The correct settings depend on the monitor model and the target workflow; HDR capability alone does not identify a universal calibration preset.
Before you calibrate: identify the display and the goal
Write down the monitor model, connection type, firmware version, intended HDR content, and what you use the display for. General desktop use, HDR video production, and other color-managed work may call for different targets. For color-critical work, establish the target color space, white point, luminance, transfer function, viewing conditions, and content type before changing settings.

Without the monitor model, its current manual, and your workflow, there is no reliable way to specify its on-screen menu labels, HDR mode, brightness limits, or compatible calibration instrument.

Choose the calibration path that fits your monitor

Set up the monitor first
- Open the monitor’s current manual and check the manufacturer’s instructions for HDR mode, color modes, calibration features, and hardware-calibration workflow.
- Set the monitor to the intended mode and target for your use case. Do not assume a setting intended for HDR video production is appropriate for general desktop work.
- If you are using vendor calibration software or a measurement instrument, confirm that both support your exact monitor and intended workflow before proceeding.
Monitor hardware calibration and a macOS color profile are distinct parts of the process. A profile created in macOS does not establish that the monitor’s own calibration features have been configured, and the manufacturer’s workflow may have its own supported targets and requirements.

Create or select a color profile in macOS
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Select the external display.
- Choose its existing color profile, or select Color profile > Customize to open Display Calibrator Assistant, where available.
- Follow the assistant to create a profile. macOS assigns the resulting calibrated profile to that display.
Apple notes that some displays have additional built-in color-accuracy and calibration features, so consult the display documentation as well as the macOS controls. Use a reference mode only if it is supported and matches your work
A reference mode is a defined set of display targets—such as color space, white point, gamma, and brightness—for a particular media workflow. It is not simply a general-purpose HDR switch. Available presets and custom controls vary by device, so use a mode only when it is offered for your display and is appropriate to your production target. Apple Support: Reference modes

Apple describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) as intended for 4K or ultra-high-definition video production workflows up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained, using P3 primaries and the SMPTE ST 2084 EOTF, on supported displays. That specification belongs to Apple’s preset; it is not a brightness claim for an unspecified third-party monitor. Apple Support: Pro Display XDR reference modes
Apple’s Pro Display Calibrator guide describes custom reference-mode options such as color gamut, white point, luminance, and transfer function, including PQ for HDR on supported Pro Display XDR and Studio Display XDR configurations. Full Calibration
Full Calibration recalibrates white point, primaries, luminance, and gamma response using a compatible spectroradiometer or colorimeter. Apple calls for current macOS and display firmware before running it, and recommends a Thunderbolt connection when using Pro Display Calibrator. Fine-Tune Calibration

Visual Fine-Tune
Visual Fine-Tune adjusts white point by visual comparison. It is a separate option from instrument-based Full Calibration and should not be treated as a substitute for measurement when a workflow requires measured targets. Apple Pro Display Calibrator User Guide
Verify the result in the conditions you will use
Evaluate the display with the target content and viewing conditions for which you configured it. Apple says reference modes are intended for controlled viewing conditions typical of professional production; the wrong mode or unsuitable viewing conditions can produce unsatisfactory results. For an Apple Pro Display XDR HDR color-correction setup, Apple describes using it as the external HDR reference monitor in a two-display arrangement, with a separate display for the Final Cut Pro interface. Apple’s article lists Final Cut Pro 10.4.7 or later and macOS 10.15 or later for that setup; check current app and operating-system compatibility before relying on those stated requirements.
