do not dispute a legitimate pending authorization simply because it appears immediately after placing a preorder. A premature dispute can complicate the seller’s cancellation or refund process.
When the cancel button is missing
The digital game has preloaded
Stop further downloads and open the seller’s refund or support workflow. Do not assume that uninstalling the files reverses the preload condition. PlayStation and Nintendo expressly tie eligibility to download or preload status, while other stores may use different tests.
The physical order is processing or shipped
Once warehouse processing or shipping starts, cancellation may no longer be available. Read the return terms before opening, activating, or redeeming the item. Keep the packaging and any included code intact when the seller conditions a return on an unopened or unused product.
The seller charged the wrong card
Capture the order, charge, and payment-method details, then ask the seller to cancel or refund. Updating the account’s default card does not move an already captured transaction.
The order is not visible
Check every account email, console profile, guest checkout receipt, and publisher or retailer confirmation. A bank descriptor can identify the seller when the order email is missing. Do not place a second order until the first one is located or the seller confirms it failed.
You received a second authorization
Compare amounts and timestamps. One may be a temporary retry or authorization and the other a captured charge. Ask the seller which transaction is valid and request release of any duplicate hold; involve the card issuer if an unexplained duplicate remains posted.

- Set a calendar reminder before the platform’s likely billing or preload window, not only on release day.
- Turn off automatic downloads when you are still deciding, where the storefront provides that setting.
- Keep the confirmation email and order number until the refund or authorization release is visible.
- Check whether bonus items have been redeemed before canceling; cancellation can disable access to them.
- For physical purchases, review the seller’s return deadline and opening or activation exclusions before delivery.
- Use a payment method with enough available funds for an authorization, but do not rely on low funds to cancel an order.
Bottom line
Find the exact seller, check whether billing, preload, processing, or shipping has started, and use that seller’s order-history cancellation control immediately. Change payment details before billing, preserve every confirmation, and treat a pending bank entry differently from a posted charge. If the self-service option disappears, the seller’s support and return terms—not deleting the game or canceling a card—determine what happens next.
