Cancellation stops a future renewal under the applicable terms. It does not automatically refund a payment that has already posted. Refund requests must go to the platform or provider that processed the charge, and eligibility depends on that service’s rules.

Start by identifying who bills the subscription
The correct cancellation route is determined by the billing account, not by the VPN app on your phone or computer. A subscription can be managed by the VPN company itself, Apple, or Google Play. Find the original purchase receipt and inspect a recent card or bank statement before changing anything.

If the subscription is not listed, check whether the purchase used a different Apple Account or Google Account. Also search old email receipts: the sender and transaction description usually identify the billing channel even when several accounts are signed in on the device.

Cancel a VPN subscription billed through Google Play
Google Play subscriptions renew at the beginning of each billing cycle unless you unsubscribe. Uninstalling the VPN app does not unsubscribe you.
- Sign in to the Google Account that owns the VPN subscription.
- Open Subscriptions in Google Play.
- Select the VPN subscription and choose Manage.
- Choose Cancel subscription.
- Complete every confirmation prompt until Google Play reports that the subscription is canceled.
Take a screenshot of the final status and keep the confirmation email. Record the cancellation date and the next renewal date that had been shown. Reopen the subscription list later to make sure the status remains canceled or the renewal setting is off.
If the Google Play subscription is a payment plan
Stopping auto-renewal does not necessarily erase outstanding payments for a payment plan already in progress. Google Play’s payment-plan terms can leave you responsible for the remaining installments while preventing a new plan from starting. Read the plan status and payment details shown after cancellation so you know whether you have ended only the next renewal or also satisfied all current obligations.

Use the Apple Account that appears on the purchase receipt. Open that account’s subscription-management area, select the VPN, and turn off renewal or cancel the subscription through Apple’s confirmation flow. Do not rely on a cancellation control inside the VPN app when Apple processed the payment; the app cannot override Apple’s billing record.
Save Apple’s confirmation screen or email, note the date, and verify that the VPN no longer shows an upcoming renewal in the Apple subscription list. If you cannot find it, sign out and check other Apple Accounts that may have been used for the original purchase.
Cancel a subscription bought directly from the VPN provider
Sign in to the provider’s website or account portal using the email associated with the receipt. Look for menus labeled Subscription, Billing, Plan, Renewal, or Cancel. Providers may place the control under account settings rather than in the VPN app.

- Open the account’s billing or subscription page.
- Choose the option to turn off automatic renewal or cancel the plan.
- Read the stated end date, access conditions, and any notice about remaining payments.
- Confirm the cancellation and complete any email, password, or survey step required to finish it.
- Keep the confirmation email, screenshot, and support ticket number if you contacted the provider.
ExpressVPN’s published support instructions illustrate why the billing source matters: a plan bought from its own account is handled there or through its support team, while purchases made through Apple or Google must be canceled in the respective store. That is an example of one provider’s process, not a universal rule for every VPN.
Finish the confirmation and prove the renewal is off
A cancellation is incomplete if you stop at the first screen or close a support chat before receiving a result. Use this verification sequence:
- Confirm that the account says Canceled, Expires on, or Renewal off, rather than Active or Renews on.
- Save the confirmation page as a screenshot or PDF and retain the email in a folder you can find later.
- Write down the date and time, the account email, the billing channel, and any support case number.
- Check the renewal date shown on the receipt or account. Cancellation must be completed before that date to prevent the next charge under the applicable terms.
- Review the subscription page again after a short interval or on the next account sign-in to ensure the status did not revert because a confirmation step was missed.
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to retain cancellation requests and notes about conversations with a company. Those records are useful if a charge appears after you canceled.
What cancellation changes—and what it does not

Deleting the app only removes local software. It does not change a subscription record held by Google Play, Apple, or the provider, so an account can continue renewing after the app is gone.
Request a refund as a separate step
Cancellation prevents a future renewal according to the applicable terms; it does not reverse a payment that has already completed. Submit a refund request to whoever charged you:

- Google Play: use Google Play’s refund process for the transaction. The decision follows Google’s refund policy and the facts of the purchase.
- Apple: use Apple’s refund-request process for Apple purchases that may qualify. Canceling the subscription does not itself submit that request.
- Direct provider: contact the provider’s billing or support team and include the transaction date, receipt number, and account email. The provider’s plan terms control eligibility.
Keep the refund request confirmation separately from the cancellation proof. A denied refund does not mean the cancellation failed, and a granted refund does not necessarily prove that future renewal is disabled; verify both outcomes independently.

If you cannot find the subscription
The store shows no VPN subscription
Search your email for the original receipt and compare its account identifier with the account currently signed in. Check other Apple Accounts or Google Accounts used on the device. If the receipt names a provider rather than a store, sign in to that provider’s website instead.
The VPN app has no cancellation button
That is common when a store handled billing. Use the store’s subscription list. If the provider billed you directly and the account has no control, contact its support team and ask for written confirmation that auto-renewal has been disabled.
You no longer have access to the email account
Do not create a second subscription while trying to solve the first. Use the billing descriptor, transaction date, and payment details to identify the account with the provider or store’s support team. Ask them to locate the subscription and provide a cancellation record.

You see several VPN entries
Match each entry to its receipt, account email, and merchant descriptor. A device can contain an app obtained through one channel while a separate subscription is billed through another account. Cancel every active plan you recognize, and retain a separate confirmation for each one rather than assuming that canceling one plan affects the others.
You are offered a pause or a cheaper plan
A pause, downgrade, or promotional offer is not the same as turning off automatic renewal. Read the resulting status carefully. If your goal is to prevent any future charge, make sure the final record says canceled or renewal off and gives an end date. Accepting an alternative plan can leave a new recurring commitment in place.
If a charge appears after you canceled
- Compare the charge date with the cancellation date and the renewal date in your confirmation. A charge processed before cancellation may be a completed renewal rather than a post-cancellation error.
- Check whether the charge came from a second account, a different billing channel, or another VPN plan. Match the merchant descriptor and receipt number.
- Contact the merchant or store that processed the payment. Provide the confirmation, screenshots, emails, and support case number.
- Keep a written record of the contact, including dates, names or ticket numbers, and the response.
- If the company continues charging after a valid cancellation, ask your card issuer about disputing the charge. The FTC also directs consumers to report problems to ReportFraud.ftc.gov or their state attorney general.
A card dispute addresses an improper or continued charge; it does not replace the need to cancel the underlying subscription. Keep the account confirmation even after the issuer opens a dispute.

Timing, notice periods, and regional differences
Renewal deadlines, refund windows, access after cancellation, payment-plan obligations, and consumer rights vary by provider, plan, billing route, and jurisdiction. Use the renewal date and terms displayed for your own account rather than assuming that every VPN follows Google Play’s policy. A direct annual plan may have different notice language from a monthly store subscription, and a promotional period may convert to paid service under its own terms.
If you are close to the renewal date, cancel first and request a refund second. Waiting for a refund decision can leave the subscription active long enough to renew. The confirmation should state whether access continues until a specific date and whether any payment remains due.

Before selecting the final cancellation button, confirm the account email, merchant name, plan type, renewal date, and whether the displayed action says “cancel” or merely “change plan.” Read any notice about outstanding installments. If a support agent handles the request, ask for the effective cancellation date in writing. These checks prevent a common mistake: canceling a trial or one account while an annual plan on another account remains active.
