Port your number to the new carrier before you cancel AT&T Mexico. Request AT&T’s four-digit NIP, give it to the carrier you are joining, wait until the number works there, and only then close the AT&T line. Cancelling first can leave you with just 40 calendar days to start portability, and the transfer does not erase unpaid bills, device financing or other contract obligations.
The safe order: portability first, cancellation second
Mobile-number portability is designed to move your existing Mexican phone number from AT&T to another carrier. The receiving carrier submits the portability request; you do not need to terminate AT&T service before that request is made.

- Choose and activate a replacement service with the carrier you want to use.
- Obtain your AT&T NIP, the four-digit code that confirms your intention to transfer the line.
- Give the NIP and your identification to the receiving carrier so it can file the request.
- Wait for the number to begin working on the new carrier.
- Cancel the AT&T account afterward and request written confirmation.
- Pay any remaining balance and review financing, term and promotional conditions.
AT&T’s portability FAQ says cancellation is not necessary before requesting a port. If the line has already been cancelled, the same FAQ says you have only 40 calendar days to begin portability and preserve the number. That shorter recovery window is the main reason to avoid cancelling first.

Prepare the information and decisions below before contacting the new carrier. Doing so reduces the chance that an incomplete request delays the transfer.

- The AT&T line you want to keep and the account details associated with it.
- A current, valid official identification document. AT&T lists identification as a requirement for an individual portability request.
- A newly issued NIP. It has four digits and remains valid for five days.
- The replacement carrier’s plan, SIM or eSIM arrangement, and an understanding of when its service will start charging.
- A record of any AT&T device installments, minimum-term commitment, discount or other promotion attached to the line.
- Access to your AT&T invoices so you can identify the final amount due after the transfer.
Do not discard the AT&T SIM or erase account records until the new service is working. Keep screenshots, emails, receipts and the eventual cancellation folio in one place.
Choose the receiving carrier carefully
Portability moves the number, not the quality or terms of the service around it. Compare the replacement carrier using the locations and usage patterns that matter to you rather than choosing solely by an advertised monthly price.

The NIP (Número de Identificación Personal) is the portability authorization code described by AT&T. It is four digits and valid for five days. Request a new code close enough to your submission that it will still be valid when the receiving carrier enters the application.
Use the current AT&T customer-support instructions for requesting the NIP and follow the identity checks shown there. Do not guess the code, reuse an expired code or assume that a code generated for one line applies to another line. If the code expires before the new carrier submits the request, obtain a new NIP and give the replacement code to the carrier.

Write down the date and time you received the NIP, the line it belongs to and the person or channel that accepted it. That record helps the receiving carrier troubleshoot an invalid-code message without confusing the line with another account.
Step 2: Prepare identification and any special forms
For an individual customer, AT&T lists the NIP and valid official identification for a portability request. Present the same identity information consistently to the receiving carrier; mismatched details can cause the application to be rejected or require correction.

A signed portability form is additionally required in two situations identified by AT&T:
- Recovering a number that has already been cancelled.
- Porting a non-geographic number, such as an 800 or 900 line.
If your ordinary mobile line is still active, do not cancel it merely to obtain this form. The active-line process is simpler when the receiving carrier submits the request before AT&T closes the account.
Step 3: Submit the request through the new carrier
Give the receiving carrier the NIP, your valid official identification and the line information it requests. The new carrier enters the portability application; AT&T is not the party that files the request on your behalf.

Ask the representative to confirm four details before you leave or end the session:
- That the correct phone number was entered.
- That the NIP was accepted and is still within its five-day validity period.
- Whether the request is complete or needs another document.
- The expected effective date and how the carrier will notify you of a change.
AT&T states that a complete request can be processed within 24 hours when it is entered Monday through Saturday during the 11:00–17:00 operating window. An optional effective date may be selected up to five business days after entry. Portability occurs overnight, so a short interruption can happen while the number changes networks.
Keep both phones or SIM-management tools available during the changeover if possible. Do not treat a temporary loss of signal as proof that the transfer failed until the receiving carrier’s stated window has passed and you have tested the new service.
Step 4: Test the number before cancelling AT&T
Wait until the transferred number is demonstrably working on the replacement service. A successful test should cover more than one incoming call.
- Place an outgoing call and confirm that the recipient sees your usual number.
- Call the number from another phone and confirm that the call reaches the new handset or eSIM.
- Send and receive a text message.
- Test mobile data if your plan includes it.
- Check any number-dependent sign-ins or verification services you rely on, without deleting old account records prematurely.
If calls still route to AT&T, the SIM or eSIM is not active, or the receiving carrier cannot confirm completion, contact that carrier first. Cancelling AT&T while routing is uncertain can turn a correctable activation issue into a number-recovery case.

Step 5: Cancel the AT&T account after the port works
Once the number is operating on the new carrier, contact AT&T to close the service. AT&T’s assistance center lists cancellation as a supported topic, and AT&T says its app manages AT&T services. Depending on your plan and current availability, support may also be offered by phone, chat or an AT&T store.
Tell the representative that the number has already been ported and that you want the associated AT&T service cancelled. Ask for a cancellation folio or other written confirmation showing:
- The line or account that was closed.
- The effective cancellation date.
- Any final amount due or later invoice expected.
- The reference or folio number for the request.
Save the confirmation with your portability records. If you have multiple lines, identify each line explicitly; porting one number does not automatically tell you whether other services on the account remain active.

Portability changes the network serving the number. It does not release you from obligations under the AT&T agreement. AT&T expressly states that portability does not free customers from obligations arising from the contract with the company they are leaving.

- Discounts, credits or promotions tied to keeping the line active.
- Equipment or payment arrangements that the account documents say remain due.
AT&T warns that ending service early can automatically remove a promotional benefit. A discount that appeared on earlier invoices may therefore be reversed or reduced on the final bill. Pay the amount shown by AT&T or dispute an incorrect charge through its current support process, keeping the folio and invoice numbers for reference.
If you already cancelled AT&T
Act quickly. AT&T’s portability FAQ gives you 40 calendar days from the cancellation to begin the portability process and preserve the number. Contact the carrier you want to join, explain that the AT&T line has already been cancelled, and ask it to start the recovery portability procedure within that window.
Because the line is no longer active, expect the receiving carrier to request the signed portability form AT&T identifies for recovery of a cancelled number, along with the NIP and valid official identification. Keep proof of the cancellation date, the old AT&T account information and the number itself. If the 40-day period has passed, ask both carriers what options remain; preservation is no longer assured under the stated window.
Common problems and the appropriate response

A practical timeline
Before requesting the NIP: select the replacement plan, verify coverage and confirm SIM or eSIM compatibility. Gather identification and locate your AT&T invoices.
When ready to submit: request the four-digit NIP, note when the five-day validity period ends, and provide the code and identification to the receiving carrier.
During processing: confirm whether the complete application was entered Monday through Saturday between 11:00 and 17:00, whether a future effective date was selected, and when the overnight change is expected.
After the number works: test calls, texts and data, then contact AT&T through an available support channel to cancel and obtain the folio.
After cancellation: watch for the final invoice, check promotional credits and financing, and retain proof of payment and closure.
